The first permanent signing of Antonio Conte’s reign as Spurs manager was a player who was little known to Tottenham fans – Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Aged 24 at the time of joining Tottenham, Bentancur came with a lot of experience for one so young.  As a youngster he played for Lucerna, the youth team of local club Club Artesano, eventually making their first team.  It was while playing for Artesano that a coach from Boca spotted him and he was brought through the youth system at Argentine side Boca Juniors.  His progress into the first XI impressed Juventus to the extent that when the Italian club allowed Carlos Tevez to return to Boca, they took Bentancur as one of the five players they had an option on signing as part of the deal.  Arriving in Italy in April 2017, Rodrigo underwent a medical and a deal for five years was agreed as from the start of the 2017-2018 season.

He was integrated into the Juventus team that was riding high in Serie A at the time, blending into the side that won nine straight championships, with three coming during his time at Juve.  There were also three domestic cup wins, while he gained experience of the Champions League, being a regular starter … once against Spurs in Turin in 2018.

With Conte’s extensive knowledge of the Italian soccer scene, he charged Director of Football Fabio Paratici to raid Serie a and he brought back a double deal from Juventus in January 2022.  Young winger Dejan Kulusevski was signed on loan with an option to sign permanently, while Bentancur was a straightforward move to Tottenham, with six months of his Juve contract left and not being part of Massimiliano Allegri’s plans, which could cost up to £21.5 million.

Rodrigo graduated from the successful Uruguay Youth team that won the Under-20 South American Championship in 2017 into the national team the same year and marked his move to Spurs with his first goal for his country the very next day.  He was in the Uruguay side in the 2018 World Cup finals and will be back for the 2022 finals in Qatar in the winter.

Possessing a calmness on the ball in any area of the pitch and a smooth passing style that keeps the ball moving.  He has the ability to spot through balls to the forwards and even join up with the attack which has provided Tottenham with a different dimension in midfield.  Paired well with either Oliver Skipp or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during his first season, his adaptation to the Premier League’s demands has been seamless and he looks like a player who will be a keystone in the development of the side under Conte.
