Spurs v Leeds United notes

.
05.09.1908 Tottenham’s first away match in the Football League.
.
25.08.1971 Tottenham’s away game against Leeds United was played at Boothferry Park, the home of Hull City FC, as Leeds were banned from playing games at Elland Road. The FA Disciplinary Committee ruled that the pitch invasion at a home match against West Bromwich Albion meant that their ground would be closed for a month, meaning playing four home fixtures on other club’s grounds.
.
24.02.2001 Alan Sugar’s last game as Spurs chairman.
.

They are linked with both

.
Ben Alnwick Starting off with Sunderland, the keeper had played only just over 20 games before he dropped out of contention for a first team place and Spurs swapped Marton Fulop and £400,000 for Alnwick in 2007.  Spent a lot of time out on loan – one of which was at Leeds for 28 days when he failed to get a game – and made only three appearances in a five years stay at Tottenham before he joined Barnsley in 2012, going on to feature for Charlton, Orient, Peterborough and Bolton.
.
Nick Barmby Hull born forward who joined Tottenham from the FA School of Excellence and made 100 appearances scoring 27 goals in the “Famous Five” frontline of Sheringham, Klinsmann, Dumitrescu, Anderton and Barmby.  Wanting a return nearer his birthplace, he broke Middlesbrough’s transfer record to move to the Riverside for £5.75 million in June 1995.  Three years later he moved to Everton, then Liverpool in 2000, before Leeds signed him for £2.75 million in 2002, spending time on loan at Nottingham Forest in 2004.  A free transfer in 2004 saw Barmby eventually find his way home to play for Hull City, where he played until 2012, combining coaching duties in the final two years of his time at the Tigers.  Became caretaker and then permanent manager at Hull for six months until May 2012.  Coached at Scunthorpe United for a couple of months at the end of the 2019-2019 season.
.
Oliver Boast Highly rated 16 year old striker who was brought through the Leeds United Academy and was signed by Spurs for a reported fee of over £1 million in the summer of 2025.
.
Michael Brown Coming through the youth system at Manchester City, Michael Brown went out on loan before moving to Sheffield United in 1999 after just over 100 appearances for City.  A tough tackling midfielder, Brown stayed at Bramall Lane for five years before he was brough in at Tottenham in January 2004 for £500,000 by David Pleat.  Ousted by Martin Jol’s signings in his position, Brown left for Fulham in January 2006, having played 64 games and scored three goals for Spurs.  A two season spell at Craven Cottage was followed by three at Wigan Athletic and two at Portsmouth before a move to Elland Road in July 2011.  78 appearances and three goals later, a final move to Port Vale in 2014 combined a coaching role. Became manager at Vale Park in May 2017 but was sacked in September of that year and went into football punditry on radio and TV.
.
Bob Browne Bob Browne played for Leeds United in the late 1930s and guested for Spurs during WWII in 1942-43.
.
Herbert Chapman
.
Jamie Clapham
.
Jack Clarke After 28 appearances and two goals for Leeds United, Jack Clarke was a talented young winger who Spurs took to N17 for a rumoured fee of £10 million.  It didn’t work out for Clarke at Tottenham, with changes in managers and unsuccessful loan spells, including one immediately back to Elland Road, where he was not used by Marcelo Bielsa, so was recalled and sent out to QPR.  Further spells away from Spurs followed at Stoke City where he picked up an Achilles injury before hew as loaned out to Sunderland, who turned the move into a permanent deal for £10 million in 2022 and he left there two years later to join Ipswich Town.
.
Archie Cubberley A 17 year old Archie Cubberley played for Tottenham in the club’s first ever FA Cup match and later was at Leeds City from 1906 to 1912.
.
Chris Fairclough
.
James Freeborough Jim Freeborough was released by Spurs in 1906 and played for Leeds.
.
John George A halfback signed from Kettering by Tottenham in April 1904, Johnny George had to wait seven months for his Spurs debut in a Western League match, but couldn’t make the first team, so left for Leeds City in 1906 having made just four appearances and scoring once.  He was a regular in his first season until he was replaced by former Tottenham team-mate James Freeborough.  Seeking more playing time, Johnny moved to Croydon Common for a single season and then into non-league with Hastings and St. Leonards.
Moved to Northamptonshire when he retired from the game and served in the Army as a Drill Sergeant at Woolwich Arsenal (the military depot) and during WW2 was in Irchester Home Guard. Worked in the Parsons Pork Pie Factory for many years and died in 1966.

.  The two goals Kane scored took him to 11 in matches on the final day of the season, a new Premier League record.  It also matched his best total in a season in the Premier League with 30 goals.  He is the second player to find the net 30 or more times in a season in the PL, although Alan Shearer’s two seasons were made up of 42 matches.  Harry’s two goals at Elland Road made it 16 away from the THS this season, equalling the Premier League record for away goals in a single season.
