10.10.1914 Sir Robert Baden-Powell visited White Hart Lane for this match and was opening the new rifle range at the Tottenham Rifle Club after the game.

10.11.1934 1934 World Cup winners Italy watch Spurs play Middlesbrough at the Lane, just four days before meeting England in a friendly match.  “They (the Italians) spoke in high praise of the play of individual members of both sides and expressed their satisfaction that they had not to play against (George) Hunt on Wednesday.”
Hunt had been called up as a replacement for Manchester City’s Sam Tilson, but got a knock in the Boro game and had to withdraw himself.

Nick Barmby Came up through the ranks at Tottenham and was a big hit with the club in his 102 games for the club as a forward, but wanted to move nearer his home town of Hull, so bought by Boro for in 1995 for £5,250,000.  Appeared 49 times in 14 months at the Riverside, but moved on to Everton.

Alex “Sandy” Brown A free-scoring forward came down from Scotland to play for Preston North End and Portsmouth before joining Spurs to contribute goals in every round (including two in the final and one in the replay) that helped them win the FA Cup in 1901 as a Southern League side.  64 goals in 84 games showed his instinct for putting the ball in the net and his ability soon came to the attention of Portsmouth, where he stayed for a season before moving to Ayresome Park. 15 goals in a two season stay at Middlesbrough came before moves to Luton Town and Kettering Town before returning to Scotland.

Michael Carrick Signed by Spurs for £3.5 million in 2004 and was an influential figure in Martin Jol’s time in charge, but in 2006 he was sold to Manchester United for a fee that could rise to £18.6 million.  Eventually went into coaching at Old Trafford and had a short spell in charge as a caretaker manager, but took on the manager’s role at the Riverside in December 2022.

Allan Hall Signed by Boro from Doncaster Rovers in March 1928 and scored on his debut, but failed to get a regular place in the side.  Moved on until Tottenham picked him up from Lincoln for £3,000 in June 1933.  Made only two first team appearances, but was captain of the reserves and once scored 49 goals in 38 appearances for the second and third teams !!  Spurs got their money back on him, when he moved to Blackpool in March 1934.

Les Howe Played for Middlesbrough once in season 1944-45 as a guest player during WWII, while on RAF service in the North-East.  His career was with Spurs in the South though and he made 268 appearances for Spurs scoring 42 goals in the process.

Robbie Keane Well-travelled striker who had two long spells with Spurs, winning the League Cup in 2008.  On retiring form playing, he teamed up with former team-mate Jonathan Woodgate to be assistant manager at Middlesbrough in 2019.

Cyril Knowles Made Boro debut in April 1963 and played 39 times for them between 1962 and 1964 before signing for Tottenham in May 1964 for £45,000.  Played over 500 times for Spurs at left back until he had to retire in 1976 with a knee injury.  Later coached at Middlesbrough.

Mido Strong-minded Egyptian forward, who had trouble with his weight at Spurs, despite the fact that on his day, he could be a handful.  Joined in 2005 on loan and that was made permanent in 2006.  Scored 19 times in 61 matches for Tottenham before he left to join Boro in 2007, when it looked as though he would not be getting selected as first choice.  Stayed at the Riverside for three years making 32 appearances, scoring seven times.

Graeme Souness Having come through the ranks at the Lane, Edinburgh born Souness thought he should be getting more first team exposure.  Bill Nicholson disagreed and the Scot wanted away, because he was “homesick”, so he got a move to Middlesbrough, where he played from 1972 to January 1978.

Jonathan Woodgate Middlesbrough born, centre half Woodgate started with Leeds, before moving onto Newcastle United and Real Madrid before signing for his hometown team in 2006.  Came to Spurs in the January transfer window of 2008 for £7 million and scored the winning League Cup final goal within six weeks of joining THFC.  Went on to manage his home-town team with former team-mate Robbie Keane as his number two, then had a spell at Bournemouth as Scott Parker’s assistant and returned to Boro in the same capacity alongside another ex-Tottenham player, Michael Carrick.

Luke Young Started at Spurs and came through the youth set-up to join the first team, but in 2001 he left to join Charlton Athletic, then moved to Boro for 2.5 million in July 2007.

Christian Ziege Spent three years at Spurs from 2001 to 2004, during which he was hit by injury, but played 52 times in the left back/midfield slot.  Had earlier been with Boro from 1999-2000 playing 34 games before leaving for Liverpool.

Wilf Mannion Middlesbrough legend Wilf Mannion played for Spurs as a guest player during the Second World War making four appearances in the 1941-42 season in the London League.
