A career that has shuttled between England and Italy has produced a goalkeeper with a growing reputation and one who is not the norm !

A confident goalie, Pierluigi Gollini signed for Spurs, initially on loan from Atalanta with a view to a permanent deal and initially featured in the games Spurs were involved in playing the Europa Conference tournament.  Having had a wide experience in the game at 26, he has alternative interests, having released a rap record in Italy !

Originally with Fiorentina as a youngster, Pierluigi was at the Manchester United youth system from 2012, he did not enjoy the strict regime that Alex Ferguson had in place and failing to break into the first team squad, he returned to Italy to sign for Verona.  Spent two seasons there and once he broke into the first team, he held a place in the side for the majority of 2015-2016.

This brought him to the attention of Aston Villa and he signed to play 20 matches in their Championship season of 2016-2017, but was not kept on.  After leaving Villa, Gollini released a rap record entitled “Rapper coi Guanti” (“Rapper with gloves”) under the name of Gollorius, with profits from the song going to charity.  He had initially moved to Atalanta on loan, making just a dozen appearances in his two seasons with the club, but showed enough ability for them to make the deal permanent for an undisclosed fee.

Initially used as a back up for their existing keeper, Pierluigi became first choice and played 100 games for the Serie A club, who reached the Coppa Italia final (losing 0-2 to SS Lazio) and qualified for the Champions League after finishing third two seasons running, reaching the last 16 in 2020-2021.

An athletic keeper who is not afraid to come for crosses, he can play as a sweeper-keeper, which replicates the style of Hugo Lloris.  Spurs Director of Football Fabio Paratici knew Gollini well from his time in Italy and agreed a loan deal with the option of a permanent deal for £12.9 million as he was ear-marked as the eventual successor to Lloris between the Tottenham sticks.  His initial matches for Spurs saw him beaten as the team was adjusting to new manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s ideas, but he was unlucky to be beaten by some spectacular shots. However, he made an important save in penalty shoot-out of the League Cup tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers to see Spurs through to the Fourth round after the match had finished 2-2.

Given few games to show what he was capable of and with a change of manager, Pierluigi was unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but he was popular amongst the squad.  Outside of his playing duties, he even recorded a video for one of his raps on the roof of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With rumours that SS Lazio were keen on signing Gollini as their first choice keeper, he returned to Atalanta at the end of the season to continue his career back in Italy, where he went out on loan straight away to Fiorentina.
