22.10.1977 Spurs hit nine goals without reply in a great performance in this Second Division match.

21 minutes into the match , Colin Lee scored his first goal for Spurs, shooting home after a cross from Glenn Hoddle and within four minutes he had doubled the lead with a header on the end of John Pratt’s corner.  Tottenham went 3-0 ahead with a minute to go before the half-time whistle, as Peter Taylor converted another fine cross by Hoddle.

With Keith Burkinshaw missing the game as he was away on club business, Spurs went on to play an expansive game in the second half with some wonderful football played.  In the 56th minute, Ian Moores scored, with Colin Lee completing his hat-trick a minute later as Tottenham went 5-0 ahead.  Moores sealed his own treble with two quick-fire goals in two minutes and then it became four for new signing Lee as the score reached eight.

Having been the architect of a number of the goals, Hoddle completed the rout with Moores’ cross volleyed home for the ninth Tottenham goal.

After this game, Spurs lost just three League matches in the remainder of the season, but ended up in a tight finish with Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion, as Bolton Wanderers finished top of the table.  Spurs ended up one point behind Southampton and gained promotion on goal difference over the Seagulls, edging them out +34 to +25, with the difference being the nine goals scored against Bristol Rovers in this match !

08.01.1921 The First Round of the FA Cup in 1920 was equivalent to the Third Round these days and was the first step on Spurs’ road to winning the trophy in this season.    Only two minutes into the game, Rovers lost a player through injury and goalkeeper Jesse Whatley produced a fine performance to keep Spurs at bay.  An early lead was gained from Jimmy Seed’s powerful shot that set Tottenham on their way and a 12th minute Tommy Clay penalty put them 2-0 ahead.

Fanny Walden and Bert Smith made it four before the interval, but Rovers pulled a goal back into the second half, ahead of Jimmy Cantrell netting Tottenham’s fifth goal.  The visitors then scored another, but a late Bert Bliss effort gave Spurs a 6-2 final score.
