Republic of Ireland international right back Matt Doherty served Wolverhampton Wanderers in three divisions of the football pyramid before leaving in August 2020 to join Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of £15 million

Born in a town to the north of Dublin, Doherty started his football playing with his hometown club Swords Celtic, before moving up to play for Dublin clubs Home Farm and Belvedere.  In 2009, Bohemians signed the defender and having impressed Wolves in a friendly against them the following year, he was signed for £75,000 without even playing a senior competitive match for Bohs.

As a raw right back, he made half a dozen appearances for the first team at Molineux before he was loaned to Hibernian of the Scottish Premier League.  It wasn’t the happiest of times at the club and his 17 appearances included the 2012 Scottish FA Cup final, where they were on the wrong end of a 5-1 gubbing by close neighbours Heart of Midlothian.

Once back with Wolves, Doherty was again loaned, this time to Bury in League One, for three months.  As part of a young back four, his performances earned praise from his manager Kevin Blackwell, but the club’s perilous financial situation meant that he could not be retained beyond the loan period and he went straight into the Wolves side on his return, but couldn’t prevent the club sliding into a second successive relegation to League One.  When Dean Saunders left as manager, Kenny Jackett took over and put his faith in Doherty, as they bounced straight back into the Championship.

Established as the club’s right back, Matt developed his marauding attacking style, as he created chances up the wing and also got a few goals to boot.  After being part of the Wolves squad that won the Championship title in 2017-18 that secured a return to the Premier League after six years, he won his first Republic of Ireland cap, quickly becoming a first pick for the country’s national team.

Despite having a contract until 2023, it was surprising that Wolves were willing to let him leave and with Kyle Walker-Peters on his way to Southampton and Serge Aurier touted with a departure in the summer 2020 transfer window, his arrival was most welcome.  Taking a little time to settle in to a new way of playing, his performances soon picked up and he will be an integral member of Mourinho’s Tottenham squad.
