Chelsea Reserves v Spurs Match Reports

Alfie Devine had two early opportunities, forcing Bergstrom to save his header and from the resulting corner, when the ball was played back in he fired a drive off target.  A goal against the run of play in the 19th minute gave Chelsea the lead, as the ball was cleared against defender Rankine, who was up for a corner and when Josh Oluwayemi went for the ball, he was deemed to have brought down Vale, who got up to stick the penalty away.

Spurs kept driving forward and Devine again went close, denied by a block and J’Neil Bennett brought a save out of the Chelsea keeper, while Malachi Walcott-Fagan met two Harvey White crosses, but was denied each time.  Then Chelsea went further ahead two minutes before the break, when Vale drove in from the left side of the box.  Brooklyn Foster-Lyons was denied a goal in added time by an offside flag.  

Three minutes into the second half, Marcel Lavinier played the ball through to Dilan Markanday, who clipped a neat shot over Bergstrom from the left as the keeper went to ground.  The keeper stuck out a leg to block another Markanday shot nearly halfway through the half, but in the 67th minute, Devine’s pass found Bennet, who turned and fired a curling shot inside the post out of Bergstrom’s reach.

Spurs had the upper hand towards the end, with substitute Yago Santiago bringing a good save out of the Blues’ keeper, who seven minutes from time brought him down, with Harvey White stepping up to take the penalty.  Bergstrom guessed right and stopped the spot-kick and when White followed in the rebound, defender Mbuyamba got there first to kick the ball away.  In between the two incidents, George MacEachran sent in a free-kick that missed everyone and fortunately for SPurs, also missed the goal, narrowly passing wide of the far post.

Spurs hit back with Gilberto crossing to Takuri Mtandari, who headed over from six yards out with a quarter of an hour gone, then Livermore hit a shot to Sebek’s left, but the keeper dropped on the ball.  The misses were costly, as Chelsea attacked, with Queresma’s right wing cross providing Borini with a great chance to head home from the edge of the six yard box and give Chelsea a 29th minute lead.

Sebek was brought into action in the 35th minute, when Maghoma and Dawkins swapped passes for Maghoma to hit an 18 yard shot which made the keeper palm the ball out.  Two minutes on and Spurs once more threatened to score, with Bostock’s low ball into the box from the left side of the area finding Kyle Fraser-Allen getting ahead of his marker, but being unable to keep the ball down from close range at the near post.

The teams changed ends with Chelsea holding the 1-0 advantage, but this was doubled within three minutes of the re-start.  Sala played in a cross and as Stephen Caulker slid in to try to cut the ball out, he could only divert it past Alnwick.  But still Tottenham pressed forward and when Sebek could only flap at Nathan Byrne’s cross, it dropped to Fraser-Allen, who was at an acute angle and just failed to knock it back into an unguarded net.

Just after the hour, Alnwick had to save from Sala, who had taken the ball off Mtandari and the 25-yarder was pushed over by the Spurs goalie.  In the 70th minute, Jake Livermore received his second red card in successive games, for a foul on Mellis, leaving Tottenham down to ten men and chasing the game.  Chelsea were not under much pressure from this point and Alnwick made a super save, managing to push Sala’s shot from 10 yards out over the bar.

With Spurs now being pushed back towards their own goal, a third goal came for Chelsea with 15 minutes left.  Nouble took the ball down and hit a shot across the Tottenham keeper, but Adam Smith was behind him and cleared off the line.  However, the ball fortuitously dropped for Borini, who shot into the net from around the penalty spot to complete the victory for the Pensioners.

In the 13th minute, Gareth Bale took a shot on goal and the partial block deflected the ball into the path of Danny Rose, who shot first time past the goalie, but Bridcutt appeared on the line to clear it away.  At the other end in the next attack, Ben Alnwick produced a good save from Mineiro, after he was set up with a 30 yard shooting opportunity by Stoch.

On 25 minutes, Spurs doubled their lead when a move that started at the back ended with Pavlyuchenko putting the ball through to Frazier Campbell on the right side of the penalty area and his shot was dinked past Taylor to make it 2-0.  However, Spurs still had to be vigilant at the back as Alnwick beat away an effort from Borini and then got up to parry away an overhead kick by Michael Mancienne from the resulting corner.

After the break, the Spurs keeper was called upon to deny Stoch, when he arrowed a shot towards the top corner from a 20 yard free-kick, but in the 63rd minute, Huddlestone had more success from a free-kick, when he curled a low shot into the corner of the net.

Spurs had the chance to go 4-0 ahead in the 74th minute, but after Ofori-Twusami handled Campbell’s cross, Roman Pavlyuchenko hit the spot-kick down the middle and too high.  This miss would have added to a more comprehensive win, but the 4-0 score-line was achieved three minutes from time, when Campbell was brought down by Philliskirk in the penalty area and got up to stick the penalty past Taylor, who went the wrong way.

The Tottenham five game unbeaten run crashed to a halt, with a controversial decision changing the balance of the game.

Fabio Ferreira had gone close after eight minutes before he swung a 24th minute cross into the Spurs box to Franco Di Santo, who was unmarked, but couldn’t keep his shot down on target.  Chris Gunter played a ball over the Chelsea defence to send Kyle Fraser-Allen through, but keeper Searle did enough to prevent him getting around him as he raced out to meet the Spurs winger.  Just before the break, Younghusband played in a free-kick that Jimmy Smith failed to meet properly when a couple of yard out and Tommy Forecast saved the weak effort.

With 54 minutes gone, Smith latched onto Di Santo’s flick and although Jacques Maghoma was pulling away from the Chelsea man, he went down two yards outside the area and the referee not only awarded a penalty, but sent Maghoma off.  Di Santo scored from the penalty and although Forecast made a good save to prevent Di Santo, the striker got a second goal with the Spurs keeper given little chance with the shot that found the net.  The striker completed his hat-trick in the 81st minute when Troy Archibald-Henville brought him down in the box and he converted the spot-kick to give the experienced Pensioners team a win.

Played in weather featuring rain, sleet and hailstones, it was a tactical battle that saw Spurs do most of the attacking.  A 17th minute scramble involving Livermore and Hallfredsson in the area ended with the ball being played wide to Phil Ifil and his cross was knocked over by Andy Barcham.  The striker held the ball up well after 25 minutes to lay it on for Kieran McKenna to shoot and his shot was blocked, as was the follow-up by Jamie O’Hara.

Chelsea striker Younghusband put a shot wide before the referee too the players off the field of play until the hail and thunder-storm ended, returning a minute later to resume the action.  Rodriguez curled a Chelsea free-kick wide of the mark and Hallfredsson dragged his shot across goal and O’Hara struck a volley wide of the post.  Just before the hour, Lee Mills diverted a shot towards his own goal and Ben Alnwick got in the way to keep the ball out.

Play swung from end to end, with Hutchinson denying O’Hara, Rodriguez hitting a shot too high, O’Hara once more thwarted by the keeper, who then saved from sub Lee Barnard.  Five minutes from the end, sub Lee Barnard took an O’Hara cross, worked a yard and fired a shot on goal that Ma-Kalambay saved at point-blank range to keep the score-sheet blank.

Jiri Jarošik and Lassana Diarra both had full games, while Wayne Bridge played out his first 90 minutes since he broke his leg in February, but the a goal in each half gave the points to Tottenham.

Chelsea’s first opening of the game fell to Jarosik, but he blasted Morais’ low cross well over the top and soon after, Phil Younghusband did well to play in Mancienne, who shot wide. But it was Tottenham who went ahead just after the half hour, when a mistake by Elmer allowed Phil Ifil to run at Pettigrew, going past the defender easily before firing a powerful shot past Lenny Pidgeley.

Chelsea’s change of personnel and formation to 4-2-3-1, failed to improve their attacking options and with 20 minutes left, Spurs doubled the lead with another quality strike.  Lee Barnard turned Pettigrew, then slipped a pass sideways to Jackson who drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Diarra was Chelsea’s best player and almost sent Younghusband in on goal, but the forward couldn’t reach the through ball.   Despite a frantic Chelsea finish Spurs held out for a sound win to help their continue their winning early season form.

Chelsea’s Oliveira hit a 25 yard shot wide after ten minutes and when Joe Tillen found his brother Sam,  Radek Cerny saved easily, as the shot was mis-hit, although the Czech had to be on his toes to race out to deny Joe Tillen who tried to capitalise on Oliveira’s flick on just before the interval.

Following the break, Mark Yeates pulled a save out of Lenny Pidgeley at his near post, after Phil Ifil had worked the opening from the right wing.  Ten minutes after this effort, Paul O’Donoghue sent in a thumping header from a corner the Chelsea keeper produced the save of the night knocking the ball out from under the crossbar and then grabbing the ball on the floor before any Spurs player could react to it.

Goran Bunjevcevic, almost opened the scoring, but he volleyed well over and just as the hour passed, Rodrigo Defendi pulled back Joe Tillen as he broke through.  As the last defender he would have to leave the field, but it was O’Donoghue who was sent-off and it was double relief when Filipe Morais bent his free-kick past the wall and against the upright.

Making the most of their advantage, Chelsea wide-man Oliveira knocked over a deep cross that Joe Tillen drove across goal and Hollands hit a dipping shot over the top with 20 minutes left.  Watt headed powerfully at goal from a corner, but Cerny was right behind it and Spurs almost stole the result with a far-post free-kick that just missed contact from two stretching legs.

Spurs had already had two good efforts from Mark Gower before Simon Davies drove a shot at goal and Rhys Evans pushed it out for Neale Fenn to net the rebound with 13 minutes on the clock.  However, it only took the Pensioners two minutes to equalise with Rati Aleksidze scoring direct from a 30 yard free-kick.

Although the chances were there for Spurs, Yannick Kamanan, Dave McEwen, Davies and Matthew Etherington all failed to find the net, leaving Leon Knight to pop up in the 88th minute to win the match for the West Londoners.

Spurs scored shortly after kick off when Jamie Clapham picked off a pass and played Neale Fenn through, being fouled once he entered the penalty area.  Fenn got up to convert the penalty, but this brought a strong response from Chelsea, who scored two of their few chances to turn around ahead.  Kevin Maher and Rory Allen worked together to create a chance for Garry brady, but he shot wide.

Coming out for the second half, Spurs controlled the game, with Allen and Danny Hill going close before Fenn equalising from the penalty spot after McVeigh had forced a handball.  A goal against the run of play restored Chelsea’s lead, but Fenn completed his hat-trick with a couple of minutes of the match remaining, capitalising on a defensive mistake to run through and slot the ball past the keeper.

With Chelsea sitting in third place in the Football Combination table, it was a good performance to see them off with a 2-1 home win.

Paul Stewart gave Tottenham the lead halfway through the first half, taking the ball around the Blues’ keeper after being put through by a very good pass from Paul Allen.  However, he was brought down by the goalie for a penalty, which the Spurs striker took, only to see it saved, but was alert enough to reach the loose ball and dink it into the net over the prone goalkeeper.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Chelsea had more attacking intent after the restart, but another penalty put Tottenham 2-0 ahead, when Justin Edinburgh’s free-kick was handled by the Chelsea centre-half in the box, allowing Paul Stewart to make no mistake this time, side-footing the ball home.  Three minutes later, Chelsea grabbed what was to turn out to only be a consolation.

Chelsea went ahead in what was a close match, but Ian Crook and Terry Gibson combined to set up Mark Falco’s goal that evened up the score before half-time.  An early second half goal was the only one of the second half and was enough for the Pensioners to win the game.

Spurs pushed hard towards the Chelsea goal in the opening 20 minutes, but could not make the pressure count.  Chelsea keeper Bob Iles saved well from Garry Brooke on two occasions and Giorgio Mazzon went close, but in the 36th minute Gary Johnson scored for Chelsea against the run of play, knocking the ball home after it had come out off the goal-post.  Mark Falco struck the upright with a second half shot, but that was as close as Spurs came to scoring and with the last kick of the game, John Sparrow rifled home a long-range effort to make the final score 2-0.

Two spectacular first half goals from Lee had given Spurs the advantage at half-time, but Chelsea battled back to level at 2-2, leaving Lee to settle the match with his third goal in the 73rd minute.

Spurs were foiled by former England goalkeeper Peter Bonetti, who was in top form and a penalty awarded for handball was saved by the Chelsea keeper even though Joe Kinnear took the spot-kick twice.

Tommy Langley gave Chelsea’s enterprising start a goal early on and then, from a narrow angle, Ian Britton made it 2-0. Spurs did go close before the award of the penalty, but they had to wait until the second half for John Margerrison to take Chris McGrath’s diagonal ball and beat two defenders to the ball before beating Bonetti.

With Spurs back in the game, they nearly pulled level when McGrath struck the post, but Tottenham were hit on the counter-attack and John Sissons scored to put the game beyond Tottenham’s reach.

Gary Mabee’s pass gave Jimmy Neighbour the simple task of tapping home the opening goal, with Ray Clarke steering the ball into the net from close range to double the lead.

Clarke then got the third Tottenham goal, with his shot going in off Chelsea keeper Peter Bonetti and the Spurs striker almost completed his hat-trick when Mike Dillon headed the ball into the goalmouth, but Clarke was just unable to apply the finishing touch.

Chelsea went close to getting a goal back when Garry Stanley hit the post and then went close from the rebound. However, Bonetti had to be alert to save from Dillon, but could do nothing to stop Phil Holder hitting a stunning drive to make it 4-0 halfway through the second half.

A good performance in which Spurs were sharper and smarter than the Pensioners, but they could not find a finish to their good build-up play, leaving the game goal-less at the half-time whistle.  It was not for the want of trying, with Graeme Souness going close and then striking the angle with a rasping 35 yard shot, with Roy Woolcott going close from David Jenkins corner.

Spurs took the lead when Woolcott finished a good move involving Jenkins’ right wing cross minutes after half time at the far post.   Then, when John Cutbush hit the bar with a shot, Jimmy Pearce hooked the ball back into the danger zone and Woolcott forced the ball over the line from close range.

Losing Joe Kinnear with an ankle injury, Tottenham had to reshuffle with Ray Clarke coming on in his place. While the team struggled to find the rhythm they had before the substitution, Cutbush put a header wide from another Jenkins cross and Spurs saw out the game to return to winning ways.

An outstanding display by Spurs Reserves – the best of the season according to Reserve Team manager Eddie Baily – saw them outclass Chelsea’s reserves to go 14 games without defeat.

Ray Clarke crossed in for Jimmy Neighbour to in off the crossbar to make it 1-0 and when David Jenkins crossed, Neighbour was on the spot again, this time volleying in his second goal.

Chelsea got a goal back through Dave Smethurst before half-time, when the Spurs defence let him in, but soon after the restart, Phil Holder fired a shot into the top corner from 18 yards out to make it 3-1.  Chelsea got another Smethurst goal back before Ray Clarke flicked on with his head for Holder to volley in from 16 yards out in the closing stages of the game.
