Tony Marchi added a second, with David Wilson and Alan Gilzean equalising for the Scottish XI, before they stepped up a gear and in the last quarter of an hour went on a scoring spree to leave the score 6-2 to the opposition, thanks to Neil Martin’s brace and further goals from Gilzean and Willie Wallace. 16.11.1959 | Torpedo Moscow (Russia) Friendly Home Won 3-2
Crack Russian team Torpedo Moscow came to Britain on a tour and met Spurs at a foggy White Hart Lane. Lev Yashin appeared as a guest in goal for Torpedo, but he was unable to stop Spurs running out 3-2 winners. Bobby Smith was industrious and was warned by the local referee about his robust hassling of Yashin, who held the ball for a long time before releasing it and Smith was trying to hurry him up. Spurs were a goal up in five minutes from Dave Mackay, as his shot deflected off Alexander Medakenin to confuse Yashin and in the 13th minute, Bobby Smith almost doubled the lead, but his header dropped into the keeper’s arms off the post. Eight minutes later, Smith was rewarded with a goal when he got on the end of Terry Medwin’s header from Mackay’s free kick and it was left to the striker to shoot high into the net to make it 2-0. A minute later, Torpedo pulled a goal back thanks to Slava Metreveli’s pass providing the opening for Valentin Ivanov to shoot past Bill Brown. Maurice Norman, Mackay and Dave Dunmore all combined to produce a opportunity for John White to finish and make it 3-1 after just 26 minutes. As expected the Muscovites came back into the game in the second half and ten minutes in, Bill Brown and Dave Mackay both did their utmost to keep the goal protected as they stopped the ball on the line and then Peter Baker had to be quick to keep out a Metreveli effort. However, with ten minutes left, Metreveli played in Eyev to score the second Torpedo goal. Teams : |

Johnny Brooks hit the Spurs goal, but it was not enough to stop a determined Russian team winning out. Teams : |

01.06.1959 | Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) Friendly Away Won 2-1
Tottenham moved onto the warmer city of Kiev to play a match against Dynamo Kiev in front of a 60,000 crowd. Spurs had trained in the Kruschev stadium on three mornings approaching the game, but the ground had a dusty and bumpy pitch that made play difficult, although Spurs managed to put their game together and Johnny Brooks finished off a move to make it 1-0 after 21 minutes, hooking home a cross from Terry Medwin. However, Oleh Bazilichev got Kiev level, cutting in from the right to fire a shot into the top corner and it was 15 minutes from the end of the game when Tottenham sealed a 2-1 win when Maurice Norman and Peter Baker linked well on the right side of the pitch to provide the ball for Dave Mackay. The midfielder moved it on to Eddie Clayton and his pass put David Dunmore one on one with the Kiev full-back, taking him on and slipping the ball inside for Brooks to slide it past the keeper for his second of the game. 27.05.1959 | Torpedo Moscow (Russia) Friendly Away Won 1-0
Spurs travelled to Russia for a friendly against Torpedo Moscow and it took only five minutes before Terry Medwin had given Tottenham the lead. Danny Blanchflower’s free-kick found Medwin and his shot flew in off a Torpedo defender. The remainder of the first half saw Spurs dominate and they were unlucky to turn around with just the one goal advantage. Johnny Brooks hit a screamer of a shot that the Russian keeper did well to keep out. As Torpedo pressed in the second half, Spurs had to defend strongly and they restricted Hollowbread to just three shots to save, but things hotted up outfield and some skirmishes littered the play. However, Constantin powerfully headed past Hollowbread in the Tottenham goal to pull a goal back five minutes later and with 66 minutes on the clock, Eftimie set the same player up for the Romanian’s second goal. Spurs travelled to Holland to play a Rotterdam Select XI and won 4-1 at the Sparta Rotterdam stadium 4-1, thanks to goals from Terry Medwin, Johnny Brooks, Bobby Smith and Tommy Harmer. The match was in aid of the city’s Children’s hospital and coincided with a visit to Rotterdam by the Queen. It was played in pouring rain, but in a good spirit. Terry Medwin had driven home a first half goal to give Spurs the lead, then into the second period, Medwin turned provider, playing a short pass to Johnny Brooks to shoot home. Tommy Harmer scored a rare header – diving in to head like a bullet past the keeper and Bobby Smith scored Tottenham’s fourth with a shot from 25 yards out. A strong selection from Sparta, Feyenoord, VVV Venlo and Excelsior struggled as Tottenham’s slick passing on a fast pitch left them stretched, but they did pull a goal back towards the end, with Johnny Hills unfortunately diverting the ball past Ted Ditchburn. Teams : NOTE : – The team stayed at the Atlantic Hotel and were able to watch Man U v Fulham FA Cup replay on TV. They also took a river cruise to get a close up of royal yacht Britannia. 01.06.1957. | Glasgow Celtic Vancouver Friendly Won 6-3
Spurs met Glasgow Celtic for the second time on this tour and were big winners in this friendly played in the Empire Stadium, Vancouver. Maybe the biggest winner was the fan who hurdled the pitch-side barrier to grab the ball after an errant shot who then made off with it ! Tottenham were off to a flying start with Bobby Smith scoring after two minutes and that was added to by Johnny Brooks’ goal on 23 minutes, but in between Eric Smith drove a shot between Reynolds’ legs and then the Celts equalised before half-time when Willie Fernie converted a penalty. The second half was a more one-sided affair with Tottenham scoring four quick goals from Brooks, Smith, Danny Blanchflower and Alfie Stokes. The Scottish side scored the final goal of the game when Billy McPhail headed home Neil Mochan’s corner, but it wasn’t enough on the day to stop Spurs running out 6-3 victors. Teams : |

03.12.1956 | Red Banner (MTK) (Hungary) Friendly Home Won 7-1
Hungarian side Red Banner came to White Hart Lane to play a friendly under floodlights, with Spurs showing their superiority in winning 7-1. Spurs were without five players through injury and international call-ups, but their play was more effective than the technical football played by the visitors, but without a cutting edge. Terry Medwin scored the opening goal when Duquemin went wide to feed Medwin inside him and he despatched the ball left footed past the keeper. It was 2-0 fifteen minutes later, with George Robb taking the ball around a defender and then the goalkeeper to walk the ball in and eight minutes further into the game, Stokes received a pass from Harmer to score. Duquemin added another two minutes after the third scoring from a left wing cross from close range, but Palatos pulled one goal back ten minutes before the break after a neat passing movement. The introduction of two Red Banner substitutes during the first half had caused a little confusion, with the away team having 12 players on the pitch at one point ! Tottenham’s forward movement with their moves outshone the passing game of the Hungarians, with Blanchflower’s 25 yard drive in the 52nd minute restoring the four goal margin, with Stokes putting Spurs further ahead fifteen minutes after that with him scoring from Harmer’s pass. This left Stokes to complete his hat-trick in the 70th minute when he was set up by a pass from Len Duquemin. Teams : |

A slow start to the game at Easter Road saw neither side trouble the keepers, but in the 22nd minute, Turnbull brought a fine save from Ted Ditchburn from a free-kick. It was a free-kick in the 39th minute from Terry Dyson that forced the Hibs keeper to save with Danny Blanchflower on hand to put the ball past him as it fell at his feet. The lead lasted only a short time, as Hibs earned a penalty that was converted, only for Tottenham to again the advantage right on half-time, with Bobby Smith the scorer taking the ball around the goalkeeper before putting the ball into an empty goal. After the break, both sides piled the ball into the goalmouths and the ball managed to avoid going in until a long ball forward got to Smith, who turned to smash home his second of the match via a deflection off a defender. Tottenham were the stronger side in the latter stages, as Smith created an opportunity for Dyson with a good pass to send him through and in the final minute, Tommy Harmer scored to make the finals score 5-1 to Spurs.
