Prior to Tottenham’s redevelopment of the White Hart Lane Stadium with the building of the East Stand in 1935, an architect’s artist named as Macdonald on the drawing showed Archibald Leitch’s design for the stadium.  A date looks like ’34 in the bottom left hand corner of the postcard.
Leitch’s trademark steelwork formed the front of the Upper east Stand and the inclusion of the raised standing area above the terraces that ran down to the pitch formed the legendary “Shelf”, although these features cannot be seen on the postcard as only the rear of the East Stand in what was known as Paxton Road in those days (now Worcester Avenue) pictured.
Beyond the old West Stand, the Red House can be seen (formerly on the corner of Bill Nicholson Way and the High Road) and across the road from the stadium, St. Francis de Sales church (corner of Brereton Road and the High Road), which is still there to this day.
We are grateful to Terry Newman for giving MEHSTG a photo of the postcard.
