30.01.1999 | Premier League Away Drew 1-1.
Bit of a novelty this – not playing Wimbledon. Blackburn included two debutants in their side; Matt Jansen and Jason McAteer, both of whom had been linked with Spurs in the recent past. Tim Sherwood did not play due to suspension, but will he be a Spurs player soon? Chris Sutton did not play due to injury, I would dearly like to see him at Spurs. The game started with Rovers having the early chances. Spurs then established themselves and created numerous openings – all spurned. Ferdinand had an excellent opportunity only to head straight at Filan. Iversen also missed. As half time approached the Spurs defence seemed to freeze and allow Matt Jansen to bring down a looping pass, swivel and hit a left foot volley past a motionless Walker in to the corner of the net. Jansen may have been offside, but in any event Sol should not have allowed him to turn. During the interval, we were entertained by countless re-runs of the goal on the Blackburn Jumbotron accompanied by the ranting of the local commentator who had decided it was the best goal in the Premier that day ! Spurs gradually built up the pressure in the second half and you could feel the goal coming. It arrived courtesy of Iversen’s head after Filan had fumbled under pressure from Ferdinand. Almost immediately Jason Wilcox let his frustration get the better of him by committing a ludicrous foul on Nielsen close to the halfway line which earned him a straight red card. Blackburn were reduced to ten men. Were Spurs going to record their first League away win under George? No. Rovers defended resolutely and we could not break them down. Overall a fair result and another well earned point. Now back to the Dons (Groan). MEHSTG TOP MAN – Steffen Freund (for his involvement & commitment). Eric the Viking Teams : – |

09.09.1998 | Premier League Home Won 2-1
Having removed Sherwood from the Rovers midfield by “unsettling” him and losing Sol and Dazza from our side, the match looked all set for an away win. Nobody seemed very hopeful beforehand, but once the match kicked off, the side appeared to have rediscovered the will to play. It always surprises me when a team plays for a new manager. What changes within those few days? Anyway, Ferdinand looked lively and Nielsen was fighting hard in the middle of the park. Then, as almost always happens, Spurs went a goal down. Sutton lobbed the ball into the box, Flitcroft headed back to Gallacher, who controlled on his chest and volleyed past Baardsen from the edge of the box. Les headed just over and Espen came to our rescue, when Dailly ran through into the box unchallenged. He produced an even better save when springing across his goal to push out a shot from Wilcox unmarked on the penalty spot. Baardsen dived amongst the feet to get the ball and a follow-up shot was deflected just wide by Berti. Tottenham got an equaliser when Ginola’s sharp free-kick found Ferdie elude his marker and power a header past Flowers. Ginola went close and Spurs were putting together some good football. The action was still at the other end though and Baardsen got down smartly to keep out a low drive from Dailly again. Into the second half, Spurs started the quicker and five minutes after the break took the lead. Ginola took the ball from Nielsen, beat his man and switching inside, placed a perfect cross onto the head of the inrushing Nielsen, who beat Flowers from ten yards out. It was no more than Spurs deserved and although Baardsen was brave and agile in keeping Rovers at bay, Blackburn also rode their luck in their own area. Vega came in for some booing after he let a ball go between his legs for Baardsen, but almost let in Gallacher and Fox played well, making me wonder why he can’t play like that all the time. Three times Flowers spilled the ball after shots from Spurs players, but just managed to recover in time. Tottenham owe their victory to Dailly, who toe-poked an easy chance a long way wide when it looked easier to hit the target and the lead was preserved by Baardsen, saving a late effort from Peacock. A much better display from Tottenham tonight and a much better shape to the team. Berti, Clemence and Nielsen worked tirelessly in midfield and Les looked more like the old Les upfront. At the back, Calderwood and Vega played well and Tramezzani had his best game so far. Ginola showed what can happen when he uses the ball and Baardsen looks like he will be keeping Ian the Saxon on the bench for a little while. MEHSTG TOP MAN : ALLAN NIELSEN Teams : – |

07.02.1998 | Premier League Away Won 3-0.
Spurs bounced back from their FA Cup defeat to beat Blackburn Rovers comprehensively at Ewood Park. Nicola Berti had already gone close with one effort before the Italian converted Fox’s cross at the far post to give Spurs a 37th minute lead. In the closing stages, Spurs piled on the pressure scoring through Armstrong and Fox, who both fired powerful shots past the Rovers keeper. The fallout from the Barnsley match was quite horrendous and the prospect of bringing home the bacon from Blackburn looked decidedly unlikely, the way they had been playing. However, I would happily trade a place in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup if we could have three points from the League game at Oakwell in the near future. Keeping the team together after the Yorkshire defeat may have given them the opportunity to have clear the air talks and to reassess the tactics in the light of the new injuries the side had suffered (Sling us some arrows). The injury to Klinsmann was the major concern. With Rory Allen not the finished article and becoming as injury-prone as the long-lost Darren Anderton; Neale Fenn turning Div. 3 defenders inside out while on loan to Leyton Orient; Chris Armstrong only just back from injury, where did this leave the forward line and what were the options available to Gross ? Well, he could have played Ginola upfront alongside Les, but I feel that this would have led to David dropping back to find the ball and isolating Les. I was happy to see Christian play some sort of inverted Christmas Tree formation (just the thing for this time of year) allowing Ginola to play between the front man and midfield, thus acting as a go-between and not detracting from one or the other when he went walkabout. It could be that having been forced into the position and tactics at Ewood Park, some good could have come of it. Indeed, the strengthening of the midfield by the returning Nielsen and Howells also firms up that area and acts as a springboard for Spurs to bounce their attacks off. The side did ride their luck during the match, but it was luck that had been owing to the team for some weeks now. Indeed, the “was it across the line/wasn’t it across the line” debate even went our way and without too much dispute from the Rovers players. The two goals at the end did flatter us, but then how many games this season (West Ham at home for one) should we have scored more goals in. The score-line certainly helped reduce our burgeoning goal difference which was about to assume Swindon style proportions. News that Spurs were looking to line up Raddy Antic as their new manager in the summer came as somewhat of a shock. With Gross still warm in the seat, it seems the height of bad manners to even hint at a new man coming in when the present incumbent hasn’t even had a fair go. I presume that Antic’s name was put in the frame because of his association with football at Luton and therefore, David Pleat. There is no doubt that he has been a success at Atletico Madrid, but this season has fallen back from the leading pack that includes arch rivals Real and therefore, has brought down the wrath of Jesus (Gil) on his position. For too long there has been a culture at the club for chopping and changing managers. Not many get the chance to implement a five-year plan. We need some stability and should we survive our present perilous position I’m sure that Herr Gross will take Spurs forward. We must hope however, that if Arsene buggers off for Real, that the name on the contract as manager at the Arse isn’t Antic’s. With more important games to come, it will be necessary to get as many players as fit as we can and the failure to get Schmidt his work permit, will make Gross’s job harder in this respect, but hopefully, the side can settle down to a more regular XI and put together a run of results. I never did like it down there where the position numbers are high and the points are low. It’s a hell of a downer !! Teams : – |

20.09.1997 | Premier League Home Drew 0-0
A scoreless match result did not tell the tale of this game, in which Spurs played well without a lot of luck. Tim Flowers was in outstanding form, making excellent saves from Howells in the 16th minute and then Wilcox cleared Mahorn’s effort off the line shortly afterwards. Dominguez forced Flowers to save well once more, while Valery managed to clear the ball off the line from Howells in a goalmouth scramble. Even though Blackburn were reduced to ten men by the second yellow card for Valery, Spurs could not break Rovers down and had to settle for a point, despite Howells and Dominguez going close and with Campbell blocking a Sutton shot. 29.01.1997 | Premier League Home Won 2-1
Steffen Iversen gave Spurs the lead in the 40th minute of this Premier League game, finishing at the far post following Fox’s cross before Colin Hendry equalised for Rovers from a 56th minute Jason Wilcox corner. Walker denied Le Saux’s fierce drive with a fine one-handed save, with Flowers relieved to see Sinton’s cross bounce back off the bar and he was alert to keep Spurs at bay. But then, with 82 minutes on the clock, Andy Sinton popped up to hit the winner for Tottenham, chesting down Allan Nielsen’s long-throw and firing past the Rovers goalie. Teams : – |

17.08.1996 | Premier League Away Won 2-0
An opening day win at Ewood Park for Spurs was tinged with sadness and anger. Two Chris Armstrong goals won the game for Tottenham, but they lost Gary Mabbutt with a broken leg in the 18th minute, after Graham Fenton followed through on a tackle after the ball had gone. How he didn’t get a red card, only the referee knows. Tottenham then lost Mabbutt’s replacement as Stuart Nethercott was injured ten minutes after coming on. Spurs took the lead in the 32nd minute, when David Howells crossed to Armstrong who flung himself headlong to steer his header past Flowers. Spurs strung together a 16 pass move to create the second goal, which was finished off by Armstrong after being set up by Howells and Fox. Teams : – |

16.03.1996 | Premier League Home Lost 2-3
Two Alan Shearer goals had Tottenham playing catch-up in this Premier League meeting at White Hart Lane. The goals came in the eighth and 34th minutes, but Teddy Sheringham grabbed one goal back with a 62nd minute goal and then equalised in the 80th minute, only to see Shearer hit his hat-trick goal as the clock showed the match was two minutes into injury time. There had been a one minute’s silence for the Dunblane shootings before the kick off. Teams : – NOTE : – Jason Cundy’s last appearance in a Spurs shirt. |

30.12.1995 | Premier League Away Won 2-1
Blackburn Rovers brought a ten game unbeaten away run to an end for Spurs with a 2-1 win at Ewood Park. Midfielder Nicky Marker hit the back of the Spurs net in the 31st minute and the home side’s lead was doubled just four minutes before half-time when Alan Shearer scored. Spurs did hit back with a goal from Teddy Sheringham in the 53rd minute with a neat volley, but Tottenham could not find an equaliser in the remaining time. 05.02.1995 | Premier League Home Won 3-1
Spurs took on title-chasing Blackburn Rovers at White Hart Lane in front of the Sky TV cameras and won 3-1. 18 minutes in and Spurs went ahead as Jurgen Klinsmann took Darren Anderton’s through pass and slipped the ball into the net through goalkeeper Bobby Mimms’ legs. On the half hour, Anderton was Tottenham’s second goal-scorer, with a shot that took a big deflection off Rovers centre-half Colin Hendry to make it 2-0, as Spurs sparkled in attack. In the second half, Blackburn pulled a goal back when Tim Sherwood netted from close range, but 10 minutes from the end, Anderton made the third Spurs goal with a cross that Nicky Barmby headed home to make the final score 3-1. 05.11.1994 | Premier League Away Lost 0-2
Rovers overcame a determined Spurs side, under the caretaker management of Steve Perryman, at Ewood Park with an eighth minute goal putting them on their way. Chris Sutton’s low cross into the box was deflected onto the post by Alan Shearer’ touch and Jason Wilcox hit the rebound into the net to give Rovers the lead. Spurs created a heading chance for Teddy Sheringham, which he put narrowly wide and then Jurgen Klinsmann shot over when well placed. Into the second half, a forty ninth minute foul on Alan Shearer by Justin Edinburgh in the box, gave the striker the opportunity to get up and convert the spot-kick to make it 2-0 to Rovers. Spurs were knocked down to 13th place in the table in this Premier League match, but the three points were among those that took Blackburn to their league title at the end of the season. |

12.02.1994 | Premier League Home Lost 0-2
Spurs drew a blank at home to Blackburn Rovers, who took the points from this Premier League match. Rosenthal supplied early activity for Tim Flowers in the Rovers goal, making him save well twice and Ripley drew a save from Walker at the other end. With an hour on the clock, Shearer headed in the opening goal of the game and eleven minutes later, Gallagher finished off a good move to make it 2-0. Nick Barmby, Kevin Scott and Darren Caskey all had good efforts, but Spurs were unable to get back into the match. Teams : – |

01.12.1993 | League Cup Fourth Round Home Won 1-0
Spurs took this League Cup Fourth Round match with a 1-0 win that came against a determined Blackburn side. Tottenham were kept at bay by former keeper Bobby Mimms, who produced fine stops from efforts by Dozzell and Barmby shot over when through in the 82nd minute. Spurs had moved Campbell forward from defence to hit a 64th minute shot after Samways, Edinburgh and Barmby linked to give him the chance to see Tottenham through. Teams : – |

Alan Shearer produced the strike that won this match in the 15th minute, firing a shot past Spurs keeper Erik Thorstvedt to earn the three points for Blackburn, in which they dominated and only a fine performance from the Norwegian goalie, the margin could have been much bigger. 05.05.1993 | Premier League Home Lost 1-2
The last home match of the season saw Tottenham slip to a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers. A 22nd minute strike from Mike Newell gave Rovers the lead, heading in at the far post to convert Stuart Ripley’s cross. The Blackburn striker added a second in the 56th minute to finish off a low cross from the left that he shot home, with another Blackburn player unmarked too. Darren Anderton scored with four minutes remaining, firing a shot across the keeper, to make it a grandstand finish, but Spurs could not get an equaliser in the time remaining. Teams : – |

07.11.1992 | Premier League Away Won 2-0
Goals from Teddy Sheringham from the penalty spot and David Howells won this Premier League match for Spurs. Tottenham went ahead when Vinny Samways’ left wing cross was headed down by Teddy Sheringham for David Howells to knock the ball past former Spurs keeper Bobby Mimms from five yards out. The goal that put Spurs out of Blackburn’s reach came when Gordon Durie jinked down the right and was felled in the box by Colin Hendry, allowing Sheringham to score from the spot to secure the three points. 09.11.1988. | League Cup Third Round replay Away Won 2-1 (after extra time)
The League Cup Third Round replay went all the way to extra time as the teams proved difficult to separate. Chris Waddle hit the bar in the 27th minute, but it was only after the game had finished 0-0 and gone into extra time that Spurs progressed to the next round. 106 minutes was on the clock when Paul Gascoigne’s free kick was headed close to the ground by Mitchell Thomas and the ball went in off the goalpost to put Tottenham 1-0 up. However, that lead only lasted for three minutes as a free kick by Ally Dawson was deflected past Bobby Mimms, but within a minute, Paul Stewart broke past two defenders to shoot home to score the winning goal. 01.11.1988. | League Cup Third Round Home Drew 0-0
Spurs dominated against Second Division Rovers in this League Cup Third Round tie at the Lane, with Paul Moran hitting the post and the winger looked to have a header going in, but it was handled in front of goal but apparently out of the sight of the match officials. The game ended in a goal-less draw, but only after Spurs had been denied another penalty when Paul Stewart was brought down as he bore down on goal. Spurs – Bobby Mimms, Gary Stevens, Mitchell Thomas, Terry Fenwick, Chris Fairclough, Gary Mabbutt, Paul Moran, Paul Gascoigne (Vinny Samways 52), Chris Waddle, Paul Stewart, Paul Allen |

This Division One match ended the season after being postponed from the opening day (21.08.1965) because of a polio epidemic in Blackburn. A single Jimmy Greaves goal won the match for Spurs against a Blackburn side who were already relegated before this game kicked off. Phil Beal created the opportunity for Greaves after 22 minutes, but Tottenham were indebted to Bill Brown, who kept a busy Rovers side at bay. Teams : – NOTE : – Terry Venables made his Spurs debut, signing just hours before the game. |

29.01.1966 | Division 1 Away Won 4-0
Spurs ran out comfortable winners as injury-hit Blackburn travelled to White Hart Lane. Tottenham were missing broken leg victim Maurice Norman and Cliff Jones with a thigh strain, but Jimmy Greaves’ return to action after ten weeks out with jaundice meant that Rovers were the victims of his enforced lay-off. It was Frank Saul who opened the scoring though, having rounded the Blackburn goalkeeper Else, the striker slammed the ball into an empty goal for the first goal and Greaves then added a second. Strike partner Alan Gilzean rounded off the win with a brace of goals, his second from the edge of the six-yard box, that even soon to be Spurs defender Mike England could not help keep out. 07.09.1963 | Division 1 Away Lost 2-7
Tottenham suffered at the hands of Blackburn Rovers as they went down 2-7 at Ewood Park in this First Division match. England international Bryan Douglas opened the scoring for Rovers, with Fred Pickering working hard to create a goal for Andy McEvoy and Douglas setting up the Irishman’s second goal on the half hour. This prompted a response from Tottenham, who scored goals from Jimmy Greaves and a Dave Mackay pile-driver that left goalkeeper Fred Else helpless. That was as good as it got for Spurs who were over-run in the second half. Mike England rose high to head home for Rovers to make it 4-2 and when McEvoy darted in to score a fifth, the game was almost beyond Spurs. In the last twenty minutes McEvoy scored his fourth of the match and Pickering’s industrious performance brought a well-deserved goal to make the final score 7-2. Teams : – |

With a fine performance Spurs overcame Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at the Lane, despite a determined late fight-back from the Lancashire side. An eighth minute goal paved the way for the victory as Alex Lindsay raced through onto a ball by Jack Elkes cross from the left wing to shoot wide of Blackburn keeper Ronnie Sewell. Rovers hit back within ten minutes, when Jack Byers centred for his opposite wing man Jack Crisp to run in and plant a header past George Maddison. The second half saw Jimmy Seed dominate the midfield as Spurs took a grip on the game, while the Tottenham defence tidied up any threat of an attack from Blackburn. When Tottenham attacked, they were often caught offside, including once when Jack Elkes scored from close range, but the Spurs forward made the most of an inviting cross from Fanny Walden to head in what proved to be the winning goal. It wasn’t for the want of Blackburn trying to level the score again with their forward line causing nervous moments for the Tottenham defenders, but when forced to shoot from long distance, Maddison kept out efforts from Crisp and Jack Byers.
