| 05.08.2000 | Danny Maddix Testimonial Away Won 2-0
Danny Maddix was awarded a testimonial between the two sides he played for the most. So Spurs travelled to Loftus Road to meet QPR. Not only was it a chance for Maddix to see his old team in action, but Gerry Francis was pitting his management skills against his old club, as was striker Peter Crouch, who had joined Rangers in the close season. Les Ferdinand made a nostalgic return to Loftus Road for Spurs. Sherwood set up a chance for Ferdinand in the 23rd minute, which he powered a shot past Harper in the home goal and then there were openings for Anderton, Iversen, Stephen Clemence and Ramon Vega to add to the score. However, Spurs had to wait until the 61st minute and then a deflection took Tim Sherwood’s shot past the QPR keeper to make it 0-2 and that was how it ended. Teams : |

| 28.07.1999 | Friendly Away Drew 2-2
A pre-season London derby friendly provided ample opportunity to tune up for the campaign ahead, with Tottenham a little behind in their preparations compared to Championship side QPR. It was the home side who provided the first threat to a goal when former Gooner Kiwomya headed down for Rob Steiner to shoot too high. The Spurs response was to win a corner from which Anderton crossed into a busy penalty area where the ball dropped for Steffen Iversen to poke the ball home from close range in the sixth minute. Spurs looked to press home their early advantage, with Justin Edinburgh running across the 18 yard line from left to right and putting a right-footed shot just wide and then David Ginola crossed for Sol Campbell to get his effort on target, but it was close to the keeper, who made a regulation save. Rangers looked to hit Spurs on the break and Kiwomya almost did so, lifting the ball over Ian Walker, but the ball dropped wide of the goal, although shortly after the QPR forward was deemed to have been tripped by Stephen Carr, when there appeared little contact and Gavin Peacock scored from the spot. Within three minutes, Spurs were somehow behind as Steiner ran through the Spurs defence, who appealed for offside, in vain it transpired, as the striker ran through to beat Walker. When Steiner ran through and scored again, this time there was a flag identifying him as being beyond the last Spurs defender. Tottenham started to calm the game down and chances started to be created. Anderton crossed for Sherwood to guide his shot wide, before Iversen did the same with his head to a Ginola cross. Willem Korsten and Mark Gower were introduced at the break and added a bit more steel in midfield, as Tottenham started to get a grip on the match. Luke Young hit a shot into the keeper’s hands, Korsten forced Miklosko into a save and then Iversen netted his second of the match to level things up. Korsten made good ground on the wing, playing the ball on to Gower to take it around the keeper and square for Steffen to tap it in from close range. It inspired Iversen to try his luck soon after and his fierce shot brought a good save from the keeper and then in the final couple of minutes he was through on goal, with only Miklosko to beat, only to have the ball nipped off his toes. A 38th minute clash between Kevin Scott and Les Ferdinand, which ended with both players being red-carded in an incident which was nothing more than a case of handbags, was the main talking point of this clash between the two London clubs at the Lane. Right on half time, a header from Andy Impey gave Rangers a 1-0 lead and although Spurs dominated the second half, they had trouble beating QPR keeper Tony Roberts. He plunged to the ground to divert Jurgen Klinsmann’s 53rd header away from goal and then managed to get a touch on Nick Barmby’s header a quarter of an hour later to take it past the post. However, with eleven minutes left, Klinsmann knocked the ball down in the box and Barmby was first to it to lift it over Roberts from six yards out to earn a 1-1 draw. Teams : – |

Spurs eased to a comfortable 3-0 lead but QPR put in a late rally to give Tottenham a worrying last couple of minutes. Spurs could have taken a very early lead, when Darren Anderton’s corner ended with Gary Mabbutt being brought down for a penalty, but Teddy Sheringham’s spot-kick was saved by Tony Roberts. Sheringham redeemed himself in the eighth minute, with a header from an Anderton free-kick, with a second goal for the Spurs striker coming in the 34th minute after good work from Paul Allen, Vinny Samways and Anderton on the left wing set him up for a near post header that went through Roberts. Just after the hour, Darren Anderton’s run saw him hold off the challenge of Clive Wilson and drive a 15 yard shot under the Rangers’ keeper to make it 3-0. But QPR came back with two goals in two minutes to shake Tottenham’s confidence. Darren Peacock headed in a free-kick from the right in the 87th minute, then Les Ferdinand produced a cross that was headed in by Devon White a minute later to give Spurs a shock that saw them hold out for the remaining couple of minutes. Although Spurs took the lead at Loftus Road, QPR came back to win this Premier League match 4-1. Nicky Barmby took the ball off David Bardsley and slipped it inside for Teddy Sheringham to slide the ball past Ludek Miklosko in the Rangers goal in the 28th minute. However, the second half was a totally different matter, with Ian Holloway lashing a Ray Wilkins cross down into the ground and over the diving Ian Walker to equalise with 52 minutes gone. The home side went ahead when Wilkins met Andy Sinton’s cross with a diving header seven minutes later, which was extended when Andy Impey’s right wing cross was played back into the path of Gary Penrice by Sinton and the striker slid home to make it 3-1 in the 67th minute. The turnaround was completed when Dennis Bailey passed the ball in for Penrice to smash home QPR’s fourth goal with 11 minutes left. Teams : |

Spurs were at home to QPR and the First Division match ended 1-1 on a sunny spring afternoon. John Pratt took a pass into him on the edge of the box, turned and hit his shot just over the bar before the same player brought a good save from the keeper when Villa’s long corner to the far post was nodded back and the midfielder’s 12 yard header was tipped over. A questionable onside decision saw Dave Clement played through by Micky Walsh and he rounded Daines and slotted home in 14 minutes and 15 seconds. Within a minute it was 1-1 when Hoddle played a 1-2 with Jones and dinked the ball over the QPR defence for Steve Perryman to control the ball with his stomach and take it past Richardson in the same movement to knock the ball in from five yards out. John Pratt’s cross was just missed by Hoddle, four yards out, but there had been an infringement. Then at the other end Walsh missed an open goal with a diving header but was spared that embarrassment as he was offside. Hoddle played in Villa and a nonchalant shot forced Richardson to tip the ball past the post. As Rangers pressed for a second, Don McAllister had to head away a chip into the goalmouth from Paul Goddard in an incident that saw Barry Daines sustain a groin injury, which required lengthy treatment from physio Mike Varney and an injection at half-time to see him through the match. Into the second half, Miller half headed out a cross and Gerry Francis slashed the ball over the bar, while play moved to the other end and Richardson had to make a good block as Villa turned Howe and shot on goal. The keeper did well to come out and intercept a through ball meant for Hoddle, but he then passed straight to Chris Jones on the left and his first time shot just faded away from goal after shooting from 30 yards out on the left. Francis burst through and put Goddard in, but his shot was well held by the injured Daines. A good move by Taylor and Hoddle put Pratt in on the right side of the box, but his shot was deflected just wide for a corner. Hoddle was also the architect for a right wing cross that Jones glanced wide, as the sun shone down on a beautiful April day. Teams : Goal times |

Tottenham’s opening game of the Easter programme gave them a boost in their attempt to retain their First Division status with a 3-0 home win over QPR. Although Rangers went close a few times in the early part of the game, it was Spurs who took the lead. Peter Taylor’s goal that opened the scoring came at the Park Lane end, with a low driven shot from the left beating keeper and defender in the six yard box. In the second half, Chris Jones’ double helped Tottenham to both points. His first came from eight yards out with a shot from the left of the goal following Ralph Coates’ cross and he made it 3-0 with an effort that went past Phil Parkes, who rushed out to meet him as he broke towards the QPR box and a covering defender could not get back to clear it before it went over the line. Steve Perryman was making his 300th league appearance for Spurs. Teams : Goal times : – |

QPR’s best season in the First Division was aided by a convincing second half performance that lead to a 3-0 win at White Hart Lane. The first half was nothing to write home about with neither side managing a shot in anger, but Rangers struck in the 55th minute with Bowles heading on a Parkes kick out and Don Givens finishing with aplomb. Just after the hour, Masson’s free-kick found Francis racing in to swing the ball home and the future Spurs manager ran half the length of the field to shoot home the third on 74 minutes. Parkes was called into action as Spurs tried to gain some succour, but his endeavours denied Tottenham and the intervention of the goalpost stopped Osgood gaining some consolation. Teams : |

Struggling Spurs visited Loftus Road where QPR were unbeaten and came away with a 0-0 draw having put in a good performance that limited the home team to a few chances and looked the more likely to find the net. Tottenham started well, with Chris Jones hitting the side netting from a tight angle on the left and then popping up on the right to cross to the far post, where a diving Ralph Coates headed wide. Don Givens tested Pat Jennings with a shot from outside the area that swerved, but the Spurs keeper pushed it wide of his right hand post. Coates led a breakaway and played a ball across to the right for Jimmy Neighbour to run at the defence, being stopped on the edge of the box, but leaving two QPR players on the floor as they collided with each other. Play continued and Chivers hit a fierce left foot shot from an angle inside the left of the area that Parkes did well to save, but the ball squirmed behind him and he just recovered in time before Jones tried to nudge it into the net from close range. John Pratt released Jones through the middle with a fine forward pass, but McLintock denied him an opportunity to get a shot away with a well-timed tackle. Chivers then again brought a save from Parkes, coming in from the left and then Chris Jones flashed a header wide following a free-kick. Rangers midfielder Givens had fizzed a shot against the Spurs bar at the end of the first half, but after the break Martin Chivers tested QPR keeper Phil Parkes twice before having to be substituted because of injury. A ball into the Rangers area bounced off McLintock for Jones to react first and see his shot blocked by Parkes. The young striker was unlucky to see a left foot shot fly a couple of feet over the angle after he had beaten two QPR defenders. Bowles had a retaliatory kick at Willie Young after he had been fouled, with the referee giving both a talking to, with Young receiving a booking just after for a tackle on Francis in the centre circle. Steve Perryman also fired a shot just too high over the Rangers goal, before Pat Jennings dived to his left to save a ball that had cannoned off Leach when Keith Osgood tried to clear the ball in the Spurs penalty area. From a QPR corner, a header by a Spurs defender went towards the Tottenham goal and it came off Francis’ back as he tried to duck under it and fortunately, Jennings was well placed to hold the ball. Givens finally went into the book for dissent in the final minute and having come off the bench, it was John Duncan who almost had the final say with a header that missed the goal by a foot after Ralph Coates had flighted in a free-kick. Spurs lost out by the odd goal in three to Queens Park Rangers at the Lane. Queens Park Rangers enjoyed a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane thanks to two first half goals from Stan Bowles. Five minutes into the game John Beck allowed the ball to run to Dave Clement, who made a strong run down the line. His deep cross was headed over Martin Peters and Terry Naylor by Dave Thomas to pick out Stan Bowles, who volleyed into the net. The second goal came from a penalty conceded by Mike England, who pulled back Don Givens, with Bowels converting from the spot. The second half was played more in the Rangers half, with Spurs pressing hard to get back into the match, but although Spurs got a goal in the second half with John Duncan scoring, the visitors almost extended their lead, with Givens and Bowles both breaking forward but missing good opportunities. | 02.03.1974 | Division 1 Away Lost 1-3
A Spurs unbeaten run of nine matches was brought to a halt when Rangers won this game at Loftus Road 3-1. Spurs were missing centre-half Mike England and the defence was exposed in a one-sided second-half. After only six minutes, Dave Thomas nearly scored after swapping passes with Stan Bowles, but the winger shot wide from close-range. Tottenham were pushing forward early on and England’s replacement Mike Dillon headed just over from John Pratt’s free kick. Steve Perryman got a talking to from the ref for a foul on Mike Leach, before he had a fierce shot that was blocked by Gerry Francis and shortly after, much against the run of play QPR went ahead in the 21st minute. Stan Bowles played a through ball to Don Givens, who was just inside the box and side-stepped a tackle before driving a drilled shot past Pat Jennings. Tottenham responded with a Pratt effort that blazed over the bar and Perryman then brought a diving save from Phil Parkes, but there was a stroke of luck ten minutes before half-time when Givens flicked the ball on for Thomas to run through and he was tripped by Jennings. Rangers players pleaded for a penalty, but a free-kick outside the area was the ref’s decision. Following a corner, Terry Mancini headed against the Tottenham crossbar but Spurs drew level three minutes before the break. Ray Evans was pulled back inside the Rangers box by Dave Thomas and the referee pointed to the spot. from where Martin Chivers drove the ball past Parkes to make it 1-1. However, Spurs failed to go into the dressing room level, as a minute later, Rangers went back into the lead as Gerry Francis’ ball into goalmouth allowed Stan Bowles to get the ball out of his feet and produced a fierce shot from 12 yards into the Tottenham net. Tony Hazell replaced Ron Abbott in the second-half with the Rangers side re-arranged as Dave Clement took up a midfield position and Gerry Francis was pushed up front. Rangers began to take control of the game and Givens should have scored when he only had Jennings to beat, but hurriedly shot over the bar in the 55th minute. Perryman was again spoken to for the second time for a kick on Bowles from behind and that sparked a little trouble in the crowd. After 78 minutes the limping Francis broke through, but he took the ball too wide of Jennings when he was one-on-one with the keeper. Alan Gilzean replaced Ralph Coates in the 79th minute, but three minutes later, QPR sealed their victory when Francis placed a fine header to Dave Thomas’s cross out of Jennings’ reach to make it 3-1. There was a frosty reception for recent £100,000 signing Roger Morgan as he returned to Loftus Road, but it was only the freezing conditions that conspired to produce the chill. Most players on both teams wore gloves with Greaves donning fingerless fawn mittens. Rangers were still near the bottom of the table and although both teams put on a good display of football in difficult conditions, the score was 0-0 at the break. The frosty pitch made errors likely and when Les Allen got past our defence, he put in a cross for Frank Clarke to head QPR into the lead soon after the second half started. It was late in the game that things swung Tottenham’s way, with Mullery’s free-kick being cleared and Morgan putting the ball back into the area for Jimmy Greaves to knock the ball past the keeper. The home side claimed Greaves had handled in the act of scoring, but the referee waved away their complaints. Rangers almost won the game at the death with a shot from Ian Morgan (twin of Roger) being kicked off the line by Cyril Knowles to preserve the draw. A coin had been thrown at a linesman from the QPR section of the crowd, which lead to an FA investigation. Teams : |

Baily was the architect for the second half Spurs goal from Bill Nicholson, which he placed into the corner of the net. It was warm on the opening Saturday of the Southern League season as Spurs entertained QPR at White Hart Lane. In the first half, Spurs began the match the better of the two sides, but in the latter part it was Rangers who looked dangerous, but the Tottenham defence held firm and George Clawley in goal had little work to do. Hamilton was in a good position, but totally missed the ball and Colvin was then well-placed but put his shot wide, then, just before half-time, Jones crashed a shot against the Rangers bar. At the start of the second half, debutant Bob Houston looked as though he had lost a shooting opportunity when he stumbled, but he regained his feet to fire in an effort heading for the top corner, until Collins stretched to keep it out with a fine save. Houston then was unlucky to see a header bounce away off the post and Spurs had a goal ruled out after a “scrimmage” that could have been for offside. Erentz was also denied by the keeper when through on goal, having his shot pushed aside in a match that was full of determination, but little quality in finishing. Teams : NOTE : – There were Spurs debuts for Alf Warner, John Jones and Bob Houston. |

Newcomers to the Southern League (Division 1), QPR travelled to North London for their second match (the first against Brighton United was to be expunged after the South Coast club resigned from the league). 3,000 Rangers fans swelled the crowd for the London derby and Spurs played the first half kicking into the sun. It was an end to end first half, with the Spurs attack linking well, but being denied by good defending by the QPR back line. When they got through, they found Clutterbuck in the Rangers goal in good form, saving a number of shots on goal, but Cameron, Copeland and Smith should have done better with chances they had to score. Rangers’ played a longer game and the Spurs full backs of Tait and Erentz were able to cope with this, especially having Clawley behind them to provide a pair of safe hands. With the half backs preventing QPR moves building up, it was Spurs who had the best of the first half, although the visitors were hampered by full back Knowles picking up a knee injury that he had to battle on with. Tottenham also found ex-Woolwich Arsenal defender McConnell playing well, with a good display of tackling. The only goal of the game was created by Kirwan down the left wing and his cross to Copeland, who drew the goalkeeper and then put the ball across to Smith, who scored. With less than 15 minutes left, Spurs saw out the game to great acclaim. Teams : Attendance : – 11,000 NOTE : – Tom Morris made his Tottenham debut. |

| 08.11.1890 | London Senior Challenge Cup Preliminary Round 2 replay Home Won 2-1
The QPR first team travelled to Tottenham in a London Senior Challenge Cup Preliminary Round 2 replay, following a 1-1 draw at Brondesbury the previous Saturday. In an evenly matched game Rangers had the better of the first-half, scoring once, despite only having ten men. Spurs were play more as individuals, while QPR acted as a unit, but Tottenham created several scoring opportunities but failed to make the most of them. Spurs kept the ball in the Rangers’ half, ending with Bassett’s long shot over the bar. Harston followed suit with a shot over the goal and while more shots went in on the Rangers’ goal, keeper Schneidan was playing well to keep them out. Rangers responded with a shot that Walford was called upon to save, with the play moving to the other end where Baxter’s two shots were too high. Harston then went closest with a shot that went inches wide of the goal before Jull fired an effort over the top, with Schneidan in action again to thwart Tottenham’s shots on goal. After thirty-five minutes, the ball was played from Morris to McDonald, who found the net with his shot. Coming back into the game, Tottenham produced some shots but they could not score, leaving the visitors a goal up at the break. Bobby Buckle was the Spurs man who got the side back on level terms, shooting in from a scrummage in front of the goal following a corner twelve minutes into the second half. The pace of the game then picked up and Spurs camped in the Rangers half. Harston scored the winning goal with a shot along the ground, giving Spurs a home tie against Barking in the next round. London Senior Challenge Cup Preliminary Round 2 Away Drew 1-1
In what was QPR’s first competitive match, they drew 1-1 with Tottenham at their Brondesbury Park ground in the Second Preliminary Round of the London Senior Cup. QPR started well and had a few chances in the autumn sunshine, with Teagle having the best of them, but lacking accuracy with his shooting. Druett’s cross was finished by McDonald to give the home side the lead, but playing with the wind behind them and the sun on their backs, Spurs picked up their game. QPR’s Sturges was frustrating Tottenham with his good defending, while his partner at the back Saunders raided forward forcing a shot to be punched out. Pressure on the Rangers goal eventually lead to an equaliser, when a melee in front of goal brought a low shot by Frank Cottrell that could not be kept out. It lead to a frantic finish with both teams seeking a winner, but a replay at Tottenham a week later was needed to find out who would progress. Teams : |
