1995 | “The Cup tie that should never have been”. Following charges of irregular payments to players, the FA had found Tottenham guilty and expelled them from the FA Cup and deducted League points from the club to start the new season. However, chairman Alan Sugar appealed and took the matter to arbitration where Spurs were reinstated, had the points deduction annulled and were awarded a bigger fine. The last pairing of the draw had seen the non-league side Altrincham picked to play away to Tottenham or to have a bye to the next round (depending on the outcome of the appeal). Despite the possibility of going through to the Fourth Round of the competition, Altrincham threatened to sue the FA should they not play Tottenham, as they would miss out on a valuable pay day in terms of gate receipts. The match equalled Spurs’ biggest win over the non-league club. Stuart Nethercott scores his first goal for Tottenham. |
