Carl Taylor was a right winger, turned midfielder who was brought to Tottenham from Bristol at the age of 13.
Starting his footballing days at Henbury Comprehensive School and playing for locals sides Patchway North End, Kendall Juniors and Filton, Carl originally began on the right wing, but was moved into a midfield position when he was 12 that changed the direction of his future. Picked for Bristol Schools Under-13s, Taylor progressed through the U14, U15 and U16 age groups also making the County side of Avon Schools. From there it was being selected for the South-West Counties regional teams and being invited through to the final trials for England Schoolboys at Under-15 and Under-19 levels. Playing in schoolboy matches in the Bristol area brought him into oppositions with both Gary Mabbutt (who then joined Bristol Rovers) and Gary’s brother Kevin, who went on to play for Bristol City.
While playing in the Bristol Schools and South-West Counties teams, Carl was spotted by Tottenham’s Chief Scout Charlie Faulkner, who had been watching him for several months before signing him for Spurs. So, it was at 13 that Carl began coming to London and he signed on schoolboy terms in 1974. Attending training sessions at the club every school holiday and at weekends, Staying in digs in Edmonton, shared with Martin Robinson, Chris Jones, Micky Hazard and Neil McNab, Taylor played regularly in the Junior and Youth teams in the South-East Counties side managed by Peter Shreeves and coached by Ron Henry at the time. The side contained Chris Hughton, Paul Miller, Mark Kendall, Micky Hazard and Patsy Kavanagh.
When Tottenham released Taylor, he signed for Orient for the 1977-1978 season on 3-month rolling contracts, making the South-East Counties Youth team and stepping up into the Reserve team, who played in the Football Combination. Having spent a season at Brisbane Road, Carl moved on to Swindon Town, where he spent the following season as a non-contract player featuring in the Under-19 and Reserve sides.
Leaving the County Ground, Taylor went on to play in the Western League for Bath City and Welton Rovers.
Working during this time and beyond his footballing days, Carl was employed by British Telecom as a Service Manager and then in sales, before his retirement.
Although there was not a further contract for him at Tottenham at the time, Carl really enjoyed his time with the club and still follows Tottenham’s fortunes, always looking for their results first.
