04.02.1933 Division 2     Home     Won     4-3

A comeback from 3-1 down gave Spurs both Division Two points as they recovered to win in the last forty minutes of the match.

Bestall had been the best player on the pitch in the first half showing great mastery of the football on a slippery pitch, but it was George Hunt who gave Tottenham a 35th minute lead with a thumping header to Willie Davies’ cross.  Grimsby turned the game on it’s head within six minutes as goals from Craven and Glover put them ahead and soon after the restart, Jennings made it 3-1.

With forty minutes to play, it was Eugene O’Callaghan, Willie Evans and George Hunt who played some lovely football and with goals coming from Evans with two and O’Callaghan grabbing the other one, it was a turnaround that left Grimsby empty-handed.  In between Evans’ two goals, he stepped up to take a penalty, but hit it straight at Read, the Mariners’ keeper.

Spurs v Grimsby Town Match Reports

20.01.2025 FA Youth Cup Fourth Round     Away     Won     5-3 (after extra time; Score 3-3 at 90 mins)

Having looked comfortable to progress to the Fifth Round at 3-1 with seven minutes remaining in the second half, Tottenham’s Under-19s were taken to extra-time by Grimsby Town, with Spurs having to win the game for a second time to eventually record a 5-3 victory.

With a lenient referee allowing the home team’s physical approach to impose the Mariners on Tottenham, it was the clinical play that eventually won the tie for Spurs.  Kicking off, it was Spurs who began controlling the match with a high press and good passing, but Samual Archer had to be alert to come out of his area to head away a long through ball with eight minutes gone.  Ten minutes into the game, a ball inside by Harry Byrne to Luca Williams-Barnett brought a low save to the keeper’s left to keep out a low shot that would have crept inside the post.  A loose pass in the 18th minute presented Reiss Elliott-Parris the opportunity to take the ball into the box, past a defender and his left foot shot hit the base of the post, rebounding out to Williams-Barnett just inside the box and from 12 yards out he hit the bar.  Luca then pulled a save out of the Grimsby keeper with a volley after Tynan Thompson has dazzled down the left wing and then Spurs were denied a penalty when Elliott-Parris was knocked down in the box.

Tottenham’s press was keeping Grimsby penned back in their own half, with a defender appearing to handle in the box when Miracle Adewole’s cross popped up in the box, but Williams-Barnet hit a volley as the ball came down bringing another another good save at the keeper’s right hand post.  With some rustic and rugby-style defending to stop Williams-Barnett, the Mariners got through to half-time without conceding.

Williams-Barnett scuffed one shot wide and missed another low ball in from Adewole in the opening minutes of the second half, but a  neat piece of footwork in the box opened the way for a pass from Reiss Elliott-Parris to give Luca the chance to slide the ball in from the left of the goal three yards out.

Elijah Upson did well to race back to ease Brown off the ball when it looked as though he might be through on goal and the Gromsby keeper kept out a Elliott-Parris shot out, but when Giles got away on the right, he pulled the ball back square for Midwinter, who was just on as a sub, to power a shot past Archer at the near post.  Some late tackles by Grimsby brought a talking to by the referee and from one free-kick, Spurs played it short and then Tynan Thompson cut in from the left and struck a low right foot shot from 20 yards that beat the keeper at the foot of his right-hand post.

The pitch was cutting up form early on, making running with the ball difficult, so when Williams-Barnett tried to move inside with the ball he had to poke it on to Ellis Lehane, who took a touch to his right and then crashed a shot past the keeper from the edge of the box to put Spurs 3-1 up with seven minutes left.  Tottenham had to make a couple of changes before the goal with Hardy and Tye Hall picking up injuries, but it had not seemed to upset their pattern of play.  Having taken off Williams-Barnett with a couple of minutes left, a free-kick to the home side was won on the edge of the box with a header down for Giles to put the ball past Archer from six yards.

A very crude challenge on Lehane by Axcell riled the Spurs players and the Town centre-half got booked, but with nothing to lose, Grimsby poured forward and Adewole did well to clear a pull-back with men free behind him.  Five minutes into added time, Archer saved a shot, Upson headed the ball away and the ball was knocked back into the six yard box for Onoh to force the ball home with the last kick of the second half.

The fight-back had taken the tie to extra-time and on the restart, Tottenham tried to take the heat out of the game, with some good passing to keep possession.  While Grimsby still tried the physical approach, the length of the match and the state of the pitch was taking its toll and when Dexter Oliver floated a cross into the heart of the home penalty area, Jun’ai Byfield rose highest to head down past the goalie to make it 4-3 to Tottenham.

In the second period of extra time, Adewole did well to keep the ball in, sliding it down the right touchline for Oliver Salter, with the winger taking on his man before pulling a low ball back into the middle of the box.  Lehane controlled it with his back to goal and when it looked as though he might set up Dexter Oliver for a shot, he shifted the ball to his right from Ronny Moncur to run onto and fire home from 15 yards.  The referee tried to impose some authority by sending Williams-Barnett and Hardy to the dressing room from the bench as they had celebrated the goal along with all the other subs, although he had been letting the Spurs players be kicked from pillar to post.
