17.01.1996 | FA Cup Third Round Replay. Home Won 5-1
Spurs made easier work of the FA Cup Third Round replay against Hereford United at White Hart Lane than the first meeting eleven days before. Just after 20 minutes, Justin Edinburgh’s throw-in found Chris Armstrong, who pulled the ball back from the dead ball lien to the edge of the six-yard box, where Teddy Sheringham was in place to sweep the ball home. Darren Caskey’s deep corner from the left was met by Chris Armstrong’s head to make it 2-0. Two goals in four minutes at the start of the second half effectively settled the match, with Campbell’s high hoof into the box met by Ruel Fox’s volley that was saved, but Sheringham ran in the loose ball before Caskey’s right wing cross once more picked out Armstrong at the far post and his head did the rest. When Sheringham robbed a defender 20 yards out, he moved into the box from the right and slid the ball past the keeper to find the net at the near post for 5-0. The best goal of the night came from Hereford and the 25 yarder screamed into the net past Ian Walker from the boot of Gareth Stoker to find the keeper’s top left hand corner in the last minute and made the final score 5-1 to Spurs. 06.01.1996 | FA Cup Third Round Away Drew 1-1
Spurs had to dig deep in the Edgar Street mud to earn a replay against Hereford United in this FA Cup Third Round meeting. Hereford started on the offensive with John Brough volleying just wide and then Murray Fishlock had an effort blocked. Darren Caskey set up Chris Armstrong to have a shot, but his drive went wide, while Ronny Rosenthal Volleyed Ruel Fox’s cross just off target. It was Rosenthal who put Tottenham ahead in the driving rain, when Sheringham missed Armstrong’s cross and the Israeli reacted quickest to Darren Caskey’s shot and headed it past the keeper Chris MacKenzie in the 31st minute from close-in. Ian Walker was called upon to make a brave dive at the feet of Tony Pounder, but in the second half, a foul by Rosenthal and Caskey on Pounder, who was running in on goal, saw referee Riley point to the spot. Hereford captain Dean Smith adopted the responsibility and fired his shot over the bar. Spurs thought the luck may be on their side, but with exquisite symmetry, Hereford drew level with Brough heading a corner from Keith Downing past Ian Walker off the underside of the bar with 62 minutes gone. With the rain still falling, Steve White had the chance to win it for Hereford, but he could only scoop Nicky Cross’ ball in over the top, while Gary Mabbutt threw himself in the way of a shot from Cross to maintain a 1-1 score-line. Sheringham had the best effort of the second period for Tottenham in the 75th minute, with a shot on a breakaway, but the goalie saved it well and both sides had to settle for a replay. It was only eight minutes after that goal that Tottenham equalised when a high lob from Simon Webster caught goalkeeper Tommy Hughes off his line and as he tracked back to try and save it, the ball went through his hands and into the goal.
