Full name : – Ralph Wetton
Height : 1.80 m (5′ 11″)
Weight : 68.04kg (10st 10lbs)
Started his career as an inside forward and was moved to wing half, playing for Dartford and Cheshunt before signing for Spurs as an amateur in May 1949, continuing playing for Cheshunt until signed professional with Tottenham in August 1950.
Ralph’s first season with Spurs saw him playing in the A team with his brother Albert also in the side. However, Albert didn’t make the breakthrough to the first team, but moved on to have a good career with Brighton & Hove Albion and Crewe Alexandra.
Made his Spurs debut v Aston Villa at WHL in October 1951 and went on to make 45 Spurs appearances in the League and one in an FA Cup match, mainly as a stand-in when Bill Nicholson or Ron Burgess were injured. Despite his creative style of play, the comparison with those two legendary wing-halves restricted his playing time, but during his stay at White Hart Lane, Ralph also made 67 apps in the reserve and A Teams.
When Tottenham bought Danny Blanchflower, Ralph left Spurs in June 1955 to join Plymouth Argyle (where he was sent off on his home debut) making 36 League apps with one goal before signing for Aldershot in November 1956. In 18 months there he made 49 league appearances with one goal.
Wetton then spent a short time at Eynesbury Rovers before acting as player/manager at Harlow Town and Cheshunt. He was a founder member of the Brimsdown Rovers club.
He passed away four days before his 90th birthday in 2017 in the North Middlesex Hospital, not far from White Hart Lane.
