Two long range efforts sank Millwall on their pre-Christmas visit to White Hart Lane, but with better finishing, Spurs could have made the winning margin even bigger.

01.11.1972
There was an air of tension that surrounded this first meeting of the two clubs for five years in the heyday of hooliganism.   Millwall fans tried to infiltrate the home crowd for this League Cup 4th Round, but a massive police presence stayed any violence that may have occurred in the ground.

Tottenham had qualified for this round just two days earlier, with a second replay win over Middlesbrough in extra time, so it was a fresher Millwall side that took the field.  However, Spurs were obviously suffering few ill effects from the previous match and took the game to the Second Division opposition, with Martin Peters heading home a Knowles cross from close range beating Bryan King in the visitors goal just after 10 minutes of the game and Alan Gilzean’s left wing cross was hammered home by Steve Perryman to give Tottenham a 2-0 lead just prior to the 15 minute mark.  Millwall were unable to push Spurs closer, although former Spurs striker Derek Possee gave Tottenham a couple of nervy moments.  So, despite having the bulk of the opportunities in the match, Tottenham had to settle for the two goal margin to take them through to the Fifth round.

Millwall Athletic, who were seven place above Tottenham in the Southern League table, were favourites at Northumberland Park and were sent back to the Den on the back of a 3-1 defeat.

Harry Bradshaw put Tottenham into the lead when he buried a low shot into the net just before half-time, with Jimmy Melia and John Cameron working well together to create the opportunity.

The lions were on equal terms just after the second half kicked off thanks to a Calvey goal, but Harry Erentz passed to John Cameron, who restored the lead in the 65th minute, with the home win sealed by Tom Smith’s right-wing run and cross being tucked away by Bill Joyce.
