Defender Cristian Romero started his career in 2014 in the youth system at his home town club Belgrano, who he went on to play 16 times for before moving to Europe when he was bought by Genoa in July 2018. He was only at Italy’s oldest club for a year before Juventus snapped him up for 26 million Euros, but the centre half stayed with Genoa on loan for the 2019-2020 season, being put out on a two-year loan the following season at Atalanta.
Building a reputation as a tough tackling defender who was good in the air, but happy to bring the ball out of defence with his feet, interest in his services was attracted following his “Best defender in Serie A of 2020-2021” award. Spurs made no secret of their desire to sign him and Director of Football Fabio Paratici went to lengthy discussions with Atalanta, who had just made his transfer from Juventus permanent a year early, to bring him to Tottenham, initially on loan for the 2021-2022 season with an option to make the deal permanent for £46.7 million. It was reported that Romero said Argentina team-mate Giovani Lo Celso was instrumental in persuading him to come to Tottenham.
Romero went off to play for Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers and the Copa America, having represented his country at Under-20 and Under-23 levels. His goal against Colombia in a World Cup qualifying game came after only 130 seconds, becoming the quickest scored in professional football in is homeland. While he didn’t play all of the games in the Copa America finals, he did start the final itself, in which Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 and he was selected for the Team of the Tournament.
Arriving with an injury and not 100% match fit added to Covid-19 isolations after playing for Argentina, Cristian took a while to get up to speed, but settled into the middle of defence, showing his strengths of anticipation and aerial dominance.
