Spurs v Blackburn Rovers Notes
. | |
1965-66 | The away game scheduled for the opening day of the season had to be postponed because of an outbreak of Polio in the town and was eventually played as the last game of the season. |
. | |
16.03.1996 | There was a one minute’s silence before kick-off for those killed in the Dunblane shooting. |
. | |
29.04.2012 | Blackburn Rovers fail to have one shot at goal in the whole game. |
. |
They are linked with both
. | |
Willie Almond | . |
. | |
Steve Archibald | The Scottish striker spent a spell on loan at Blackburn from Barcelona scoring six goals in twenty one games at Ewood Park between December 1987 and May 1988. |
. | |
Osvaldo Ardiles | Spurs legend who signed in 1978 and made 311 appearances scoring 25 goals, but was so much more important for Tottenham and for the game in general, being one of the first foreign players from outside Europe to sign for an English club. Ossie played seven games on loan at Ewood Park in between March and May 1988. |
. | |
David Bentley | Tricky winger who started his career at Arsenal, before moving onto Blackburn in August 2005 on loan and permanently in January 2006, where he was a big crowd favourite, scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United on his debut one day later. He decided he wanted to leave having played 123 games and scoring 21 goals and Spurs paid £16 million for the England man in July 2008. However, he never really clicked at Spurs playing few games and being shipped out on loan (becoming the first Englishman to play in the Russian League while at FC Rostov) and suffering injury. |
. | |
Mark Bowen | . |
. | |
Noel Brotherston | A FA Youth Cup winner with Tottenham, Brotherston was a busy forward, who could play wide too. Never given much of an opportunity at Spurs, he moved to Blackburn and played a considerable part in their promotions through the leagues. Notable for his balding pate at an early age, Neil went on to play for Bury and Scarborough before retiring and becoming a painter-decorator, but he died young in 1994 of a heart attack. |
. | |
Ray Clarke | . |
. | |
Ellis Crompton | . |
. | |
Ronnie Dix | . |
. | |
Mike England | The Welsh defender was part of the Blackburn Rovers FA Youth Cup winning side in 1959 and impressed on promotion to the first team that Tottenham signed him after 165 games and 21 goals for Rovers for £95,000 – a record fee for a defender in 1966. Had started as an inside forward at Ewood Park, played on the wing and in midfield, before settling at the back and had a hugely successful time at Spurs, winning the FA Cup in his first season and then won League Cup and UEFA Cup winners medals before retiring in March 1975. Played 391 times for Spurs scoring 19 goals. Was a well respected manager of Wales from 1980-1988, but a failure to qualify for major competition finals cost him his post. |
. | |
Brad Friedel | . |
. | |
Fred Hall | Blackburn defender from 1935 to 1946, he played 23 times in our war-time side as a guest. |
. | |
Ted Harper | . |
. | |
Archie Hughes | . |
. | |
Jim Iley | . |
. | |
John Joyce | . |
. | |
Dilan Markanday | . |
. | |
Willie McIver | Blackburn played for Blackburn from 1901 until 1908 playing 126 times in the league before moving on and returning to play for Rovers during World War 1. He ended up playing three games as a war-time guest at Spurs around Christmas 1919. |
. | |
Bobby Mimms | Former Halifax Town, Rotherham United and Everton goalkeeper who played 37 times in the league for Spurs between 1988 and 1990. Joined Rovers in December 1990 of £250,000, becoming their club record signing at the time. Made over 150 appearances for Blackburn, helping them to promotion through the 1992 play-offs, but played only four games in their Premier League title winning side of 1994-95, which wasn’t enough to win a medal. Left to join Crystal Palace in 1996 and played for Preston North End, Rotherham United, York City before he finished his playing career at Mansfield Town, although has had a number of goalkeeping coaching positions around the world since, including one back at Ewood Park from 2008 to 2012. |
. | |
Danny Murphy | . |
. | |
Ashley Phillips | . |
. | |
Paul Robinson | Signed for Spurs in 2004, becoming England’s goalkeeper in the process, but had a crisis of confidence after a Euro 2008 qualifier in Croatia and lost his Spurs place. Spurs brought in a new keeper in Gomes and Robbo moved to Blackburn on 25.07.2008 for £3.5 million on a five year deal. |
. | |
Tim Sherwood | Attritional midfielder who made his name with Watford and Norwich City, before joining Blackburn Rovers, where he was one of Kenny Dalglish’s first signings and captained Jack Walker’s team to the 1995 Premier League title. Played 300 times for Rovers before he went on to end his playing days at Spurs, signed for £4 million, where he was part of the losing 2002 League Cup final team and went on to make over 100 appearances for Tottenham. Retired after playing for Portsmouth and Coventry City in 2008 to join Harry Redknapp’s coaching team, became Technical Director in 2012 and took over as Spurs manager in December 2013 until the end of that season. |
. | |
Graeme Souness | He was on our professional staff from May 1970 until joining Middlesbrough during January 1973. His only senior outing was as a substitute in a UEFA Cup tie against Keflavik during September 1971. |
