George JEFFREY
Forward 1936-1939
Full name : – George Jeffrey
Born on 15th August 1916 in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Height : 1.7m (5′ 7″)
Weight : 65.7 kg (10st 5lbs)
Brought to Spurs as a 20 year old from his local Wishaw Juniors club close to his home town of Motherwell in Scotland, where he worked as a carpenter, George Jeffrey made an immediate impact when he got his Spurs debut.
A talented inside-forward playing in Scottish Junior football, Spurs signed Jeffrey in late 1936, but he spent his early days at the club in the reserves, making his debut against Corinthians shortly after arriving. Having to wait nearly a year for his call-up to the first team, it was a home match against Plymouth Argyle that saw Jeffrey make his debut for Tottenham and it was his goal that ensured Spurs took the points with the third in a 3-2 Second Division win.
Quick footed, he was good with the ball at his feet, scoring 11 times in 56 London Combination matches, with five more goals coming in games for the Reserves and the ‘A’ Team. Unable to make the breakthrough into the first team on a regular basis, Spurs allowed him to leave and he signed for Motherwell in May 1939, but with World War II being declared, George signed up to serve in the Gordon Highlanders.
Sent to the continent, he saw action and was involved in the Battle of Crete, where he sustained wounds to his shoulder and leg, being taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans before his condition allowed him to return home. When he made a full recovery, he played for Dumbarton in some war-time matches and also was a war-time guest for Aberdeen and Millwall before moving around Scottish clubs following the end of hostilities, which allowed the resumption of league football.
Having lost a large section of his career to the war, Jeffrey ran a successful business in Hamilton after his playing days ended.
George Jeffrey died in 1979 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
