Notable Dates

1954 Gerry Armstrong, forward 1975-1981, born.

1984 With the first leg drawn and Spurs having an away goal, the tie was evenly balanced.  When Anderlecht took the lead after Czernatynski broke away and slotted home, it looked as though the game was up.  The crowd fell deathly silent and when the match re-started, the roar of the crowd drove Spurs forward.  Ossie Ardiles was brought on and one of his first touches hit the bar, but the ball was returned into the box with interest by Micky Hazard.  Falco was in there, but Graham Roberts (captain for the night in the absence of the suspended Steve Perryman) chested the ball down and rammed it in from close range.  His goal took the tie into extra time, but with no further score the Cup was to be decided on a penalty shoot-out.
Rookie goalkeeper Tony Parks saved the first penalty from the Belgians, while Spurs scored their next four.  Danny Thomas stepped up needing to score to make the cup Tottenham’s, but the Anderlecht keeper went the right way to save.  The crowd chanted “There’s Only One Danny Thomas” as he wandered back to the centre circle with his head in his hands.  Arnor Gudjohnsen strode up to take the last of the penalties to square the scores, but Parks dived to his right and kept the ball out and made Tottenham the winners of their second UEFA Cup.  It was also an emotional night for Keith Burkinshaw, who had decided to resign from his post at the end of this season and going on a high note was how the players wanted to finish his time as a Spurs manager.

1986 Tommy Cable, centre half 1928-1932, dies.

2021 Tottenham’s second goal was the 100th away goal scored against Leicester City in competitive matches.
Leicester City’s second goal was the 50th goal scored by the Foxes against Spurs in the Premier League.
Toby Alderweireld makes his 200th career Premier League appearance.
