A shock FA Cup win for Port Vale shocked multi-talented Tottenham at Vale Park in this Fourth Round meeting.

A sprightly start by Tottenham go close when Clive Allen set up Chris Waddle to poke a shot narrowly wide, but the game soon turned in Vale’s favour.  On a heavy pitch, Port Vale tore into Spurs and Ray Walker put Vale ahead in the 13th minute, latching onto a pass from Gary Ford to fire it into the top corner of Tony Parks’ goal from 25 yards out.  Phil Sproson put the Valiants 2-0 ahead in 25 minutes as a long free-kick into the Tottenham box was chested down by Darren Beckford and was struck into the roof of the net by the left foot of the midfielder.  Only a very good diving save by Parks prevented a Beckford diving header extending the home side’s lead further.

Even though 19 year old Neil Ruddock’s first goal for the club – heading in Waddle’s right wing free-kick – pulled a goal back for Spurs in the 65th minute, Terry Venables’ team never looked like overcoming the determined Port Vale side, who sat seventh bottom from the old Division Three, despite Clive Allen and Gary Mabbutt going close towards the end.

29.01.1955 A Fourth Round FA Cup tie saw both teams take to the White Hart Lane pitch in striped shirts.  Tottenham wore blue and white stripes, while Vale sported red and white stripes. Tottenham took a quick 2-0 lead as Alf Ramsey and Eddie Baily carved out a chance for Johnny Brooks to hit a 20 shot that swerved in on five minutes, before Brooks netted the second ten minutes later when keeper Ray King palmed out Len Duquemin’s shot in front of goal.

Port Vale brought the score back to 2-1 when Ken Griffiths got a 23rd minute goal, but the two goal gap was restored when Duquemin netted just before the half-time whistle.

21.11.1931 The Second Division game against Port Vale at White Hart Lane was the first time that Spurs scored nine goals in a League game.

Spurs had just missed out on promotion at the end of the previous season, but the new season was proving a big disappointment, although they had won their previous home game by 6-2 against Swansea.

Prior to the game Port Vale were above Spurs in the League table but Spurs ran out convincing winners.  Centre forward George Hunt scored twice and the rest of the goals came from the right side of the team.  Right winger Willie Davies scored a hat-trick, inside right Jimmy Brain claimed two, while right half Davie Colquhoun and right back Albert Lyons scored one each, Lyons netting from the penalty spot.

Spurs v Port Vale Youth Match Reports

.
13.02.2008 Port Vale shocked Spurs with a 1-0 FA Youth Cup Fifth Round win at Vale Park.

A 12 match unbeaten run counted for nothing as Spurs faced a fiesty Vale side who capitalised on Tottenham’s ability to turn possession into goals and the home team grabbed a first half goal that turned out to be the match-winner.

An early Port Vale attack saw Oscar Jansson having to save with his feet after James Lawrie fed Danny Glover in on goal in the first minute and although Danny Rose’s header, getting on the end of a mis-hit shot from Daniel Hutchins was well saved by the Valiants’ keeper Chris Martin, but he had been offside anyway.

In the 11th minute, Jamie Elwell launched a long throw into the penalty area and Jonathan Crompton jumped above the Spurs defenders to head past Jansson.  The Spurs keeper did well to keep out an effort from Simon Richman, while, at the other end, Adam Copeland twice denied Ryan Mason an equaliser before half-time.

The second period was a much tighter affair with only one clear chance, coming Tottenham’s way when Rose raced down the right wing and planted a cross onto Jon Obika’s head.  Only six yards out, he was unable to make a solid connection, allowing Martin to save and protect the Port Vale lead.
