Based in West Bromwich, A. Wilkes and Son was a photographer’s company who issued a series of photo postcards of players and teams, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Having played in the days when professional football was in its infancy in the late 1800s, Albert Wilkes represented West Bromwich Albion, Walsall and Aston Villa.  It was at Villa he had his greatest success, being in the team that won the First Division titles in 1898-1899 and 1889-1900.  Wilkes later played for Fulham and Chesterfield and won five England caps between 1901 and 1902.

He had taken up photography during his playing career and carried it on until he died in 1936, when his son took over the business, which was sold to photographic agency Coloursport in 1970.

Here are some of the postcards from the series we found online.
