26.10.1994 League Cup Third Round    Away     Lost     0-3

A humiliating defeat by Notts County in the League Cup at Meadow Lane was the final straw for Chairman Alan Sugar, who sacked Ossie Ardiles a day later.

3-0 was not too flattering for Russell Slade’s side, although Tottenham contributed to their own downfall with errors and lack of self-control, having to play catch-up after conceding two Notts County goals in two minutes.

Tony Agana cut inside past his marker to shoot across Thorstvedt into the opposite corner in the 17th minute and then Gary McSwegan doubled the lead with a header.  Things got worse for Tottenham when Ilie Dumitrescu received his second yellow card in the 38th minute.  Although Spurs tried to get back into the match, the home team made their extra man pay when McSwegan got his second and County’s third, with Agana being the creator.

10.03.1991 FA Cup Sixth Round     Home     Won     2-1

Don O’Riordan’s goal for Notts. County in the FA Cup Sixth Round was not enough to take the Magpies through, as Paul Gascoigne inspired Tottenham to a semi-final place at Wembley.

Dean Thomas had gone close with a long range shot that bounced just in front of Erik Thorstvedt and hit the outside of the post and later Kevin Bartlett got his shot past the keeper, but Gary Mabbutt was in place to head the ball off the line.  Bartlett went over in the box, but the ref only awarded a corner, but from it, the ball fell into the path of Don O’Riordan, who handed the Magpies the lead with a fierce drive through Paul Allen’s legs that beat Thorstvedt all ends up four minutes before half-time.  A short corner played to Nayim and his shot flicked off Craig Short’s standing leg and went in off the post to make it 1-1 six minutes after the break.

Steve Cherry in the County goal had to be alert to make two sharp saves, one from a deflection off the boot of Dean Thomas. Gascoigne had been involved with an incident with Paul Harding which saw him elbow the County man in the face, but he stayed on the pitch and scored what was to be the winner with just seven minutes remaining, when he finished a move that incorporated a couple of one-twos on the edge of the box to curl the ball past Cherry with his left foot from twelve yards to win the tie.

Tottenham had struggled against a stubborn County side from the Second Division, knowing it was important for the club’s financial security to win this tie.

Spurs earned a League Cup Second Round Second Leg 2-1 win to go through against a Notts County, who belied their lowly league position, 3-2 on aggregate.

After a goal-less first half, Tottenham took the lead with a 61st minute with Terry Fenwick converting a penalty awarded after Nicky Law had handled the ball on the goal-line.  County equalised seven minutes later with a goal from Adrian Thorpe following a corner,  but a goal ten minutes from time from Paul Gascoigne settled the tie in Tottenham’s favour.  The midfielder clipped the ball over the wall and into the top corner to end County’s battling resistance.

27.09.1988 League Cup Second Round  First Leg     Away     Drew     1-1

Spurs visited Third Division Notts. County in this League Cup Second Round First leg tie.  County had dropped Gary Lund and Don O’Riordan for the experienced Geoff Pike and Garry Birtles to come in.

A low Mills cross from the right wing found Pike running into the six-yard box, but the former West Ham midfielder fell over the ball.  When Spurs hit back, Paul Walsh set Waddle away through the middle, and he shot from 25 yards out, forcing Leonard to save to his left.

A second half County corner was poorly cleared and Birtles hit a volley from the left of the goal into the ground, bouncing over Bobby Mimms to give the home team the lead two minutes in.  The pitch was uneven and it was no surprise that there was going to be odd bobbles off the turf.

Mimms had to dive to his left to keep out Pike’s diving header, then Tottenham went straight up the other end and Waddle played a ball into Paul Allen from the left, finding him on the edge of the D.  He spotted Samways to his right and played the ball in front of him to sweep it home first time beyond the keeper to equalise.

Spurs had other opportunities with Waddle threatening, but Bobby Mimms had to make a very good stop from Geoff Pike’s header and Tottenham survived a late Mills free-kick that curled onto the crossbar leaving the first leg of this tie ended up all square.
