06.09.1988 | Spurs Youth shocked Leyton Orient on their visit to Mill Hill with a second half five-goal blitz after the first half ended 0-0 in this South-East Counties Division 1 match.
The score-line does not reflect a game that did not have five goals between the teams, but Tottenham were ruthless with their finishing after the half-time interval. Just after the restart, Kevin Smith played a through pass for Neil Smith to run onto and score, adding a second goal five minutes after the first in similar fashion. A foul brought Shaun Murray down in the box and he got up to take the penalty, only to see it saved. Luckily, Steve Smart was alert to the rebound and beat the keeper to make it 3-0. When Steve Carney flicked on a corner at the near post Andy Theodosiou headed in the Spurs fourth and the final goal came from substitute Matthew Edwards, who ran onto Smart’s through pass to slide the ball past the keeper. 12.12.1987 | While the game’s first 15 minutes were even, Spurs went on to put in an impressive away performance to win 4-0 at Springfield Park.
Ian Gilzean raced away down the right wing and put in a cross for Tommy Fitzgerald to fire home in the 16th minute with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area, making it 2-0 nine minutes later with a clever lob over the O’s goalkeeper. Ten minutes into the second half, Jason Cook scored a penalty after Richard Johnston had been fouled. With Polston and Butters proving a solid central defensive pairing, Spurs kept a clean sheet and with fifteen minutes remaining, Fitzgerald created a chance for Johnston, which he took to complete a fine win.
