Spurs Youth team crashed out of the FA Youth Cup in the Third Round with a 1-3 defeat to Barnsley up in Yorkshire.
A third minute goal saw Spurs up against it from the early stages and it was a spectacular scissors kick by Barnsley’s Danny Rose from Noble-Lazarus’ 16th minute cross that gave the home team a shock lead. Within a minute, Tottenham could have equalised, but Kudus Oyenuga was stretching too far to control a glanced header that took Harry Kane’s cross just wide.
Jordan Archer was the busier of the two keepers and his rush to throw himself point-blank in the way of Rose’s 10 yard shot saved Spurs from slipping further behind. At the other end, it took 12 minutes before Spurs troubled Lidakevicius when the keeper needed his foot to stop Oyenuga’s shot that looked like beating him, after Harry Kane had put the striker through and he had cut inside his man to make a shooting opportunity. The Barnsley goalie was in action again just after 25 minutes, when he tipped Oyenuga’s 25 yard drive over the bar.
Then, as the game approached half-time, Spurs went a further goal behind in injury time. Carlisle made a good run to the line and pulled a ball back to Clark, who hit a shot on the turn from 10 yards out to beat Archer.
Having conceded just before the break, it was important for Tottenham to get back into the game early in the second half, but nine minutes in, it was the home team who went 3-0 up when Carlisle was again the provider, this time putting in a left wing free-kick that Riley got ahead of the Spurs defence to nod home at the near post.
Spurs began to push to get back into the match and Tapping twice brought saves from the Barnsley goalie and Harry Kane went even closer in the 73rd minute, when he made room for a shot that hit the left hand post form 10 yards out. However, a minute later, Jack Barthram went around Lidakevicius, only to be taken down and Kane got the better of the keeper by sending him the wrong way from the spot to make it 3-1.
A frantic finish saw Noble-Lazarus shoot well wide when well placed and then Jesse Waller-Lassen had a shot blocked in a goalmouth melee and it fell to Calum Tapping, but he screwed his effort wide. In added time, Waller-Lassen played in a low cross and it was taken well by Oyenuga, but his shot failed to find the target and Spurs faced an early exit from the competition.
