05.03.1994 Premier League     Home     Drew     2-2

Spurs fought out a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United in the Premier League at White Hart Lane.

Both sides were struggling in the Premier League when Spurs hosted Sheffield United in March 1994, but despite both sides needing the points and it being a tight match, there were good chances created.  Brian Gayle had put the Blades 1-0 ahead in the 57th minute before Kevin Scott equalised in the 64th minute, heading home a free-kick.  A goal from Nathan Blake four minutes from time looked like winning the match for the Yorkshire side, but Jason Dozzell popped up with an injury time goal when he headed in a high ball into a crowded penalty area to salvage a draw for Tottenham in their battle against the drop and against one of the relegation rivals.

11.09.1993 Premier League     Away     Drew     2-2

Despite twice taking the lead, Spurs had to settle for a point at Bramall Lane.

Teddy Sheringham’s 14th minute finish to Darren Anderton’s cross put Tottenham ahead, before Adrian Littlejohn hit a low shot to pull the Blades level in the 47th minute.  In the 53rd minute, Sheringham shot home as he fell to score for Tottenham in a goalmouth scramble, where United keeper Alan Kelly was injured.   Just ten minutes later, Littlejohn got his second when he hit home Dane Whitehouse’s cross to earn a share of the points.

02.03.1993 Premier League     Away     Lost     0-6

Spurs suffered their heaviest league defeat by Sheffield United in this Premier League match, but there was a weakened Spurs side fielded with a Sixth Round FA Cup tie just five days away.

Franz Carr gave the home side a 13th minute lead when he received a short corner from Hodges, turned to smash a fierce shot into the top corner past Thorstvedt’s left hand and a headed Andy Gray own goal (that went in off the bar and Thorstvedt) extended their lead with 21 minutes gone.  Two goals in two minutes from Ian Bryson effectively put the game beyond the makeshift Spurs team, which still should have put up a better display.  The first came when Spurs were looking for an offside, but he drilled a shot home and the second was taken on the turn to convert Deane’s cross.

Sheringham did bring Kelly into action with a header, but Hodges shot wide when well placed and Deane’s chip just cleared the bar.

Into the second half, Tottenham did have a few chances, with Teddy’s free header off target, Darren Anderton shooting into the side-netting and substitute John Hendry striking the post with a shot.   Two late goals from Brian Deane, who seized on Jason Cundy’s hesitation and only Gary Mabbutt’s bravery in heading Hodges’ volley that left him pole-axed prevented another goal, as did the referee, who ruled out Alan Cork’s effort for offside.  Paul Rogers made it six of the best for United when he finished Deane’s set-up to round off a night to forget for Tottenham.

02.09.1992 Premier League     Home     Won     2-0

Spurs achieved their first home win in the Premier League with this victory over Sheffield United.

Teddy Sheringham marked his first home match as a Spurs player with a neat finish and strike partner Gordon Durie added a second to round off the win, with United’s misery completed by goalkeeper Simon Tracey’s dismissal late in the game.

Sheringham’s goal came a minute before half-time, when Paul Allen cut inside from the right and played a low cross for Sheringham to stick the ball in from about two yards out. after wrestling the ball off Andy Gray as he prepared to take a throw-in.  The second Spurs goal came in the second half when a long punt up-field by United was headed back and Gordon Durie intercepted the ball.  He took the ball to the left corner of the box and keeper Simon Tracey followed him, but the Scottish striker cut back onto his other foot and curled a lob over the keeper into the empty net.

Late in the game, a back-pass played to Tracey saw him try to dribble the ball out, but Vinny Samways closed him down and the went off the keeper for a Spurs throw.  Tracey went to get the ball, but the ball-boy threw it away from him to Andy Gray, who, in trying to take a quick throw-in with the keeper out of position, was flattened by Tracey, who was shown the red card.

The game was tight until the 51st minute when Paul Walsh headed Tottenham into the lead, then turned provider to put Nayim in for Spurs’ second goal.  Walsh netted his second of the night when he chipped over Blades keeper Simon Tracey and then fired high into the net for his hat-trick with just a minute remaining.

20.08.1977 Division 2     Home     Won     4-2

Spurs started their campaign after being relegated to Division Two with a home game against Sheffield United.

United shocked the expectant White Hart Lane with a successful penalty on 21 minutes from “Chico” Hamilton, but John Duncan brought Spurs level glancing John Pratt’s corner delicately into the net.   Chris Jones gave Spurs the lead and then Keith Osgood converted a penalty to make it 3-1.  The Blades had not given up and Keith Edwards reduced the deficit on 43 minutes.

The second half was a more sedate affair and Keith Osgood’s second spot-kick with 20 minutes left gave Spurs a winning 4-2 lead.

On the back of three straight wins, Spurs were in confident mood for the visit of the Blades, who were bottom of the table at the time. Willie Young gave Spurs a half-time lead with a header, but after the interval the margin was added to by John Duncan’s header, a fine Steve Perryman goal, a Martin Chivers strike (his last goal for Spurs) and a stylish fifth from Perryman.

06.12.1975 Division 1     Away     Won     2-1

A brace from John Duncan secured a 2-1 First Division triumph with the winning goal for the second season running at Bramall Lane, overcoming a determined Sheffield United side.

The game was quite even for the first half hour until John Duncan scored from Ralph Coates’ throw-in in the 38th minute.

The Blades pulled level in the 78th minute with a Dave Bradford goal and it looked as if the points would be shared, but Tottenham kept going and Chris Jones could have scored when released to run through on goal, but his shot was aimed wide. However, with just a minute remaining, Duncan was on hand to forcing the ball home from close range and win the match for Spurs.

18.01.1975 Division 1     Home     Lost     1-3

Struggling Spurs crashed 1-3 at home to Sheffield United in a First Division match, which was under threat until an hour before kick off because of the torrential rain.

John Duncan struck the opening goal into the second half, with a shot on the turn at the Park Lane end, as the rain bucketed down. But it was the Blades who found the cutting edge to win 3-1 at the Lane with goals from Tony Currie halfway through the half levelling things up before late goals from Keith Eddy and Alan Woodward took the points for United.

Spurs squeaked a narrow 1-0 away win against Sheffield United for a valuable two points.

Tottenham’s back four held firm against an early onslaught from the Blades, but there was a chance early in the second half, when a long ball up-field was taken on by John Duncan to score the only goal of the game.

John Pratt went close with a low shot that was just off target and Martin Chivers put a header on target, but was denied by the keeper.

Spurs lost for the third time at home at the start of this season to a late Sheffield United goal.   The game was settled by a goal in each half by Sheffield United in their visit to White Hart Lane in the First Division.

Going in off the post, Alan Woodward’s powerful drive gave United the lead in the first half, but Mike Dillon hit the post with a header from a corner and Martin Chivers scored Spurs’ only goal to pull Tottenham level when Ray Evans and Alan Gilzean combined to create a chance.

There were opportunities for Spurs to take the lead, but they were not taken, leaving the way clear for Jim Bone to score when Tottenham’s defence failed to clear the ball as the late strike allowed United’s to take the points.

What was a disappointing match ended 2-0 to Spurs, who could not create a chance until 14 minutes had passed, when captain Mike England headed wide. Tottenham then turned the pressure on the Blades defence and scored both goals in this period.

Martin Chivers had opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the six yard box at the Park Lane end, shooting past the keeper John Hope and two defenders on the line after Ralph Coates mis-kicked Cyril Knowles’ low cross in the 15th minute.

Ten minutes later, Alan Gilzean took Roger Morgan’s pass that left the United back four static and the Spurs striker had time to shoot home, minutes after heading a good chance over the bar.

The second half was less memorable, with John Hope twice denying Gilzean and near the end, Alan Woodward cut through the Spurs defence with a good run, only to screw his shot wide at the end of it.

Tottenham’s visit to Bramall Lane ended in a 1-3 defeat by Sheffield United.

The Blades came at Spurs from the start and broke through in the 38th minute, with Bill Hodgson scoring, before Len Allchurch made it 2-0 shortly after half-time. Dave Mackay lofted a ball over the United defence for Jimmy Greaves to run on to and convert, but while searching for an equaliser, Keith Kettleborough scored a third to seal the game for the home team.

05.09.1955 Division 1     Away     Lost      0-2

Spurs were sent to the bottom of Division One by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane as the home side took both points with a 2-0 victory.

It was a poor performance by Spurs, as they sought their first win at the Blades since 1925, but it was only during a 20 minute spell in the first period that they showed anything like some decent play.  Seven corners were won and from those there were only two shots on goal to speak of.  It was too much to ask to hold onto the goal-less score-line until half-time and Colin Grainger netted with five minutes left before the half-time whistle.

Into the second half, it was the home side who held sway and scored a second goal, with Grainger once more the scorer.
