A nice sunny day welcomed the faithful back to the temple of high drama and excitement also known as White Hart Lane. The first day of the season is one full of optimism and hope, but would it be unfounded and/or false ?? The choice of Leonhardsen on the left side of midfield was a surprising one. Firstly, because we all thought he was injured and secondly, because he seemed to have been ousted by Stephen Clemence. Still, it was good to see him playing again and alongside Sherwood and Anderton with Freund detailed to defensive midfield jankers. Up front Steffen Iversen was paired with Rebrov as expected and the back four virtually picked themselves. The selection of Sullivan was hardly unexpected either. So, things started off with Ipswich having to deal with a couple of Spurs raids and then the Spurs back line doing the same as the Blues made forays into the Spurs box. Iversen headed a corner from Anderton over, when Sol was well placed right behind him, then all of a sudden, a free-kick was awarded to Ipswich a few yards outside the box for a block by Sherwood. It looked harsh and that became even more evident when Venus’ drive caught a wicked deflection off the wall and flew past Sullivan. There was nothing he could do and 9 minutes into his debut he was looking at the ball in the back of the net. Anderton nearly got on the end of a long ball in from the right after Rebrov had been knocked over by Titan Titus Bramble, but the ball was just behind him. Then a nice exchange of passes between Rebrov and Freund (yes you read right) saw Sergei show amazing awareness as he hit the ball with the outside of his right boot (while he was virtually facing along the 18 yard line) and sent the ball looping over the back peddling Wright onto the top of the bar. It was clear that we were witnessing something special here. Especially when Carr was put through on the right and ran into the box, where the on-rushing Richard Wright sent him crashing for a penalty. On 29 minutes, Darren Anderton stepped up and hit the spot-kick just right of centre with some power. Spurs were back in the game and a minute later they were ahead. A neat one-two with Rebrov sent Carr in again and Wright mindful that Stephen could cut the ball back to waiting forwards, dived to prevent that too early, leaving Carr the simple job of prodding the ball between him and the post for the second goal. It was a well weighted ball that provided Carr with the chance and almost the same sort of move that saw our number 3 set up Rebrov at Peterborough. This was not the end of things though. Ipswich pushed on and Sullivan was alert to save a couple of shots from free-kicks and Town also had a couple of headers off target from corners. Indeed, Marcus Stewart cam close to making it 2-2 when his low shot was misjudged by Sully (who seemed to go down in stages) and it bounced away off the post. Half-time saw a resurgence in Ipswich’s possession, but there was little made of it. In the half, Johnson had a couple of shots go wide and Sullivan had to get down quick to a low shot in from the right, but apart from that, the defence marshalled them away or managed to block any other attempts. At the other end, Darren Anderton smacked a free-kick against the Town post and Sherwood drove wide, Leonhardsen hit a shot inches wide of the left hand post, Rebrov hit a left foot shot wide when put through by Thatcher and completely miscued another left foot effort. The third Spurs goal came after Les had come on for Iversen. Some good work on the right and Dazza crossed perfectly for Sir Les to power in an unmarked header from a few yards out. He was obviously happy to have got on the scoresheet, but it was a good team goal and the sort we hope to see more of. Despite going one down, Spurs kept playing passing football and worked to break down Ipswich. Not every team will yield like the East Anglians, but there is hope there and from the few touches he showed today, Rebrov could make a lot of difference to the side. Goals from Frank Yallop and Boncho Guentchev gave Ipswich Town victory in this Premier League match at White Hart Lane. Justin Edinburgh headed off the Spurs goal-line and the ball was cleared out to 35 yards, but Frank Yallop hit a screamer back into the Tottenham net to give Ipswich the lead two minutes after half-time. That lead was extended when Spurs were denied a free-kick in attack, leaving Ipswich to break away on the left and when the ball came in, Guentchev was at the far post to tap it into a vacant goal with 79 minutes gone. A spectacular goal by Jason Cundy (his only strike for the club) earned Spurs a draw on their visit to Portman Road. With all eyes on debutant Teddy Sheringham, Cundy stole the limelight when, with half an hour gone, he challenged with Jason Dozzell for a ball from an Ipswich Town throw-in on the half-way line and his contact lofted it into the air and over Craig Forrest in the Ipswich goal some 50 yards away !! Later in the first half, John Wark equalised with a goal when he looked offside to share the spoils. He latched onto Geraint Williams’ chip over the Spurs defence to lob the ball over Walker, but the point took Spurs off the bottom of the table. Teams : |

Ipswich came to White Hart Lane one place off the bottom and left in a worse position after a 2-0 Spurs win. Clive Allen’s 20th minute opener came from a cute Hoddle pass that opened space for the prolific scorer to lob over Cooper’s head. Hoddle headed home a second shortly after, going in low to convert Falco’s header down from a cross by Chris Waddle in the 59th minute. Teams : |

Two Eric Gates goals in the 36th and 48th minutes made this First Division match a tough one for Tottenham to come back into, but Steve Archibald netted a stunning volley from Glenn Hoddle’s pass in the 55th minute to keep Spurs in with a chance of earning a draw. Gary Stevens forced Paul Cooper into a good stop, but ultimately, Tottenham were unable to catch the East Anglians, who extended their lead through Paul Mariner in the final minute of the match. Spurs had been on the end of a good kicking from Barcelona in midweek and Ipswich were sitting second in the League, so it was a surprise that Spurs won this one at White Hart Lane. Ray Clemence saved a John Wark penalty to give Spurs confidence to go on to take the points with a shot from Glenn Hoddle with just nine minutes remaining. Teams : |

A 3-0 win for Ipswich at Portman Road was not without some controversy. The first Town goal came in the eighth minute, when Eric Gates fired in a shot that beat Daines at his near post from a narrow angle, then with half-time approaching, Don McAllister tackled Paul Mariner in the area and the forward plummeted to the ground. The referee pointed to the spot and John Wark scored with the resulting penalty to make it 2-0 at the break. Daines made a good save from Frans Thijssen when he kicked out the Dutchman’s header with his feet while diving the wrong way, but he was helpless when Alan Brazil ran through, from what looked like an offside position, to put the ball past the Spurs keeper in the 68th minute. 17.12.1980 | Division 1 Home Won 5-3
Tottenham went ahead in this topsy-turvy game against Ipswich Town that turned on a red card at White Hart Lane. Having taken the lead through Garth Crooks, Paul Mariner equalised with a header just before half-time, but there was just enough time for Glenn Hoddle’s goal from a 25-yard free-kick restored the Spurs lead. In the midst of a hailstone storm, Eric Gates made it 2-2 in the 55th minute, before Perryman once more put Tottenham ahead a couple of minutes later, only for Mariner to level again. When Gates was sent off in the 76th minute, the tide turned in our favour and Steve Archibald and Ossie Ardiles scored to secure three First Division points with the 5-3 victory. Teams : |

With two inches of snow covering the Portman Road pitch, playing conditions were tricky as Spurs visited Ipswich Town. It was the Friday evening before Christmas and Spurs took the lead when Don McAllister headed home when Glenn Hoddle headed on Ricky Villa’s corner. However, Paul Mariner equalised in the 32nd minute and that turned the game in the home side’s favour. A second goal followed a few minutes later for Ipswich when Arnold Muhren drove in a half-volley and in the second half, Eric Gates wrapped up a 3-1 win. Teams |

A single John Pratt goal gave Tottenham the two points against Ipswich Town at White Hart Lane. The Suffolk side had good chances, but were unable to make the most of them. Mick Mills and Paul Mariner failed to capitalise on the good work of Clive Woods and in the second half, Alan Brazil’s shot was parried by Mark Kendall. The loose ball was struck back at goal by Brian Talbot, but Don McAllister was on hand to kick the ball off the goal-line. Seconds later, Pratt hit a shot at the other end that beat Paul Cooper after deflecting off John Wark for the winner. Teams |

21.08.1976 | Division 1 Away Lost 1-3
A first day of the season 1-3 reverse at Portman Road was not the start Tottenham wanted to the season. Spurs made the first chance of the game on a sunny afternoon, with Terry Naylor clipping the ball forward for Jimmy Neighbour to pull back for Gerry Armstrong, but he was beaten to the ball by George Burley. Then Naylor won a tackle, finding Armstrong on right wing, who poked it on to Neighbour. The winger cut inside and laid it into the path of Armstrong, who fired over from 20 yards out. Chris Jones then burst through three tackles left of centre and the ball broke for him as he got into the area, slotting the ball past Paul Cooper on the half-volley to put Spurs 1-0 ahead. Into the second half a Mills free-kick was played to Burley and his shot pin-balled through to an unmarked Mick Lambert in the box, who slipped the ball past Daines to equalise, although the Tottenham keeper was right behind a weak volley as Mills got forward. Spurs hit back, with Coates and Pratt linked before a first time pass released Armstrong on the right of goal and his angled shot went across the face of goal and wide. Again the ball ricocheted around the edge of the Spurs box before it fell for Talbot, but Daines was out to him quickly and smothered the shot and the keeper was quick to get down to his left to push Whymark’s low shot aside. But a throw in on the right allowed a cross to come in and Keith Bertschin’s shot was stopped by Daines’ leg, but the second effort went in to make it 2-1 with two minutes remaining. Spurs were cruelly undone again when a late free-kick was played right to Lambert and his shot was half-saved by Daines, but squeaked inside the near post in injury time. Teams : |

Ralph Coates struck a fine shot from a tight angle after only three minutes to give Spurs the early advantage against Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The Spurs winger’s shot flew past Paul Cooper and although David Johnson equalised for Town, from thereon in, Spurs went on to enjoy a good away win with a Keith Osgood penalty adding a second. Spurs were lacking inspiration as they ground out a 1-1 home draw with Ipswich Town. Ipswich were worth their lead, with Colin Viljoen scoring in the second half, but a header from substitute John Duncan, who out-jumped Kevin Beattie and George Burley, levelled the score and earned Spurs a point. A poor display by Spurs was condemned to defeat by four unanswered Ipswich Town goals at Portman Road. Kevin Beattie and Colin Viljoen had put Town 2-0 ahead at the break and the score was doubled by goals from Mick Lambert and Roger Osborne. Tottenham’s best chance came from a Martin Peters header that was saved by Laurie Sivell. Teams : Spurs manager Terry Neill – “I think those supporters are marvellous. I felt really sorry for them at Ipswich. They were still cheering us on when we were losing 4-0. I certainly would not have blamed them if they had been completely silenced by our performance. I only wish things had been different for them.”. |

Ipswich Town were the visitors to White Hart Lane on opening day and left N17 with two points. It only took one goal to win the match and it came in the second half, when striker David Johnson headed in from Kevin Beattie’s free-kick in the 67th minute. While Ipswich were ahead, Tottenham did have chances to equalise, but failed to turn them into goals. Teams : |

A hugely disappointing game with very few chances saw the defences come out on top. Alan Gilzean threatened the Ipswich goal in the first half, but it was in the second half that the goals came to see the game at Portman Road against Ipswich Town drawn 1-1. Phil Beal slid in to make a tackle as Mick Lambert was breaking onto a ball in the six yard box. An entertaining game was enlivened further when Colin Viljoen opened the scoring, but when Martin Peters was fouled by Kevin Beattie, he got up to plant the ball into the net from the penalty spot to equalise sending David Best the wrong way. Alan Gilzean thought he had doubled the lead, when he hooked past Paul Cooper from close range, but he was disappointed to see the linesman’s flag giving him offside and with a final push Spurs almost won the match, but had to settle for the draw. 03.04.1972 | Division 1 Away Lost 1-2
This First Division meeting at Portman Road ended in an Easter Monday win for the Suffolk side. The score was 0-0 at half-time, but Spurs had lost John Pratt with a serious nose injury during that 45 minutes. Into the second half, Tony Want put the ball past Jennings to give the home side the advantage, but Martin Chivers took a chance soon after to bring the scores level at 1-1. However, turning in a good performance, Ipswich grabbed a deserved winner late on through striker Rod Belfitt. Teams : |

02.10.1971 | Division 1 Home Won 2-1
Spurs had to come from a goal behind to take both points in this Division 1 game at White Hart Lane. Ian Collard had shocked the Tottenham fans by putting the Blues into the lead with an early goal, after exchanging passes with former Spurs Jimmy Robertson and hitting his shot just inside the post in the 16th minute. Town keeper Laurie Sivell did well to block a close range shot from Alan Gilzean. In the second period, Spurs started to gain the ascendancy and when Martin Chivers steered home the 58th minute equaliser, as Laurie Sivell and Derek Jefferson left a cross to give the Spurs striker and easy chance to score, it looked as though Ipswich would crumble under the pressure. Tottenham eventually gained the winner when Martin Peters scored from a Cyril Knowles free-kick to secure the victory, with the Town players calling for a Gilzean foul on Sivell, which was not given. Goals from Martin Chivers and a Peter Morris own goal won this First Division meeting for Tottenham. Chivers had headed Spurs into the lead before Morris unfortunately deflected a Martin Peters shot into his own net to see Spurs gain two points in this Easter Monday match. 23.03.1971 | Division 1 Away Won 2-1
Tottenham triumphed on their travels to Portman Road after coming back from being a goal down and having lost Cyril Knowles with a gashed shin in the first half. Mick Hill gave the home side the lead with a 17th minute header, but Spurs had to wait until the last quarter of an hour to get the goals to give them their win. Martin Peters smashed in the equaliser before Alan Gilzean popped up with five minutes remaining to score the Tottenham winner. In the remaining time, Ipswich still went close to scoring a leveller, hitting the woodwork in the last few moments. Teams : |

An Ipswich fight-back at White Hart Lane gave Spurs a fright before they managed to take the points with a 3-2 win. Tottenham were 2-0 ahead at the interval thanks to Alan Mullery and Alan Gilzean hitting the target. Jimmy Greaves made it 3-0 shortly after the break, but the visitors stormed back to peg Spurs back to 3-2 when Ron Wigg and Colin Viljoen netted. Former Spurs keeper, Ken Hancock, denied Jimmy Greaves his 200th League goal for Spurs with a flying save from a header and another save in the first half, but it was strike partner Alan Gilzean who won the day for Tottenham. The goal came when the Spurs man finished off a 48th minute move created on the left wing, involving Greaves. With Les Allen replacing ankle injury victim Bobby Smith, Spurs arrived at Portman Road with hopes of a second successive win there. But Ipswich stunned Spurs when Ted Phillips hit a 10th minute opener for the home side, but Tony Marchi pulled a goal back when he drilled home a left foot shot from 30 yards out in the 28th minute and then Terry Dyson put Tottenham ahead 11 minutes before the break, heading home following Peter Baker’s pass. Dyson netted a second goal after the interval, this time heading home Cliff Jones’ cross, but Ipswich came back with John Elsworthy scoring to make it 3-2, although they could not grab an equaliser in the remaining 15 minutes. Alf Ramsey’s return to White Hart Lane as manager of second place Ipswich Town could not have gone better for him. His team’s organisation was the key and striker Ray Crawford gave the visitors an early lead and they were disciplined enough to with-hold Tottenham’s attacks, until Jimmy Greaves broke through the defence and found the back of the net to make it 1-1 just before half-time. The respite was brief, as Ipswich got their lead back a minute after the interval through Ted Phillips.
