Guglielmo VICARIO
Goalkeeper 2023-
Full name : – Guglielmo Vicario
Born on 7th October 1996 in Udine, Italy.
Height : 1.94 m (6′ 4″)
Weight : kg (st lbs)
Tottenham signed this highly regarded keeper as the replacement for Hugo Lloris, who left the club after serving them for eleven years. Guglielmo Vicario was a goalie who a number of clubs looked at, including Internazionale, but it was Spurs who moved quickly to make him their second signing of the summer of 2023 at the cost of £16.4 million.
Tall and athletic, he was highlighted in a match against AS Roma when he made a triple save showing his reflexes and ability to recover, even though it could not prevent Empoli losing the match.
It was with his local club Udinese that Guglielmo began his career, initially going out on loan to Serie C side Fontanafredda, where he played 30 times in season 2014-2015 and although he did not appear for Udinese, he moved in the summer of 2015 to Venezia. Having just been relegated to the fourth level of football in Italy, Vicario’s first season helped them regain a place in the third tier. Making 77 appearances in his four years at Venezia, he was signed on a five year deal by Cagliari, going straight out on loan to Perugia playing 37 times on a season-long loan. Returned to Sardinia, spending the 2020-2021 season with Cagliari, but only made seven appearances before he went on loan once more, this time to Empoli, where he starred 39 times in Serie A, with The Blues exercising their option to buy him in June 2022.
His ability was noted as he was a key factor in keeping the club in the top division and he received a call-up to the Italian national squad for Nations League matches that saw him win a bronze medal as Italy took third place in the competition. With Spurs on the look out for goalkeepers, he was identified as the French captain’s successor and came to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a big money move, much to the chagrin of clubs in his homeland, who rued the opportunity to sign him that slipped through their fingers.
