Spurs won 1-0 against Chesterfield at White Hart Lane to stay top of the Second Division.

Alf Ramsey’s penalty, fired high into the net, was a result of Sonny Walters being fouled by Fred Capel in the 27th minute.  The game was not a thrilling one but Chesterfield keeper Ray Middleton performed well to save from Medley, Duquemin, Burgess and Walters to keep the score-line respectable.

Spurs v Chesterfield Friendly Match Reports

.
24.07.1985 Friendly      Away     Won     4-2.

This pre-season warm-up saw Spurs go ahead when Graham Roberts powered home a header from John Chiedozie’s corner, but Spurs had to wait until the second half for their second goal.  Chiedozie and Galvin linked on the right wing and the ball was slipped into the box for Chris Waddle to turn his marker and then slide the ball under the keeper.

Waddle’s second was even better, as he received a short free-kick just inside the Chesterfield half and ran forward, shaping as to go left and then right to the defender in front of him as he ran down the middle before thumping a right foot shot that flew across the keeper from the right of centre, just inside the penalty area.

The home side got back into the game, when a low cross from the right wing found Mick Henderson just inside the right hand corner of the box and he came inside a defender to shoot to Ray Clemence’s left to make it 3-1.  A high ball into the inside left channel saw a defender get it all wrong and the ball dropped for Chiedozie, who hit a shot at goal that took a heavy deflection off a defender to find the net.

Chesterfield had the last word, with Ernie Moss scoring with a far post header from a cross from the right to narrow the final score-line to 4-2.
