MATCH REPORT

Once both sides has completed a minute’s applause for the recently passed away Dave Dunmore, who served both clubs, the friendly got underway in blazing sun.

Young midfielder Nile John was on target with an early effort, striking a low shot from an acute angle on the right that former Spurs Academy goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux got down to save.  John tested the goalie again with a long range effort, with Orient’s Aaron Drinan heading just over in between and Daniel Nkrumah’s cross almost deceived Joe Hart, but ended up dropping harmlessly over the bar.

In the 38th minute, Spurs took the lead when Lucas Moura instinctively turned a pass around the corner for Dan Scarlett to run onto to his left.  Taking the ball into the area, the 17 year old slid a slow shot under Vigouroux and into the far corner for the opening goal of the afternoon.

Into the second half, a 60th minute free-kick outside the area from Dan Kemp brought a brilliant save from Alfie Whiteman, a half-time replacement for Hart.  As is normal for a pre-season friendly, lots of substitutions were made, with Nuno Espirito Santo replacing all 10 outfield players in the 65th minute !  As it was, it was the Orient sub Ruel Sotiriou that made an impact, intercepting a loose pass near the halfway line, the youngster strode forward and moved the ball onto his left foot before putting a curling shot from inside the box out of Whiteman’s reach to make it 1-1 in the 72nd minute.

Kemp put a shot wide of the Spurs goal as Orient looked for the winner and sub Jack Clarke went on a run that ended up in the home team’s penalty area, where his shot was blocked by Craig Clay.

Orient will be the team with more satisfaction from the result, but for Spurs, it was an opportunity to give 22 players a run-out and without the majority of their international players, it was a chance to see how the youngsters functioned in a first team setting.
