09.01.1993 Premier League     Away     Lost     1-4

Tottenham’s only satisfaction from this 1-4 defeat at Old Trafford was a goal against Manchester United by Nick Barmby.  Teddy Sheringham played the ball to Barmby, who fed Paul Allen out wide, who crossed in low for the little forward to dart in and head past Peter Schmeichel in the United goal.  The goal was a mere consolation coming two minutes from the end of the match.

By then goals from Eric Cantona (40 mins), Denis Irwin (52), Brian McClair (53) and Paul Parker (58) had sealed a comfortable win for United.

19.09.1992 Premier League     Home     Drew     1-1

Spurs drew 1-1 with Manchester United in the Premier League at White Hart Lane.

Teddy Sheringham had an effort cleared off the goal-line before Ryan Giggs took the ball off Dean Austin, who had slipped over.  He nut-megged Jason Cundy and went racing in on goal to take the ball to his left and around Ian Walker to slide it into the net to make it 0-1 to United.  However, after the break, Spurs got their game together and Paul Allen fed the ball to Andy Gray, passing it on to Sheringham and the Spurs striker crossed beyond everyone in the goalmouth to Gordon Durie, who finished the move at the far post from five yards out to level the score.

United took the lead with Mark Hughes scoring from what looked like an offside position in the 21st minute, but Spurs got back into it with a goal on 38 minutes from Gordon Durie.  Samways took a quick free-kick and played in Nayim, who passed to Lineker.  His shot was knocked down by Schmeichel and Durie was on hand to put the ball into the net.

Paul Stewart’s second yellow card reduced Spurs to ten men in the 75th minute, but Mabbutt flashed a header wide and Walker made a fine save from Giggs when clean through.  When Bryan Robson headed a late winner from a free-kick ten minutes from the end, it was a bitter pill to swallow when it had been such an even match.

01.10.1988 Division One     Home     Drew     2-2

Spurs grabbed a late equaliser to tie the game up at 2-2 against Manchester United at White Hart Lane, but could have won it at the death.

Having played despite a high temperature, Chris Waddle handed Tottenham the lead in the 34th minute, running the ball forward from the halfway-line and going on to beat Jim Leighton with his shot after Mitchell Thomas’ pass put him through.  United levelled before the half-time interval with an acrobatic Mark Hughes volley and the score remained at 1-1 thanks to two Vinny Samways goal-line clearances in the first half.

When Brian McClair headed in Hughes’ cross in the 71st minute, it looked as though the points might be heading North, but Tottenham fought back.  Debutant Paul Stewart showed some good footwork to set up Paul Gascoigne and his shot hit the foot of the post and Stewart had a header cleared off the United line.  Samways created an opportunity for birthday boy Paul Walsh and his low shot was beyond the keeper’s reach to make it 2-2 with four minutes left.  There was still time for more drama, as Lee Sharpe brought down Stewart when he was through on goal in the area and a penalty was awarded to Spurs just a minute after Walsh’s goal.  Stewart took it himself, going for power and was disappointed to see the ball rebound some distance off the crossbar..

16.12.1983 Division 1     Away     Lost     2-4.

BBC TV televised this game and Tottenham ran out wearing the name of ‘Holsten’ on their shirts for the first ever time.  The one match deal was such a success that it was quickly extended to 1986 and then beyond that date, so lucrative was the partnership.

The match attracted a smaller than expected attendance, leading to the home side claiming over £300,000 from the fund to compensate sides for people staying away to watch it at home.  They saw Arthur Graham give United a 12th minute lead, but this was cancelled out in the 53rd minute by Alan Brazil’s overhead kick.  Gary Stevens picked the ball up in midfield and laid it off to Hoddle, who spread the play left to Ally Dick.  The Scottish winger lifted the ball over Remi Moses’ head before returning it to Hoddle, playing a ball into the box onto Gary O’Reilly’s head.  His header towards the penalty spot found Alan Brazil with his back to goal, so falling backwards the striker performed an over-head kick sending the ball low past Gary Bailey’s left hand and into the net.  However, a minute later, Kevin Moran slid in a well worked free-kick with Strachan being given the ball at the side of the wall and crossing low to the far post.

Graham added a 74th minute header to put Man U further ahead, but Ardiles played in Falco to hit a rising shot straight after to get Spurs back in it.  However, Moran’s second on 80 minutes wrapped up the victory for the home team.

21.11.1981 Division One     Home     Won     3-1

Spurs earned a 3-1 win over Manchester United at White Hart Lane in the First Division.

Spurs played towards the Paxton Road end in the first half and a corner by Glenn Hoddle was headed on by Graham Roberts, but defender Mike Duxbury nodded the ball up into the air.  Roberts went up for the ball again and it dropped to Mike Hazard, whose shot was deflected on it’s way past Paddy Roche in the United goal.

Another Hoddle corner this time found Roberts unmarked and his header went down past the keeper to make it 2-0, but before half time, Garry Birtles scored for United when a Ray Wilkins free kick was swung in and headed back across goal for the striker to hook a shot back across Clemence and into the net.

Spurs wrapped the game up in the second half when Hoddle lobbed a high pass down the right wing for Hazard to chase, but United got to the ball and made a mess of trying to play it out, only succeeding in passing the ball infield to Steve Archibald on the right hand corner of the area.  He took a touch inside onto his left foot and drilled it past Roche from 18 yards out.

09.01.1980 FA Cup Third Round replay     Away     Won     1-0

Spurs won at Old Trafford against all the odds, when a very physical challenge by Joe Jordan on Milija Aleksic left the Spurs goalie having to be carried off on a stretcher with a broken jaw.

With him seemed to go Tottenham’s FA Cup hopes, as midfield maestro Glenn Hoddle had to take over the gloves. Spurs battled away and kept plugging away, bravely taking the tie into extra time, with Hoddle withstanding Jordan’s aerial attentions.  It was then that the Argentinian pair of Ardiles and Villa linked up to produce a winner.  Ricky jinked into the penalty area, laid the ball back, almost physically knowing Ardiles would be there to sweep it into the net to give Tottenham a highly unexpected 1-0 win.

A dubious penalty converted by Sammy McIlroy saved Manchester United in this FA Cup Third Round tie at White Hart Lane.

Ossie Ardiles had swept the ball home to give Tottenham the lead, but a supposed push on Gordon McQueen from a set-piece saw the referee give a spot-kick, when it looked as though nobody had touched the Scots centre-half.

05.09.1979 League Cup Second Round Second Leg     Home     Lost     1-3

A 3-1 win for Manchester United in the League Cup Second Round second leg saw them through with an own goal, Steve Coppell and Mickey Thomas on the score-sheet.

Thomas’s goal in the 28th minute was the only goal of the first half and Gerry Armstrong levelled with a fine header from Glenn Hoddle’s cross in the 50th minute.  United levelled the aggregate score at 22 just two minutes later when a half-cleared ball was struck back past Barry Daines with power by Steve Coppell.  The goal that took United through to the Third Round was fortunate in the extreme.  Coppell made a good run and passed to Thomas on the left wing to cross the ball.  John Lacy sliced his clearance and the ball popped up and went in off an unlucky Paul Miller.

Spurs lost Gerry Armstrong in the last ten minutes after he was kicked on the foot.

10.03.1979 FA Cup Sixth Round    Home     Drew     1-1

A goal from Ossie Ardiles gave Tottenham the lead in this FA Cup Sixth Round tie at White Hart Lane, but Mickey Thomas pulled a goal back to take the tie to a replay.

Spurs applied most of the pressure in the first half, with Chris Jones having a goal disallowed for a foul on Gary Bailey when the United keeper dropped a high ball at his feet.  Don McAllister thundered a header against Bailey’s bar and Glenn Hoddle fired a 20 yard shot straight at the keeper.  Spurs won a free-kick on the right side of centre about 30 yards out and Perryman curled it into the area, where Ossie Ardiles had ghosted in across a defender and headed into the net, with Bailey having come out to try to take the ball.

Sammy McIlroy was booked for taking out Ardiles, as Spurs kept up their attacks, with Bailey scrambling to his left to save when Hoddle volleyed back a headed clearance by Gordon McQueen.  Just before the half-time interval Spurs had a good shout for a penalty when Martin Buchan slid in on Ardiles and did not appear to take the ball, but the referee was not interested in the claims.

The second half saw United move forward more and Steve Coppell had broken through the middle of the Spurs defence early on but when he got six yards out, he fluffed his shot under pressure from Terry Naylor.  Jimmy Greenhoff shot narrowly wide from the right before Mark Kendall reacted well to push Micky Thomas’ header wide.  From the resulting corner, Thomas flicked the ball on at the near post and it dropped for him, off McQueen’s backside, to force it in from close range for the equaliser.

United went looking for the winning goal and Andy Ritchie hit the top of the bar with a header from Greenhoff’s cross.  Spurs had another claim for a penalty when Jones was bundled over by McQueen as he went for a header, but the refusal by the ref got the Spurs forward for his protests.

Chances still came at each end, with Pratt forcing Bailey to a low save with a 20 yard shot and Steve Perryman almost let United in with a back-pass that was intercepted by Coppell.  He went around Kendall, but his ball into the goalmouth was cleared by John Lacy at the near post.  Substitute Peter Taylor broke through on the right side of the box and hit a shot across goal, before Sammy McIlroy had the last chance, breaking away down the United right, cutting into the penalty area to turn inside Perryman and his shot across the six yard box was kicked away from in front of goal by Naylor to leave the two sides facing a replay in a few days time.

12.02.1977 Division 1     Home     Lost     1-3

Spurs slumped to a 1-3 home defeat to Manchester United as they hovered above the relegation zone.

After Brian Greenhoff drilled the ball in from the left, United took the lead from a close-range finish by Lou Macari in the fourth minute.  It was Macari who juggled the ball on their right, just wide of the goal, before lifting it to the far post, where Sammy McIlroy headed in unmarked after 32 minutes after United had seen Keith Osgood’s shot from a short free-kick routine go narrowly wide.

Spurs made the score 2-1 in the 35th minute, when good work by Steve Perryman surging into the United penalty area on the right passed the ball back for Neil McNab to have a shot from 20 yards out.  Chris Jones was alert to it and standing about 10 yards out and in the middle of the goal, he reacted quickly to turn the ball past Alex Stepney.  McNab then fired another short free-kick from the left wing just wide from 15 yards, as Spurs pressed for an equaliser.

Stuart Pearson went close when played into the box, but his skewed shot past Jennings didn’t have enough power to beat Terry Naylor covering behind his keeper on the goal-line.

Into the second half, Gordon Hill had a chance when he broke clear after Perryman sliced a long clearance behind him for the Man U winger to take it to the edge of the box before his shot was saved low down by Pat Jennings.  Perryman’s high ball into the box was fumbled by Stepney under pressure and Taylor and Jones followed in, but the ball was scrambled away.

A long cross from right back Jimmy Nicholl bounced in the area confusing Andy Keeley and Gordon Hill capitalised by firing the ball high into the net past Jennings from close range.  Still Spurs fought back and Taylor played a one-two with John Duncan, forcing Stepney to touch his shot over the bar and then the keeper saved low on the line after Taylor’s long cross was headed goal-wards by Duncan.

04.09.1976 Division 1     Away     Won     3-2

Without a league win in the first three games of the season, it was a major surprise that Tottenham won at Old Trafford.

Winger Steve Coppell had put United in front after 16 minutes, with Stuart Pearson netting a second before half-time, as Spurs gave the home side a great deal of space, time and respect.  The second period was very different, as Spurs set about United in a determined fashion.  A goal from Ralph Coates, which swung straight in past the confused United keeper from a 56th minute corner put Tottenham back in it, while Ian Moores scored his first Spurs league goal after Naylor and Neighbour set up the opening for him.  With just ten minutes remaining on the clock, a left-footed drive from substitute John Pratt flew into the net for the winner to give Spurs all the points.

06.09.1975 Division 1     Away     Lost     2-3

A 2-3 defeat at Old Trafford was a disappointing result from Tottenham’s trip to play Manchester United in the First Division.

Spurs could have doubled their goal tally, but Chris Jones’ opening goal – a header from Jimmy Neighbour’s free-kick – was cancelled out when John Pratt’s clearance hit Ian Smith and the ball went into the Tottenham goal.

Gerry Daly put United ahead just before the break from the penalty spot and then the same player gave the home team a two goal cushion two minutes after the break.

Spurs went forward with attacking intent, with Jimmy Neighbour hitting a penalty kick against the bar and in the 82nd minute, they were rewarded with a second goal as Martin Chivers drove in from outside the box on the right side of the D.

Manchester United had been in the bottom four for most of the season and Ralph Coates single goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 win that plunged the home side to the bottom place.

The nervousness affected United and Spurs played a freer game, with the goal coming early in the second half.  Martin Chivers’ long throw deflected off a United defender and fell kindly to Ralph Coates around the penalty spot to rifle low past the keeper with his left foot.

United pressed towards the end, but John Pratt and Chris McGrath had chances to score on the breakaway, but Spurs had to settle for the one goal win.

04.03.1972 Division 1     Home     Won     2-0

Spurs had a 2-0 win at White Hart Lane in this First Division game against Manchester United to make it a disappointing debut for Martin Buchan.

Roger Morgan went close with a shot after racing onto a long ball into the left side of the box, while Ray Evans did well to get in a block to a George Best shot after the United winger pulled his left foot back just inside the box.

Tottenham had three good opportunities in the first half, with Morgan’s corner finding Alan Gilzean’s head, but it went wide, before England had a headed chance from a corner and Martin Chivers shot too high after Gilzean had provided the opening.

However, Spurs scored twice in two minutes in the middle of the second half to take both points. Steve Perryman emphatically hit the ball into the United net for the first goal (67 minutes and 28 seconds) and almost straight away, Martin Chivers fired home from a free-kick, giving Alex Stepney no chance (69 minutes and 09 seconds).

United pushed to get back in the game and put the Spurs goal under pressure towards the end, but there were few clear chances for the visitors. Bobby Charlton had a shot go wide, with Best twice testing Pat Jennings and other chances saw Willie Morgan go close with a shot and Charlton curl an effort just off target for United, who slipped to a 2-0 defeat.

31.01.1968 FA Cup Third round replay     Home     Won     1-0  (after extra time)

White Hart Lane was the stage for this bad-tempered Third Round FA Cup replay with Manchester United that was goal-less and went into extra time.

With both teams reduced to ten men when Joe Kinnear and Brian Kidd were dismissed in the second half after an off the ball incident and there was little football worthy of comment until Dave Mackay struck the post late in the 90 minutes.  As it was, the match was settled by Jimmy Robertson’s goal twelve minutes into extra time, tucking away Mike England’s header from Greaves’ cross.  The United players surrounded the referee as they claimed that England had impeded goalkeeper Stepney in the build-up, but their pleas were waved away and Tottenham saw out the remainder of the extra 30 minutes to move into the Fourth Round.

The opening minutes at Old Trafford saw Martin Chivers hand Spurs the lead, but United equalised when George Best blocked a clearance by Pat Jennings and netted the loose ball to draw the visitors level.  United’s keeper Alex Stepney kept the Red Devils in the match and then Bobby Charlton struck a trademark pile-driver to hand them the lead.  It was Chivers who took the tie to a replay when his late goal made the final score 2-2.

Tottenham left it late to edge past Manchester United in this First Division match at the Lane.

Jimmy Greaves had been denied by a fine stop by Gaskell early on, while Alan Gilzean was unlucky to see an effort bounce back off the woodwork, but it was George Best who set up the opening goal for Denis Law to head home n the 42nd minute.  It was Spurs who staged late surge to win the game with two goals in the final three minutes.  Alan Gilzean’s 87th minute header from Keith Weller’s cross brought Tottenham level and Jimmy Greaves hit the net a minute later after Gilly had sent him clear to give Spurs a 2-1 win at WHL.

18.12.1965 Division 1     Away     Lost     1-5

Manchester United got revenge for their drubbing at White Hart Lane earlier in the season by inflicting a 5-1 defeat on Spurs.

United played a long free-kick into the Tottenham penalty area, where it was headed out, but only to Booby Charlton, who struck it sweetly on the half-volley to put the ball past Pat Jennings into the top right hand corner of his goal.  United went 2-0 ahead when Crerand’s ball forward found Herd and as he dribbled into the muddy penalty area, the ball got stuck under his foot.  He still managed to get a shot away and although Jennings saved his attempt, the loose ball stuck in the mud and Denis Law slid in to put the ball into the net from five yards out.

The heavy pitch was not suiting Tottenham’s game, with United’s more direct style reaping the benefits, as Jennings’ goal-kick was headed straight back, with Laurie Brown caught on the ball in his own area, allowing Herd to play a low cross into the goalmouth, where Phil Beal tried to intercept, but could only put the ball into his own net.

Straight from the kick=off in the second half, Jimmy Robertson lifted a cross into the middle, where Cliff Jones rose highest to head low past Greggs to pull a goal back.  It was to no avail, as Spurs lost the ball 25 yards form the United goal and a long ball forward sent Herd clear on goal, where Jennings again saved, but the Manchester United man side-footed the rebound in to make it 4-1.  The rout was complete when Best put Connelly away on their left wing and his low ball in was met at the near post, where Law took a touch and beat Jennings.

The gates were closed on many waiting fans as Spurs met league champions Manchester United at the Lane.

Alan Gilzean and Neil Johnson gave Spurs a 2-0 half-time lead, with Jimmy Greaves (58 minutes), Eddie Clayton and Jimmy Robertson making it five before Bobby Charlton netted to get a consolation for United.

Greaves goal came at the end of a great move.  Eleven passes were made (involving Alan Mullery, Alan Gilzean, Maurice Norman, Dave Mackay and Eddie Clayton) before the ball came to Dave Mackay to hit a pass through to Greaves.  The striker spun away from the first tackle, sprinted clear of two defenders and as keeper Pat Dunne came out, he skipped around him and slid the ball into an empty net.

Bill Brown was on form in goal to deny Man United on a number of occasions, including turning a fierce drive from Denis Law over the bar, but the lead was doubled when Terry Dyson was alert to seize on a short Dunne back-pass, sticking the chance away for a valuable 2-0 lead just before the end of the match.

Division 1     Away     Won     4-3

Losing goalkeeper Ray Wood through illness was a blow for United and former England Schoolboy keeper David Gaskell came in as a raw 17 year old.  It proved a change which Tottenham benefited from. But the home side scored first, with Ted Ditchburn beaten by a 16th minute goal from David Pegg, who cut in from the left wing to rasp a drive past him.  The lead was short-lived, as four minutes later, Tottenham drew level with Bobby Smith beating Jackie Blanchflower in the air and taking the rebound on to score past Gaskell.  Smith was to prove too hot for the Manchester United defence and when he took down John Ryden’s 25th minute cross, he popped the ball over Roger Byrne’s head and hit a right-footed shot past the young Red Devils goalie.

Danny Blanchflower looked to play in Smith once more, but his brother Jackie got to the ball first, only to direct it into his own net, but Bobby got his hat-trick a couple of minutes before the interval, when he headed George Robb’s cross powerfully past the keeper to make it 4-1 to Spurs at half-time.As expected United came out for the second half pumped up and Pegg got a second goal with 60 minutes gone and then a 67th minute goal from Liam Whelan brought the score to 4-3 after he converted Eddie Colman’s well-flighted free-kick.  The match ended with great excitement with Ditchburn keeping out two late Colin Webster efforts at the death to preserve the win.

A midweek game saw the Busby Babes take the points against Spurs at White Hart Lane with a 2-1 win.

Duncan Edwards cracked in both United goals at the Park Lane end.  His first was a left footed drive from the edge of the penalty area on two minutes, with the second following on 41 minutes as he fired a pile-driver past Ted Ditchburn from 30 yards.  United had to struggle on with injured player Denis Violett and with the “crocked” Charlie Withers taking little part in the action, Spurs could only manage a late consolation as Harry Clarke rose to head home George Robb’s corner with two minutes to go, but it did prompt Ditchburn to take a quick throw-in (which was rarely heard of in those days) to try and produce a late equaliser.

Division 1    Away    Drew    2-2

A young Manchester United side, with an average age of 21, took the game to Spurs at Old Trafford and went ahead in just the second minute.  It was England left half Duncan Edwards who struck with a shot from the 18 yard line that flew past Ted Ditchburn.  Spurs had to get back into the game and did well, but could not find a finish to their build-up play.  Stokes did get a decent cross-shot past Wood in the United goal, but saw the ball bounce off the foot of the post and out.  United were switching play from wing to wing and just a couple of minutes before half-time, they extended their lead and it was Edwards again on the mark, with a 20 yard drive to double the advantage for the visitors.

Spurs strove to find a way back into the game, but had to be aware of United’s ability to attack.  The cause was not helped by an ankle injury to Charlie Withers, who had to move to outside left for the remainder of the game, effectively a passenger.  Ironically, the changes made to the Tottenham team affected Manchester United more and Wood was called upon to make some vital saves, until minutes from the end, when Robb’s corner was planted into the net by Harry Clarke’s head.  Clarke had a similar opportunity from a Withers corner minutes earlier, but had not been able to find the net.

Manchester United beat Spurs 2-0 on a frozen Old Trafford pitch with second half goals – firstly from an Alf Ramsey own goal and then a Stan Pearson goal.

Ted Ditchburn was in outstanding form as the Spurs team never really got going.  Alf Ramsey’s own goal, early in the second half should have been cancelled out, as Spurs had opportunities, but they cold not get past Allen in the United goal and five minutes before the end, Stan Pearson wrapped up the points for the home side with a second goal.

A huge crowd watched Spurs beat table-topping Manchester United at White Hart Lane.  Just before half-time, Les Medley hit a fine left-footed shot to give Tottenham the lead and a Sonny Walters effort made it 2-0 after 68 minutes. Spurs could have gone further ahead when a penalty was awarded following Johnny Carey’s foul on Walters, but Alf Ramsey’s spot-kick was kept out by Reg Allen in the United goal.

A Tottenham team hit by injuries and illness lost to Manchester United 1-2 at Old Trafford.

With Ron Burgess carrying an injury and influenza hitting Les Bennett, Spurs travelled north with hope and with an early lead in the bag from Eddie Baily, who converted a pass from Les Medley, it looked like a surprise could be on the cards.

However that optimism didn’t last long, with Brian Birch squaring things a few minutes later.

Into the second half, Jack Rowley got in ahead of Alf Ramsey and Harry Clarke to net United’s second, beating Ted Ditchburn with his fierce shot to win the game for the Red Devils.

A convincing win for Spurs saw them take the points in this First Division match.

Tottenham had the lead when Jimmy Armstrong beat keeper Lance Richardson after timing his run from the halfway line past the United defence to perfection, with Spurs going further ahead when Taffy O’Callaghan scored the second with a fierce shot before the half time whistle.

Tich Handley put in a cross after the break for Jimmy Dimmock to make it 3-0 with a shot off Richardson’s legs, before Billy Chapman laid on an opportunity for Billy Johnston to pull a goal back for United.  However, Armstrong struck again with a 40 yard shot that rattled the underside of the bar as it swerved and dipped to deceive the keeper and hit the back of the net  to round off a 4-1 win for Tottenham.

The traditional return fixture was played a couple of days later and with home advantage, United took the points with goals from Frank McPherson.  Handley had given Tottenham a glimpse of hope with a header and things might have been even better for Spurs had Tommy Clay not slipped his penalty (given for a foul on Frank Osborne) past the post in the 17th minute. What chances a penalty being given against United at Old Trafford these days ??
