1973 Defending the trophy, Spurs were drawn against Liverpool in the semi-final, a team they had faced in all the three domestic competitions already that season.  A fluky goal – a clearance that hit Alec Lindsay and rebounded into the net – gave the home side a slim lead going into the second leg.

1974 Spurs travelled to Leipzig and took the game to Locomotiv, securing a two goal lead through Peters and Coates, before the home side grabbed one back late on in the semi-final first leg.
