26.12.1979 Division 1     Away     Lost     0-1

The game was won early on when Alan Sunderland scored in the 15th minute, seizing on a loose ball when Milija Aleksic dropped Graham Rix’s cross.  Spurs almost pulled level within a couple of minutes, when John Pratt’s shot was saved by Pat Jennings on the edge of his penalty area.

The match was not the most exciting, with the sides cancelling each other out to reduce the number of goal-scoring chances made.

11.04.1977 Division 1     Away     Lost     0-1

Spurs lost out by the only goal of the game at Highbury, but Jimmy Rimmer was called upon to keep the Tottenham forwards out. His save from Chris Jones, who got on the end of a Peter Taylor cross, was an athletic effort.

The first half was a midfield battle, but Barry Daines had to be equally alert to make two fine saves in the second half and was called upon twice more near the end to prevent a bigger defeat.

Hooking the ball past the Spurs keeper, Malcolm Macdonald got the goal which won the game for Arsenal in the 71st minute.

27.12.1976 Division 1     Home     Drew     2-2

Willie Young and John Duncan were Spurs scorers in this 2-2 First Division draw at White Hart Lane.

Striking the ball first time past Pat Jennings, Malcolm Macdonald put Arsenal ahead early on, but Peter Taylor’s free-kick was perfectly flighted for Willie Young to dive in low to head Tottenham level halfway through the first half.  The Arsenal striker netted his second to restore the visitors lead before the sides turned round, but John Duncan came to Spurs’ rescue when he finished off Ralph Coates and John Gorman’s good work on the left wing to score from close range late in the match.

Central defender Young was sent off in the 74th minute, being the first Spurs player to be dismissed in matches between the two sides.

23.11.1976 Pat Jennings Testimonial    Home     Won     3-2

Spurs beat Arsenal at White Hart Lane in Pat Jennings’ Testimonial.

It took just two minutes for former Spurs goal-scorer extraordinaire Jimmy Greaves to tap in the first goal of the match, but four minutes later, Sammy Nelson’s drive gave Arsenal an equaliser.  However, a brilliant Peter Taylor goal put Spurs back ahead on 25 minutes.

Just after half-time, Malcolm Macdonald brought the scored back to 2-2 before Greaves knocked home a 66th minute effort and later brought a very good save out of Jimmy Rimmer to stop him completing a hat-trick.

03.04.1976 Division 1     Away     Won     2-0

Coming into the game on a good run, this was the fifth consecutive win for Spurs to put them sixth in the First Division.

An Arsenal chance right from the kick off was missed and Spurs went on to record a deserved victory started by John Pratt’s 16th minute corner kick that went in, as Jimmy Rimmer tried in vain to stop it entering the net.  With 39 minutes gone, John Duncan sealed the win with a powerful header from Naylor’s cross.  Despite Arsenal’s attempts to get back into the match in the second half, they failed to breach the Spurs defence and Willie Young’s header from a corner was cleared off the line by Pat Rice.

.
26.04.1975 Division 1     Away     Lost     0-1

One goal separated the two sides, in the bottom part of the Division 1 table, with a home win by the slenderest of margins gave Arsenal the much needed points.

Jimmy Neighbour intercepted a goal-kick on the edge of the centre-circle and ran at the home defence, only being stopped when Mancini obstructed him.  Brian Kidd’s shot deflected off Perryman to wrong-foot Jennings, but Cyril Knowles stretched out a long left leg to hook the ball off the line, then John Duncan got to Osgood’s clearance, turning away between Mancini and Rice.  He headed for goal until Simpson’s crude lunge fouled him on the edge of the box, getting away without a booking.

Kidd was not to be denied though and when Osgood failed to cut out a Brady ball into the box, the former Manchester United man poked past Jennings to put the home side ahead from a couple of yards out.  Tottenham almost hit back, when Geoff Barnett (standing in for Jimmy Rimmer who had a broken finger) dropped Perryman’s free-kick and Conn prodded the loose ball at goal, only to see Nelson knock the ball off the goal-line.  The pressure built on the Arsenal goal, with Duncan and Conn playing a one-two, but a tackle when about to shoot stopped any danger, then Jones got a foot to a flick-on from a corner and forced Barnett to push the ball away.

Into the second half, Spurs came within a foot of equalising, when Naylor’s straight through ball picked out Perryman’s run, but Barnett came out at his feet.  The ball ran loose and with Barnett losing his bearings, Conn side-footed the ball past the prone players in front of him, but just wide of the goal.  When Kinnear gave the ball away to Kidd on the left, he ran forward, but his poor attempt at a chip was easily saved by Pat Jennings.  When Rice pulled back Alfie Conn, having been out-witted, a free-kick was given and the exasperated Scot sat on the ball.  Working the ball forward, the bounce of the ball went Arsenal’s way and Hornsby fired over from 20 yards out, then Storey volleyed an effort off Jennings’ right hand post.  Pressing for a second goal, the home side had an opening when Hornsby chipped wide from a good position and then Hornsby drew a save from Jennings and latched onto the rebound, turning it goal-wards, only to see Osgood head the ball off the goal-line.

11.05.1972 Division 1     Away     Won     2-0

The final league fixture of Tottenham’s season saw them come out on top of a match with Arsenal at Highbury, winning 2-0.

Playing on a hard surface, play was disjointed and the only worthwhile effort of the first half came near the half-time whistle, with Sammy Nelson forcing Pat Jennings into a save at close quarters.   However, in the 62nd minute, Alan Mullery’s shot beat the keeper to give Tottenham the advantage and this was doubled when Ralph Coates ran onto John Pratt’s pass from deep in his own half to finish with a fine shot that handed Spurs the 2-0 victory.

24.11.1971 Division 1     Home     Drew     1-1

Honours were even after Ray Kennedy gave Arsenal a 35th minute lead with a well-taken goal.  Tottenham had to wait until the 80th minute to grab an equaliser, when Martin Chivers seized on a short back-pass from Pat Rice to slot past Wilson and a defender on the line from a narrow angle on the left to make it 1-1.  Martin Peters’ diving header from six yards out had brought a good stop from Bob Wilson, at the Paxton Road end and Chivers’ long throw produced a shooting chance for Steve Perryman in the 90th minute, forcing Bob Wilson to a finger-tip save, pushing the ball over the bar.

03.05.1971 Division 1     Home     Lost     0-1

A single Ray Kennedy goal won this match for Arsenal, but that does not tell the full story of the game.

Steve Perryman had to abandon his car a mile away and walk to White Hart Lane as a crowd of nearly 52,000 were inside the Lane, but an estimated 100,000 were locked out as battle commenced.  Martin Peters hit the crossbar with a fine effort and Spurs had to clear a McLintock shot off the line, but with just three minutes left Armstrong’s cross was headed in by Kennedy.

Spurs then laid siege to the Arsenal goal, but when a last minute melee in front of the goal ended with Wilson grabbing the ball, the last chance had gone for Tottenham.

02.05.1970 Division 1     Home     Won     1-0

Tottenham played host to Arsenal in this First Division game that they won 1-0 at White Hart Lane.

A long kick upfield by Jennings, saw the ball bounce high on the heavily sanded pitch.  Chivers challenged, Roberts hacked the ball high and Gilzean head on for Peters to plant a header against the bar.  At the other end, Radford played a low ball into the centre of the penalty area and George Graham got on the end of it, but Jennings blocked his shot at point blank range.   Radford threatened in the second half, when a long throw out by Jennings was headed back and the Arsenal striker his a first time left footed shot from the left edge of the penalty area that flew just over Jennings’ bar.

Roger Morgan picked off a loose Arsenal pass in his own half and set off upfield with the ball.  He was robbed by Roberts, but won it back on the left wing, putting in an out-swinging cross that Alan Gilzean stooped to head into the net from close range halfway through the second half.  The two Spurs men linked up once more, with Morgan’s bobbling cross taken on Gilzean’s chest before he unleashed a volley from ten yards out that Wilson managed to beat away.

04.12.1968 League Cup Semi-Final Second Leg     Home     Drew     1-1  (agg :  1-2).

It was League Cup disappointment for Tottenham in the second leg of the semi-final when Radford scored his second goal of the tie to send Arsenal through to a final with Leeds United.

Mike England was used an an auxiliary forward, as he had been in the first leg, but it was midfielder Terry Venables who brought Bob Wilson into action with three shots from distance in the first half.  The game was nervy throughout and was not a great spectacle.  However, Jimmy Pearce and Mike England created a chance for Alan Gilzean, but he poked it over the bar.  Pat Jennings had to be at his best to turn aside a shot from George Armstrong with a full length diving save.

Into the second period, it was Alan Mullery’s through pass that sent Jimmy Pearce away to dink in a cross for Greaves to finish and level the aggregate score halfway through the half.  However, with just three minutes remaining, Armstrong fashioned a cross for Radford to head home and send Arsenal through to a final against Swindon Town, which they lost.  It was a late flourish from Spurs that had nearly denied them, with Peter Collins being pushed forward and he struck the crossbar in the dying moments.

Arsenal were 2-0 ahead inside 20 minutes of the match at White Hart Lane, putting Tottenham’s unbeaten home record reaching back to the end of the 1963-64 season under threat. An effort from Billy McCullough that went in off Laurie Brown and a goal by Joe Baker had given the visitors a flying start and it took goals from Frank Saul in the 35th minute and Alan Gilzean after 75 minutes to level things up.

Derek Possee was replaced by Roy Low, who became the first substitute ever used by Spurs in the Football League

Tottenham topped the league with Arsenal tied for second place as a huge crowd packed into White Hart Lane to witness this top of the table clash.

Forward John White had an early shot cleared off the line, Laurie Brown hit the bar and Joe Baker rattled the woodwork at the other end.  Arsenal took the lead with a goal from Geoff Strong who converted John MacLeod’s cross in the 43rd minute, but Spurs were level before half-time.  Only a fisted save by full-back Freddie Clarke stopped Brown scoring on his impressive debut for Spurs after signing the day before from the opponents in this match !!  However, Jimmy Greaves knocked home the spot kick to score for Spurs.

Two goals by winger Cliff Jones within the space of three minutes gave Spurs a 3-1 win.  His first was a neat finish to Greaves’ pull back from the bye-line and his second from White’s right wing cross.

15.10.1963 Division 1     Away      Drew     4-4

At Highbury, Arsenal left it late to hold Tottenham to a 4-4 draw in this meeting in the First Division.

Nearly 68,000 were in the crowd that witnessed a flicked header, just 20 seconds from time, as Geoff Strong equalised from a John MacLeod corner.

Spurs had gone into the game top of the table with Dave Mackay and John White running the midfield and were soon 2-0 ahead with a typical Jimmy Greaves poacher’s goal after 30 seconds and a thundering Bobby Smith 15th minute drive. However, when Terry Dyson fouled Arsenal winger George Armstrong in the box, George Eastham scored from the penalty spot, but Dave Mackay hit Tottenham’s third.  The scoring wasn’t quite over for the first half, as Eastham pegged Spurs back again before Smith restored the two-goal cushion for Spurs with another goal to make it 4-2 at the break.

A thigh injury to Jimmy Greaves in the 55th minute hindered Tottenham’s attacking efforts, but Arsenal had to wait for Joe Baker brought Arsenal closer with five minutes left and Strong headed in the equaliser to share the points in a pulsating London derby.

23.02.1963 Division 1     Away      Won     3-2

A big crowd gathered for the derby match with Arsenal at Highbury, played out on a snow covered surface and won by Spurs by three goals to two.

A 35th minute Bobby Smith goal gave Tottenham a half time lead, with the opening being engineered by John White and Cliff Jones. It was Welsh winger Jones who doubled the lead shortly after the break, but Geoff Strong soon pulled a goal back for the home team.

Within minutes and with a crowded goalmouth ahead of him, Tony Marchi drove a shot through and into the net to make it 3-1, but during a frantic finish, Joe Baker scored to make the final score 3-2.

An eight goal thriller saw the points shared in a high scoring draw, with Arsenal coming back late in the game to gain a First Division point.   Spurs took a four minute lead when Dave Mackay hit home from 18 yards and John White doubled the lead after 16 minutes.  When White set up Cliff Jones on 26 minutes to fire in a third, it looked a formality for Tottenham to claim the points, but David Court dragged Arsenal back into the match with two goals in a minute and made it 3-2 before the break.

Good play between Blanchflower, White and Les Allen provided an opportunity that Jones accepted before half-time, but George Eastham created an opportunity for John MacLeod, who brought the score back to a one goal deficit with 52 minutes gone and Geoff Strong squared it up at 4-4 with just 17 minutes before the end.

21.01.1961 Division 1     Home      Won     4-2

Eight minutes were on the clock when Arsenal took the lead in this London derby, but Spurs hit back to take both Division One points. A shot from outside the box gave the Gunners the lead, but Tottenham worked their way back into the match, with only two minutes passing before John White played in Less Allen for the equaliser.  Halfway through the first period, Terry Dyson was brought down just inside the area and Danny Blanchflower stepped up to convert the penalty and just before the break, Bobby Smith’s interception of a back-pass by an Arsenal defender saw him able to pass the ball into an unguarded net.

Beating his marker with a tricky dribble along the goal line, Les Allen made it 4-1 on the hour and a minute later, Arsenal pulled the score back to 4-2 with another goal, as Haverty’s shot from the left wing flicked off a Spurs defender to fly past Bill Brown, but there were no further goals and Spurs beat the visitors.

16.01.1960 Division 1     Home      Won     3-0

Tottenham ran out easy 3-0 winners over Arsenal in a First Division match at White Hart Lane.

A snow-covered pitch started this game, but by the time the floodlights lit the ground at the end, it was wet through and Spurs had played some wonderful football in seeing off the challenge of the opposition.

Bill Brown made an early finger-tip save from John Barnwell to push his shot wide, but Spurs were soon laying siege to the Arsenal goal and in a fifteen minute spell with the ball still at the Arsenal end, Bobby Smith missed two good chances.  Smith was fouled on the edge of the area and Blanchflower’s free-kick was saved by Standen at the cost of a corner, which Harmer put onto Maurice Norman’s head and Evans diverted the ball away from goal.  When Arsenal did manage to forge an attack, Brown was equal to Julians’ effort and then Spurs broke up-field to open the scoring.  White’s pass went to Les Allen and the striker made a yard to get his shot through a mass of defenders.

Brown preserved the lead with his boot stopping Haverty’s deflected shot and Julian should have done better with a header that hit the bar and a shot that went wide, when he was through on goal.  Spurs could have gone in at half-time two ahead, when Snedden missed his kick and allowed Smith through and his shot beat the keeper but rolled just wide of the post.

An injury to Evans moved him from back to front as he continued on the field, but left Spurs with a man’s advantage, which they exploited.  While Haverty’s shot bounced off Brown and away, Les Allen fired a low effort against the foot of a post and in the 57th minute, Harmer mesmerised three defenders before passing to Smith, who drove the ball past Standen and into the net.

Once more Julians wasted two good openings, with Brown saving the first and the second being shot wide.  The Spurs response was a goal by Cliff Jones that was disallowed for offside, but then the third did come from Les Allen who headed into an empty net, following a Bobby Smith drive that bounced back off the crossbar.

22.02.1958 Nearly 60,000 crammed into Highbury to see Cliff Jones’ debut for Spurs and the driving rain and sleet did not detract from the spectacle the two teams served up, when a late Tottenham comeback shocked the home side to gain a 4-4 draw at Highbury.

When Gordon Nutt put in an early centre, Ron Henry unfortunately deflected the ball into his own net to give Arsenal the lead. Half an hour into the match, Bobby Smith pulled Spurs level and when the teams turned around the score was the same.

However, Danny Clapton put Arsenal back into the lead and although Tommy Harmer made it 2-2, Spurs found themselves 2-4 behind with only four minutes remaining, with the home team scoring through David Herd and Gordon Nutt.

When Dennis Evans handled the ball in the penalty area, Harmer put the ball down on the spot and converted past the Arsenal keeper Jack Kelsey. It gave Spurs the hope that they might be able to salvage something from the game and they poured forward with Harmer feeding the ball to Cliff Jones, whose shot bounced out to Smith, who fired home low past Kelsey to tie the game up at 4-4.

Fifth place Arsenal came unstuck on their visit to seventeenth placed Spurs in this First Division.

White Hart Lane’s 60,671 crowd saw Bobby Smith give Tottenham an early lead and before half time, the creator of the first, Tommy Harmer, scored a second. Halfway through the second half, Terry Medwin made it 3-0, after being set up by Harmer, but Cliff Holton got a late consolation goal for the visitors, who had been struggling with Vic Groves hobbling with a knee injury after being off the field for 30 minutes.

A fine first half performance by Spurs brought a 25th minute goal by Terry Medwin, but Arsenal hit back to win 3-1.

Bowen scored ten minutes after the Spurs goal to level, hitting a swerving shot from 25 yards out and then it was down to Jack Kelsey to keep Spurs out.  In the 55th minute, Peter Baker’s error let Derek Tapscott in to tap home an easy chance and then Bowen scored from the same distance as his first to put Arsenal into an unassailable 3-1 lead.

20.10.1956 Division 1     Away     Lost     1-3

Both sides were injury-hit as Spurs met Arsenal at Highbury, with the home side coming out on top 3-1.

A lack of precision in Tottenham’s shooting, as they enjoyed dominance in the first half, cost them in the long run, although Bobby Smith received George Robb’s pass and struck the ball past Sullivan in the Arsenal goal with 35 minutes gone.  Within moments, Arsenal had pulled level, with David Herd heading home Derek Tapscott’s cross from close range.

The second half saw Arsenal utilise their wingers, who troubled the Tottenham full-backs, but Stokes had a great chance, being put through on goal before being denied as Sullivan kept out his fierce drive.  Without Medwin on the right wing, Tottenham’s approaches were mainly coming from Robb on the left, but could not find the second goal.  Arsenal did with 23 minutes of the second half played, with Haverty netting after going past Baker and Herd wrapped up the win with two minutes to go.

Arsenal weathered an early period of pressure from Spurs to go on to win 4-1 at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham were without Ron Burgess, who was away on international duty with Wales, but the team pushed onto the Arsenal goal during the first ten minutes, but against the run of play Doug Lishman and new signing Tommy Lawton set up Jimmy Logie to put the visitors into the lead from new signing Lawton’s header on.

Ten minutes later, Logie slid in Arthur Milton, who drove the ball home and then another ten minutes passed before Logie was brought down by Bill Nicholson in the box, giving Forbes the opportunity to put Arsenal a 3-0 ahead.  It didn’t stop there, as ten minutes before the break, Logie scored his second from an acute angle and only George Robb’s second half consolation gave the Spurs crowd anything to cheer about.

29.09.1951 Division 1     Away     Drew     1-1

Spurs went to Highbury and gained a point when they capitalised on a defensive lapse in the Arsenal defence.  A huge crowd watched the match with a reported 20,000 locked out !

Only six minutes had gone when Joe Mercer allowed Peter Murphy to put Tottenham ahead with a 25 yard shot that left Swindin grasping at thin air.  Ted Ditchburn was in outstanding form to help the Spurs team in front of him keep the lead, despite six quickly earned corners and Alf Ramsey kept Arsenal out by heading a shot off the goal-line.  Tottenham did cause Arsenal problems up the left wing and Tommy Harmer struck the base of a goalpost with a low effort.

Early in the second half, Swindin produced a good save to push Les Medley’s rising shot over the bar, but Spurs held out until Jimmy Logie’s cross from a corner was header powerfully past Ditchburn by Holton to level the scores.  Both sides attacked and Harmer’s over-playing instead of shooting cost them some goal-scoring opportunities.  Bill Nicholson let go a rasping drive from a corner that pulled a very good stop by the goalkeeper, with a later header denying Sonny Walters a better scoring chance as he was well-placed behind the Spurs defender.

08.01.1949 FA Cup Third Round     Away     Lost     0-3

An FA Cup Third Round tie at Highbury ended in a 3-0 win for the home side.

Spurs, then of the Second Division, were managed by former Arsenal winger Joe Hulme and although he should have taken the team back to his old home ground where the reigning league champions lay in wait, his recuperation from illness meant he was at White Hart Lane watching the Reserves against Brentford.  Hulme brought in Harry Gilberg in an inside forward role in place of the industrious Eddie Baily and the swap failed to inspire Tottenham.

Arsenal went ahead early in the game when Ian McPherson managed to beat Ted Ditchburn with a header in at the near post from a narrow angle after the keeper had kept the home side at bay.  It was in the second half, Freddie Cox went close with a shot that missed the Arsenal goal by inches, but the home team showed the difference in league placings as goals from Don Roper, firing in from a central position and a simple goal by Doug Lishman took them through to the Fourth Round, although Vic Buckingham’s free-kick caused George Swindin into a save near the end of the game.

With Spurs having been demoted thanks to skull-duggery by Arsenal’s hierarchy a couple of seasons earlier, the bad feeling spilled over into this match after Tottenham had rightly reclaiming their place in the top flight.

Tottenham were once more the victims, this time on the end of some brutal tackling.  Winger ‘Fanny’ Walden was forced off after only 15 minutes having been kicked out of the action and by the final whistle, both Alec Lindsay and Bert Bliss were heavily limping.  As there were not substitutes in this era, Spurs were reduced to nine men for much of the game, with Walden taken out of the game and Lindsay was off the pitch receiving treatment.  The referee – Mr Austin – had allowed Arsenal to get away with their “physical” approach without sanction.

Boreham gave Arsenal the lead just after half-time and scored a second near the end of the game.  But Spurs battled against the injustice and were determined not to let the rough-house tactics succeed.  Near the end, Lindsay grabbed a late consolation goal for Spurs, but the Arsenal players – not wanting anything to go against them – claimed they had been distracted by someone blowing a whistle that had made them think the referee had blown for full time and so they had not challenged Lindsay (unusual in the context of the rest of the match).  The Arsenal players surrounded the referee to contest the goal and there was a certain amount of pushing of him with punches thrown on and off the field.

The Football Association received the referee’s report and both clubs were charged with bringing the game into disrepute.  The Association’s Committee of Enquiry came to the decision that Tottenham’s Bert Smith had used foul and abusive language and he was suspended for four weeks.  Arsenal’s Alex Graham was severely reprimanded for retaliating while Stephen Dunn, the Gooners’ goalkeeper, was severely denounced for his protests to the referee after the Spurs goal, but neither was punished any further.

A penalty goal gave Arsenal a home win over Spurs in a rain lashed match at Highbury. The penalty came when Jimmy Dimmock was adjudged to have brought down in the area and Graham, who was captain for this – his benefit – match, converted from the spot in the first half.  Spurs had been restricted by an thigh injury to Grimsdell after about 25 minutes, but he was unable to continue in the second half.

Dimmock came close to making amends for his earlier indiscretion with a run that saw him shoot as Tim Williamson advanced, but the ball was cleared as it was going in by defender Alf Baker.

16.04.1910 Division 1     Home     Drew     1-1

Both Spurs and Woolwich Arsenal were near the foot of the table when they met in a First Division encounter at White Hart Lane.  Played out in front of a fervent 39,800 crowd paying receipts of £1,188, the game was fiercely fought out watched by fans on the touchline and on the roof.

The lead was taken by the visitors in the 16th minute, with Rod McEachrane sending Frank Heppinstall away down the left wing and his cross into the box was palmed out by goalkeeper Tiny Joyce straight to Charlie McGibbon, who netted from close in.  There were few other chances in the first period, with both sides cancelling each other out.

The second half was a different affair, with Tottenham dominating and Percy Humphreys, Bob Steel and Jack Curtis all went close to scoring, with Woolwich defender Andy Ducat robbing Humphreys just before he was about to shoot.

McEachrane had to receive treatment for an accidental kick in a goalmouth scramble and while reduced to ten men, the South Londoners were hit by a Spurs goal.  With 69 minutes gone, Bobby Steel played in Curtis to strike a drive that flew in just inside the Arsenal keeper Hugh McDonald’s left hand post.

With Spurs pressing, it was only the odd breakaway that threatened the Spurs goal and most of the chances were at the other end before the game finished 1-1.
