1901 | Tottenham Hotspur’s first appearance in the FA Cup final saw them travel to South London to be greeted by a crowd of 114,815 – a world record at the time. Not a bad crowd for a non-league club !! It was the first time Spurs had played Sheffield United and it was the opponents who took the lead, but on 13 minutes, Brown headed the equaliser. It was Spurs who took the lead five minutes into the second half, when Brown linked with Cameron and shot past William “Fatty” Foulke. Coming towards the end of the match, a shot by United’s Bennett was half saved by Spurs goalie Clawley, who scrambled back to push the ball away from the line. It hit Bennett as he followed up and went off for a goal-kick. Clawley appealed for the place kick, Bennett appealed for the corner and the referee awarded … a goal !! Straight after the game, the FA met to decide the venue for the replay and were intent on playing the replay at Goodison Park, but Liverpool had a home game that day and felt that the size of their gate would be affected. Therefore, Bolton’s Burnden Park was chosen to stage the match. See 1901 for more details of the match. |
