Ellis CROMPTON
Forward 1910-1912
Full name : – George Ellis Crompton
Born on 17th July 1886 in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, England.
Height : 1.75m (5′ 8″)
Weight : 72.58 kg (11st 7lbs)
Signed from Blackburn Rovers as cover for the injured centre forward Percy Humphreys, Ellis Crompton wasn’t at Spurs for long.
Playing local football, Ellis was spotted and signed by Blackburn from Padiham, a club near Burnley. As a 20 year old he broke into the team and although not a regular, he had a good return of 20 goals in 35 matches in all competitions, but his move to Spurs in 1910 was not so successful. His only goal for the club in 11 matches came in a match against Oldham Athletic, which was abandoned due to heavy fog descending on White Hart Lane at half-time, so it was erased from the records. He suffered an injury that allowed Humphreys to regain his place in the side.
Tottenham let the striker leave at the end of the 1911-12 season and he signed for Exeter City, amid rumours that the training methods that were employed at Tottenham did not suit him. Crompton spent a year at St. James Park, having been top scorer for the club in 1912-1913 and he returned to the Grecians in 1921 after leaving for an eight year spell at Bristol Rovers, where he played in the Southern League and Division Three either side of World War I as a centre-half. There was another season’s loan at Rovers for the 1922-1923 campaign, but in 1926 he accepted the position of player-coach at Bideford Town and then a similar position at Llanelli and Barry Town.
After leaving the game, he took up running a pub in Barnstaple, Devon.
Ellis Crompton died on 17th May 1953 in Barnstaple, Devon, England.
