Tottenham’s first signing of a busy 2022 summer transfer window saw Ivan Perisic arrive on a free transfer from Internazionale as Antonio Conte added some top level experience to the squad.

33 years old when he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Perisic came with a glittering CV with titles, cup wins and an appearance in the 2018 World Cup Final on it.  For him, it all started in the youth ranks of Hadjuk Split, where he spent six years before lots of clubs (PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Anderlecht, Hertha Berlin and Hamburg) showed an interest in signing him as a 17 year old.  Split made a big money offer of a contract to keep him, but Ivan and his family opted to take up Sochaux’s offer, with manager Alain Perrin flying to meet him and staying in Split until he completed the deal two days later.  While successful in the youth team, he failed to make the first team and after two years, he looked to move on, with rumours of wanting a transfer to Anderlecht and interest from Hertha before he eventually signed for Club Brugge.

In Belgium, Perisic had a good first season but in 2010-2011 he ended up as the League’s top scorer and Player of the Year.  The Croatian spent one more year at Brugge before Borussia Dortmund came up with an offer of 5 million Euros for the winger in a move that saw him win the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal (German Cup) in his first season with the Black and Yellows. IN his second season, his opportunities to play became fewer as manager Jurgen Klopp favoured other players and when Perisic mentioned it in an interview in his home country, Klopp called his actions childish.  There was only one way that this was going to end and his departure to Wolfsburg earned Dortmund a 3 million Euro profit, giving him a new start with a new club.

The winger made an impact in a Wolfsburg helping the team to a second place Bundesliga finish in 2014-2015, giving the club the opportunity to play in the Champions League and in May of that season, they won the German Cup for the first time in the club’s history, with a win over Perisic’s old club Dortmund.  His ability to provide goals with his dangerous crosses and to grab goals was spotted by Internazionale, who paid 11 million Euros in 2015 to take Ivan to Italy.  The move paid dividends as he had a productive first season with nine goals and six assists for Inter, which was bettered in the 2016-2017 season with 11 goals and ten assists.  Ivan signed a new contract at the start of the following season, tying him to Inter until June 2022.

Coming off the back of an impressive contribution to his nation’s progress to the World Cup final in Russia, where they lost out 2-4 to France, but he did score one of Croatia’s goal.  The 2017-2018 season saw the club qualify for the Champions League, with Perisic’s first game in the competition ironically a 2-1 home win over Tottenham in September 2018.  It was at the start of 2019 that a move to Arsenal was all but done before Inter prevented him leaving.

Antonio Conte was appointed as the new manager of Inter over the summer of 2019 and struggling to adjust to the Italian’s playing system Perisic moved to Bayern Munich on loan.  Troubled with a broken ankle and the start of the Covid pandemic, his season was disrupted, but on football’s resumption, he starred in wins in the German Cup final and in the Champions League final to round off a successful season.  It was therefore, a little surprising that Bayern did not take up the option to sign him on a permanent basis, so he returned to Inter, where a move from winger to wing-back saw him fit into Conte’s system more effectively. So much so that the Nerrazzuri too the Serie A title for the first time in ten years, thus ending Juventus’ run of nine straight championships.  In his final season in Milan, Inter won the Coppa Italia and Ivan scored two of the goals in the 4-2 extra time victory against Juventus.

With his Internazionale contract expired, Perisic became a free agent and with Conte installed as Spurs manager now, he made the player his first signing of a 2022 summer transfer window that saw him restructure the squad at the club ahead of a challenge on four fronts in the 2022-2023 season.
