Division 1 Away Drew 1-1
Liverpool had won all of their home games until Spurs came to visit Anfield in Division One.
Peter Beardsley put the home side ahead after 78 minutes, taking Gary Gillespie’s pass and driving into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out and Liverpool looked good for the points, but a share of them was secured for Tottenham by Terry Fenwick’s 88th minute equaliser. A short free-kick routine saw Paul Gascoigne play the ball to Brian Statham, who returned it for Gascoigne to cross into the box where Fenwick’s near-post header beat Grobbelaar to make it 1-1 just three minutes after the Liverpool goal. In the final minute, Chris Fairclough was sent off, but Spurs held on for a well-deserved point.

Steve McMahon scored for Liverpool in the 63rd minute and Craig Johnston netted a second 17 minutes later to give the Merseysiders the points at White Hart Lane. It hadn’t helped Spurs that Steve Hodge had been sent off for a foul in the 18th minute of Terry Venables’ first game in charge of the team.
McMahon’s goal came in the 62nd minute after Houghton’s pass cut through the Spurs defence and John Aldridge laid the ball into the path of the Liverpool midfielder to score. Steve Nicol and Aldridge worked a move to provide Johnston with a shot that beat Tony Parks to make it 2-0 with 10 minutes left.

Division 1 Home Won 1-0
Chris Waddle scored for Spurs in a rainy White Hart Lane to give Tottenham victory in this televised First Division game. His early shot skidded off the turf to beat Grobbelaar in the Reds goal. Tottenham’s cup runs had left them well behind the Reds in terms of position and points, but they had five games in hand, but having already won at Anfield earlier in the season, the team produced a fine solid defensive performance to hold the league leaders at bay and narrow the gap between the two sides.

Division 1 Away Won 1-0
It had been 73 years since Tottenham had last won at Anfield, but Garth Crooks’ 70th minute shot won a memorable game for Spurs.
Tottenham started confidently, having lost only once in 15 games, despite coming into the game off the back of a 1-2 home defeat by Manchester United. With nothing much happening in the first 20 minutes of the game, Ray Clemence was called upon to tip over a shot in the first half and then saved as Phil Neal broke into the Spurs box in the second.
The Lilywhites had to wait until the 71st minute for the winning goal. Mark Falco blocked a clearance and as the Liverpool players were shouting for handball, Micky Hazard fired in a shot that Bruce Grobbelaar could only parry, leaving Crooks the chance to nip in to knock it home.
Liverpool pressed to get back into the game, but the resolute defence kept the rampant Reds out and the long unwanted record was at last broken.

Ray Clemence returned from injury just in time for Spurs, as Tony Parks had suffered a cut knee and this was Steve Perryman’s 750th Spurs appearance, but it wasn’t a happy one as Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield.
With two minutes played, things looked interesting for Tottenham, as Gary Stevens handed Spurs a lead with a shot on the turn that went in off the underside of the bar following a Graeme Souness clearance from a free-kick being fed in by Glenn Hoddle. A determined start by Spurs almost lead to a second goal after 18 minutes, with Micky Hazard forcing Bruce Grobbelaar to a close-range stop and the follow-up was headed against the post by Ally Dick.
Twice Clemence denied Michael Robinson, first by stopping a volley and then rushing out to dive at his feet. Clem was unable to keep Liverpool out just before half-time, when Ronnie Whelan hit a long hopeful ball forward and Dalglish managed to hold off two defenders before shooting at goal, with the Spurs keeper getting a hand to it, but unable to stop the equaliser. That wasn’t the end of the action before the break, with Whelan striking a fierce drive that ripped into the net to hand the home side the lead with a second goal in a minute.
After the restart, Clemence did very well to keep a Dalglish effort out and then the Scousers’ striker put the ball over an invitingly vacant goal. It was catching, as both Whelan and then Garth Crooks missed open goals, but the Liverpool win was confirmed when Craig Johnston took the ball around Clemence and then pulled it back for Sammy Lee to fire home from 20 yards out.

Division 1 Home Won 2-0
Two Steve Archibald goals gave Spurs a Division One win over Liverpool at White Hart Lane, but the Merseysiders still won the League title thanks to results elsewhere. A dull first half saw Alan Brazil twist past Phil Thompson to hit a low shot at Bruce Grobbelaar after setting Steve Archibald up for a shot that flew just over into the Park Lane end.
A quickly taken free-kick four minutes after the interval almost went wrong. Alan Brazil tapped the ball to Steve Perryman, but it was a bit short. Perryman’s tackle took the ball wide to Glenn Hoddle on the right wing and he crossed for an unmarked Archibald to head home from five yards out.
Three minutes later, the Scot was on the score-sheet again when a throw-in deep in the Spurs half found Gary Mabbutt getting to the ball first as Mark Lawrenson hesitated. The pass was nudged through on the halfway line for Archibald to run through and slot past Bruce Grobbelaar from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.
Hoddle was pulling the strings in midfield, leaving Liverpool chasing shadows and created opportunities for Mabbutt and O’Reilly to go close, while Rush produced the only effort that made Ray Clemence make a save.

Glenn Hoddle shocked an Anfield crowd, expecting a procession to the League title, which was theirs with a win at their home ground
It was 26 minutes in when Hazard won an aerial challenge against Sammy Lee on the left wing, about ten yards into the Liverpool half and although it went to a Liverpool player, a loose touch allowed Chris Hughton to win the ball and play a short pass inside to Ricky Villa. He moved the ball on to Hoddle and the ball popped up off the pitch, which had cut up, allowing him to rifle a shot from all of 35 yards past Grobbelaar in the home goal at the Kop end. The keeper was left grasping thin air, as the ball bulged the net behind him. That was the highlight of the first half, so, when Ray Clemence ran out in front of the Kop for the start of the second period in a Spurs shirt, he got as warm a welcome as when he wore red.
The turnaround in the second half turned to cheers for the Kop’s own side, as Lee took a corner and Mark Lawrenson headed past his former team-mate and two minutes later, Dalglish rounded Clem to slot the ball into the unguarded net to turn the game around. A third was scored by Ronnie Whelan, as Paul Miller got underneath a Grobbelaar kick upfield and dropped for the Liverpool midfielder, who chested it down to run through the Tottenham defence and he beat Clemence with a rising shot from just inside the box that saw the Merseyside club lift the League trophy after the match.

Bad weather in the winter stopped Spurs hosting this Division One match with Liverpool until the start of May. Within eight minutes, Tottenham were ahead when Steve Perryman struck a rising shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat Bruce Grobbelaar. A mistake by Alan Hansen, whose header only found Mark Falco, lead to the second goal in the 43rd minute. Falco crossed for Steve Archibald to side-foot home to make it 2-0 at the break.
A foul on Kenny Dalglish by Graham Roberts led to a free-kick which the Scot took himself and it ripped past Aleksic in the Tottenham goal to reduce the deficit. It was 2-2 halfway through the second half when Dalglish lifted the ball over the Spurs keeper to earn the visitors a point.

League Cup Final Wembley Lost 1-3 (after extra time; score 1-1 at 90 mins)
Spurs had looked to have this League Cup Final sewn up until a late goal by Ronnie Whelan three minutes before the final whistle took the game into extra time. Steve Perryman broke up a Liverpool move and fed Glenn Hoddle, whose pass split the defence for Steve Archibald to slip the ball past Grobbelaar to give Tottenham a 10th minute lead and the same player was through on goal in the second half, with a chance to secure a 2-0 lead, but Grobbelaar defied him. All was going to plan until Whelan converted Johnston’s cross to take the tired Spurs into an extra 30 minutes.
During the extra time, Spurs were hampered by Tony Galvin’s injury following a harsh tackle by Souness, but Liverpool were the stronger side and in the 111th minute, Whelan curled a goal in from the left corner of the area and then one minute from the end, Johnston was again the provider, this time for Ian Rush to wrap up a win for the Reds.

Division 1 Away Lost 0-7
Tottenham were left stunned by a storming performance by Liverpool, who condemned Spurs to their biggest league defeat at Anfield in the 0-7 thrashing.
With Ardiles and Villa in the team, it was hoped that there might be some joy at Anfield for a change, but that looked doubtful when Dalglish scored after eight minutes, shooting under Barry Daines after controlling a shot from Jimmy Case, which was going wide. John Duncan had a god opportunity at 0-0 but failed to take it. A second goal on 20 minutes made it look a tough task for Tottenham to get anything out of the match, but again, there was a little good fortune, as Dalglish diverted Case’s fierce shot just inside the post. However, when Ray Kennedy’s far post header just before half-time flicked past Daines off John Lacy, it looked like the game was up.
That wasn’t before Liverpool put on a display in the second half safe with a 3-0 lead behind them. Two goals from substitute David Johnson left Spurs reeling and when John Duncan made a fine clearance off the goal-line, he was a hero for a few minutes, until he brought down Steve Heighway in the area to give Phil Neal the opportunity to score from the spot. It looked as if Daines would be the hero, as he plunged to his right to stop the spot-kick, but the ref thought he had moved too soon and the re-take went high into the net to make it 6-0.
That might have been the fortunes conspiring against Spurs, but the last goal was memorable for it’s flowing football. Tottenham had been attacking, but Ray Clemence played the ball to Kennedy, who moved it onto Dalglish. His pass found Johnson running onto it in the centre-circle and he took a touch, turned and fed Heighway storming up the left flank. Hitting a first time cross, he found Terry McDermott, who had made a long run from deep to plant a far post header past Daines to wrap up a totally miserable day for the large contingent of travelling Spurs fans.

Division 1 Away Lost 0-2
Spurs went down 0-2 to Liverpool at Anfield as the two sides met in the First Division.
Ray Clemence thwarted Jimmy Neighbour, beating him to a Ralph Coates through ball to clear, but seven minutes inot the match, Liverpool took the lead. Gordon Smith’s header fell to Ian Callaghan and the winger passed to David Johnson down the left wing. He cut inside and with a powerful right foot shot beat Pat Jennings from 20 yards.
Ian Moores put a header just wide with Clemence scrambling to get to the ball and then the keeper dived at Moores’ feet to deny him again. Spurs had to defend well and Naylor blocked Case’s shot and Jennings held Johnson’s follow-up effort. A Don McAllister slip let Case in and Jennings dealt well with the drilled shot that followed. Chris Jones put a header wide and Spurs were punished soon after, as Keegan took on two Spurs defender son the left wing before playing inside to Steve Heighway ,who scored past Jennings from the same spot as Johnson in the 30th minute.
The England goalkeeper also prevented Spurs getting a goal back when he saved a Keith Osgood penalty in the 34th minute following a foul by Emlyn Hughes on Steve Perryman. Then, just before half-time, Smith and Hughes let Moores get away with the ball and with Clemence coming out to him, he crossed for Jones, who again, put a header wide. Another late slip by Hughes was redeemed by his goalie, when Moores was denied with the ball whipped off his toes by Clemence.
Although Tottenham were giving the Liverpool defence a hard time, they could not convert their opportunities and Moores’ header straight after the interval went straight at Clemence. Perryman shot wide, then Johnson countered with a weak shot at Jennings and when Moores just failed to connect with Neighbour’s cross, from the subsequent corner Willie Young put in a powerful header towards the top corner was saved well by Clemence. From that, Liverpool broke and Case drove a shot narrowly over the bar and Callaghan shot wide from a free-kick.
Jennings had to be sharp to kick the ball out as Kennedy looked to latch onto Keegan’s through pass, while Moores still had no joy, shooting wide and Pat Jennings was still on his toes, with a well held save from Heighway’s rocket shot. Glenn Hoddle was too high with a shot late on and Keegan’s header set up Johnson for a late chance, but, he too, hit the shot over the bar from 10 yards.

Division 1 Away Lost 2-3
Spurs were disappointed to leave Anfield with nothing after taking a 2-0 lead against Liverpool.
First half goals from Chris Jones and John Duncan had put Tottenham in a strong position coming into the dressing room in the interval. John Duncan glanced a header in for the opening Spurs goal, with Emlyn Hughes failing to jump with him.
However, a penalty after the restart, which was converted by Kevin Keegan, kick-started a Reds revival, with Jimmy Case and Steve Heighway adding to that goal to give Liverpool a 3-2 home win. Spurs were denied a last-minute equaliser, when Ray Clemence closed down Steve Perryman and managed to deflect the Skipper’s shot wide for a corner.

Division 1 Home Lost 0-2
Two second half goals from Kevin Keegan and Peter Cormack gave the Reds a win against Spurs at White Hart Lane, which kept us in 20th position in the First Division.
Starting the game in energetic mood, Spurs had the better of the first quarter if an hour, but lost Cyril Knowles in the 23rd minute with an injury. With few clear scoring opportunities, Steve Perryman was foiled by Ray Clemence’s save and Brian Hall fired a shot over the bar for Liverpool.
Straight from the kick-off in the second half, Kevin Keegan scored for the visitors and only a rush from his line by Pat Jennings prevented Hall getting a second. However, this only postponed the Red’s addition to the score, as Peter Cormack’s header made it 2-0 and thwarted any hopes of a comeback.

Division 1 Away Lost 2-5
A heavy 2-5 defeat at Liverpool left Tottenham rock bottom of the First Division table.
Three minutes in, Phil Boersma opened the scoring and then four minutes later, he added a second, poaching a goal when Ray Kennedy’s shot was deflected into his path. The Liverpool striker grabbed his hat-trick before the half-time whistle was blown, as he headed in Brian Hall’s cross.
Steve Perryman hit Tottenham’s first goal, driving in a right footed shot from the edge of the area. Chivers got a good header on a cross from the right, but could not find the net, although he did score Tottenham’s second goal. With 70 minutes gone, Emlyn Hughes powered a rising shot into the top corner from 25 yards out and before the end Kennedy scored after being set up by Boersma to complete Liverpool’s scoring in their 5-2 win.

Having won the FA Cup against Newcastle United four days before this match and with Spurs due to play Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup final, both teams were at the tail end of a long season, but an entertaining 1-1 draw was played out on a May evening at White Hart Lane.
Chris McGrath put Tottenham ahead when he scored halfway through the second half, but Tottenham were pegged back within a few minutes by a Steve Heighway goal, which earned the League runners-up a point on their trip to the Lane. McGrath could have won it right at the death, but his shot went narrowly wide of the goal.

Division 1 Away Lost 2-3
The first goals conceded at their home ground scored by Martin Peters and Martin Chivers were not enough to stop Spurs slipping to defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.
Peters hit the target with a low shot from the right side of the penalty area to beat Ray Clemence, but Chris Lawler levelled the scores before the break. Chivers then gave Spurs the lead for a second time early in the second half. Peter Cormack shaved the post with a header, but it took a twice taken penalty from Alec Lindsay (Jennings having saved the first spot-kick from Emlyn Hughes, but had moved too early) and a last ditch Lawler shot that only went in via the post to earn the home side both points.

UEFA Cup Semi-final Second Leg Home Won 2-1 (lost 2-2 on away goals)
Spurs were at home in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final and were trying to recover a 0-1 deficit from the first leg.
A tense match stayed at 0-0 until just after half-time and Martin Peters then equalised on aggregate when he forced home Gilzean’s flick on from Chivers’ long throw. Things became that much harder when Kevin Keegan sent over a cross for Steve Heighway to knock past Jennings to make it 2-1 on aggregate. This meant Tottenham needed to score three times to go through to the final for the second year running.
Spurs continued to push forward and the unrelenting pressure saw the Reds pull all their players back into their own half. Peters smacked a shot against the bar and then Pratt headed wide when well placed. In the crowd, a massive buzz transmitted through the fans when Peters finally drilled home a right foot shot from just outside the six yard box following a goalmouth scramble to put Spurs level again overall.
Spurs went all out for the goal that would see the tie go into extra time, with Alan Gilzean heading Ray Evans’ free-kick just wide with the visitors’ goal leading a charmed life before the final whistle, but the Reds held out, with some staunch defending, to progress to the final on the away goals rule.

A 1-1 draw at Anfield in this First Division meeting was notable for a fine performance by Pat Jennings, who save two penalties in the match. Kevin Keegan’s spot-kick in the 39th minute was stopped by Jennings diving to his right and then he dived to stop a Tommy Smith penalty right down the middle with five minutes to go. As well as these saves, Pat was on the top of his game to deny Liverpool on a number of other occasions.

League Cup Fifth Round replay Home Won 3-1
A rain drenched pitch played pretty well considering and a good League Cup Fifth Round replay was won by a determined Tottenham side.
A Martin Chivers brace and a fierce shot from distance that fair tore into the net gave Tottenham a decisive 3-0 lead within 14 minutes of the kick-off. Chivers’ free-kick deflected off a defender and skidded off the turf to beat Ray Clemence in the fifth minute and then, after 11 minutes, a corner was played into John Pratt’s path by Peters and the Spurs midfielder smashed a pile-driver into the roof of the net past Ray Clemence from 25 yards.
Making it three in nine minutes, Chivers used his strength to break through to take the ball and smash a shot home from the edge of the area for a commanding lead, but Liverpool plugged away and Ian Callaghan hit back with another long-range effort with four minutes left, but Spurs held on to progress to the semi-final.

League Cup Fifth Round Away Drew 1-1
Having been under pressure for most of the first half of this League Cup Fifth Round, Spurs took a surprise lead on 54 minutes.
With Tottenham playing the better football in the first half, it was a surprise when the teams turned around goal-less, as just before half-time, Martin Chivers stretched to put a shot just over the crossbar from close range after a low ball into the box. However, when a Pearce corner fell to Martin Peters, the England striker knocked the ball in from 15 yards out with a left foot shot past Ray Clemence in the 54th minute.
Mike England had been in good form to keep the home side out and Jennings kept out efforts from Toshack and Keegan and then Larry Lloyd headed a chance over the bar. Steve Heighway had a shot saved by Jennings before the Spurs keeper was finally beaten by a rising left foot shot from Emlyn Hughes which rocketed past him with 12 minutes left to play following a Heighway corner.
Liverpool pressed for the winner, but Tottenham held out to take them back to White Hart Lane for another try.

Division 1 Away Drew 0-0
It was an agile display from Pat Jennings that earned Tottenham a point from their visit to Anfield in the First Division, with this being the fourth successive goal-less visit to the Reds.
The first half was slightly even, with Liverpool perhaps having more of the territorial advantage, while the second half saw the home team press harder for a goal. While the defence and Pat Jennings stood firm, there were opportunities at the other end. Mike England had a goal disallowed and then had another effort cleared off the line. Despite sustaining a knock on his hip, Jimmy Pearce battled on and forced a good save from Ray Clemence, but was eventually replaced by Phil Holder, who made his first league appearance.
The Spurs keeper had a hectic time and he kept out a penalty from Tommy Smith prior to the interval, but was indebted to Phil Beal and Tony Want for clearing the ball off the line when it eventually did beat him.

Spurs travelled to Anfield to meet the League champions and the home team were coming into the game off the back of their first European Cup game, which had seen them defeat Anderlecht.
Spurs found themselves hampered by an ankle injury to Tony Marchi in the 20th minute and he was a passenger on the wing for most of the match, as there were no substitutes allowed at this time.
Liverpool went ahead in the 40th minute, when Roger Hunt headed home after Ron Yeats provided Ian Callaghan the chance to cross the ball.
Spurs started after half-time without Marchi, but he made his re-appearance five minutes into the second period and soon after Jimmy Greaves surprised Reds keeper Tommy Lawrence, when he nipped in to divert the ball into the net at the Kop end as Jimmy Robertson’s shot looked like it would be easily saved by the goalie.

What Bill Shankly called a “great game” saw Spurs wreak their revenge for the loss at Anfield three days beforewith a 7-2 thrashing of the Reds at White Hart Lane. Jimmy Greaves put Spurs ahead, but fellow England striker Roger Hunt pulled the score level for Liverpool. By half-time, Tottenham had added goals from Cliff Jones and a Greaves penalty. Soon after the re-start, Jones added his second, while Hunt completed his brace to make it 4-2.

Division 1 Away Drew 2-2
Tottenham got away with a draw at Anfield as they put up a rear-guard action to keep the Reds at bay. Ted Ditchburn in the Spurs goal kept them out in the first period, but on 53 minutes Billy Liddell headed the opener for the home side, after Brian Jackson and Eric Anderson had opened up the way for his effort. Laurie Hughes made a poor header in his own box and Sonny Walters pounced on it to give Tottenham an unlikely equaliser, shooting under Dave Underwood in the Liverpool goal with 70 minutes gone.
Five minutes later, the Reds had restored their lead with John Evans scoring after being set up by Liddell and Jackson, but with only six minutes remaining, Tottenham gained an undeserved draw thanks to Frank Lock putting past his own goalkeeper as the ball was played in from the left.

Liverpool came to White Hart Lane for this First Division match, with Spurs, fielding two amateur wingers, looking for revenge for their defeat just five days before.
Liverpool went ahead in the 30th minute, with Brian Williams netting, but Vic Groves scored on his first appearance to bring Spurs level shortly after the teams had turned around. Len Duquemin’s shot was knocked down by ‘Pool keeper Charlie Ashcroft, but Tommy Harmer was on hand to give Spurs the lead from two yards out in the 69th minute.

The first half of this First Division game at Anfield was dominated by Spurs, but they failed to capitalise on their possession and only had Eddie Baily’s 18-yard drive to show for it, after he had been set up by Ron Burgess and Len Duquemin.
After the break Jack Smith brought the scores level for the home side, but was unfortunately carried off later with a badly bruised thigh. In the 86th minute, Kevin Baron was fouled by Les Bennett in the area and Liverpool legend Billy Liddell converted the penalty to give them a 2-1 win.
