20.09.1989 | League Cup Second Round First Leg Home Won 1-0
A single Terry Fenwick goal won this dull League Cup first leg match for Tottenham. Paul Sansome in the Shrimpers goal played heroically and Spurs, lacking confidence from a poor league start, struggled to break down the United defence. The goal came a quarter of an hour from the end, when Terry Fenwick headed in a Steve Sedgley cross and ran to celebrate in front of an empty East Stand (which was awaiting works being completed). 11.01.1936 | FA Cup Third Round Home Drew 4-4
A home FA Cup tie saw Tottenham face a familiar face in Len Bolan, who had been transferred to the Shrimpers a couple of months before. The Tottenham Herald noted that former Tottenham players James Baxter, Albert Peter and R. Drysdale returned to the Lane from their retirement homes by the sea to take in the match. It was Southend who took a 1-0 lead after ten minutes when Bolan put the “Law of the Ex” into practice and netted for the away side. Spurs pushed forward and George Mackenzie in the United goal saved a spot-kick from Les Howe. Johnny Morrison pulled Tottenham level, then Fred Sargent put us into the lead, before Bolan brought it back to 2-2. Shortly after the restart, Bolan netted to complete his treble, but a rush of three goals in six minutes saw both Sargent and Morrison put Tottenham into a 4-3 lead, but Lane scored an equaliser to tie up a 4-4 draw in front of a 48,839 crowd who paid £3,500 to watch the game. 19.02.1921 | FA Cup Third Round Away Won 4-1
The Kursaal Ground staged this first meeting between the two sides in the FA Cup Third Round and the home side took a 13th minute lead, when winger George Nicholls hit a low shot into the net. In the 38th minute, Jimmy Cantrell rose to nod a Banks corner home for the equaliser. The home team should have restored their lead after 30 minutes, as Smith fouled striker Nuttall right on the goal-line to concede a penalty. Shrimpers captain Fairclough stepped up to take the spot-kick, but the referee moved the ball, as he claimed it was not on the spot. Fairclough wanted to replace it, but the ref would not let him touch the ball, which obviously upset the Southend skipper and he subsequently put his penalty wide of the goal. On the hour, Cantrell hit the bar and it that took the ball into the path of Jimmy Banks, who netted Tottenham’s second. Bert Bliss was brought down for a free-kick that he then converted from 25 yards to make it 3-1 and the Spurs scoring was rounded off by Jimmy Seed, who finished off Banks’ cross into the area. The crowd of 11,600 paying £2,993 was a record for the Shrimpers at the time. Teams : |
