With Tottenham looking for a back-up striker for Harry Kane and also one to play up with him on occasion, they dipped into the transfer market after the Covid-19 interrupted season in October 2020 to bring Carlos Vinicius to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium initially on loan for a season, with the option to make the move permanent the following summer.
Tall and strong, the Brazilian had started his fledgling career as a central defender in his youth teams (including Goias, Santos, Desportivo Brasil and Palmeiras), before moving from back to front as a defensive midfielder for his first senior club Caldense and then as an attacking midfielder after he had moved to Gremio Anapolis. It was only when he was loaned to Portuguese club Real Sport Clube that he moved into the forward line and started scoring.
His goals brought him to the attention of SSC Napoli, who signed him from his Brazilian club for 4 million Euros in January 2018. Carlos was played in pre-season friendlies when he joined up with the club in the summer of that year, but was immediately shipped out on a season long loan to Rio Ave, back in Portugal. Scored a goal almost every other game in the second tier of Portuguese football and returned to Napoli at the turn of the year, but was not given the chance to play for the Italian club before being loaned out again, this time to AS Monaco in January 2019. In the Principality he struggled a little, scoring only twice in 16 games, but helped keep the club in Ligue 1.
In the summer of 2019, Napoli decided to cash in on the striker and turned a neat profit, moving him on to Benfica for 17 million Euros. In the 2019-20 season, he helped the club to the Portuguese Super Cup and ended the season as the top goal-scorer in the Primera Liga. His height made him a danger at set-pieces, but his play is characterised by more than just being a target for long, high balls. He has a good left foot and his good movement gets him into goal-scoring positions, where all good scorers need to be. Not one to take pot-shots at goal, Vinicius seems to wait until he is in a good space to shoot and then more often than not gets his efforts on target.
With manager Jose Mourinho liking a big man up front, he provides Spurs with an option that they have been missing for a while and his transition into the team will perhaps gives opposition sides more to think about.
