02.03.1985 Division 1     Away     Won     1-0

With a goal against his former team, Garth Crooks gave Tottenham the points with the only goal of the game at the Victoria Ground.

A back-pass to the Stoke keeper Barry Siddall saw him miss his kick, allowing Crooks to walk the ball into an empty net and he looked sheepish both at the nature of the goal and it being against his old club.  Following this match, the Potters failed to pick up another point and were relegated as the bottom club in the First Division.

27.10.1984 Division 1     Home     Won     4-0

In what turned out to be a relegation season for the Potteries side, Spurs ran out 4-0 winners in this First Division clash at White Hart Lane.

Within 11 minutes, Tottenham had scored twice through Clive Allen and John Chiedozie and the sending off of afro-haired defender George Berry after he struck Mark Falco off the ball left Stoke a difficult task for the remainder of the game.

They held out until the 75th minute, when Clive Allen added his second of the game and when emergency centre half Brendan O’Callaghan fouled Falco in the area, Graham Roberts stepped up to convert the spot-kick to make the final score 4-0.

05.11.1983 Division 1     Away     Drew     1-1

A Mark Falco equaliser saw Spurs leave the Victoria Ground with a point in a First Division match against Stoke City.

Struggling Stoke took the lead after a bright start by Spurs, as Mickey Thomas netted in the 24th minute.  Losing Gary Mabbutt in the first half with a groin injury brought Gary O’Reilly on in his place and Spurs equalised soon after the change.  Glenn Hoddle threaded a pass through to Steve Archibald, whose shot beat the keeper, but it bounced out off the post to Mark Falco, who stuck the rebound into the net.

Spurs should have put the game beyond Stoke in the first half when they had a number of chances to score, with the team not being as creative in the second half and there was only a half-chance falling to Mark Falco to speak of.

29.12.1979 Division 1     Home     Won     1-0

Two familiar faces on the Stoke City side could not prevent Tottenham running out 1-0 winners on Terry Gibson’s debut at the Lane.

Ray Evans had left Spurs to join the Potters and striker Garth Crooks who was soon to be making the move to London when he was snapped up by Keith Burkinshaw in 1980.   Gibson was using his dogged physical presence to disturb the experienced City back line and he had a role in the goal, which was struck home with an angles shot from the left by John Pratt just before the half-time interval to take the points in this First Division meeting.

Pratt had two more good efforts and Terry Gibson threatened the Stoke goal three times in a match that had few scoring chances.  Gibson brought two good saves out of Peter Fox in the Stoke goal and found himself alone in the box, but fired his shot too high.  In contrast, Milija Aleksic only had one save to make from Alan Dodd halfway through the second period.

Teams :
Spurs –  Milija Aleksic, Chris Hughton, Gordon Smith, Don McAllister, Steve Perryman, John Pratt, Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles, Terry Yorath, Chris Jones, Terry Gibson (Tony Galvin 83)

29.10.1977 Division 1     Away     Won     3-1

Spurs were faced with an early barrage from Stoke, but weathered the storm to take both points at the Victoria Ground.

Spurs almost let a goal in right at the start of the match, but Barry Daines reacted well to keep out Stoke striker Garth Crooks on two occasions and David Gregory also.  Against the run of play, Gerry Armstrong gave Spurs a 29th minute lead when he converted a flick on by John Pratt from Peter Taylor’s corner.

At the start of the second half, Terry Conroy wasted a good chance and Daines was again called upon to save from a swerving shot from Steve Waddington, which went for a corner.  The Spurs goal was under siege for a few minutes, but following a save from Paul Richardson, Daines launched the ball up-field for Ian Moores to set up Armstrong to shoot Tottenham’s second goal after 61 minutes.

Crooks pulled one back for the home side with a neat header from Richardson’s cross in the 73rd minute, but Glenn Hoddle delivered a corner onto John Pratt’s head to score the third Spurs goal past keeper Roger Jones that put the game beyond Stoke’s reach.

23.04.1977 Division 1     Away     Drew     0-0

Spurs held Stoke City to a 0-0 draw at the Victoria Ground when a win was more vital to avoid relegation.

A good first half gave hope of a victory, but the Potters were revitalised after the break.  They were indebted to Peter Shilton at the end though, when Hoddle took the ball off a defender and the keeper’s dive at his feet robbed him of a scoring opportunity.

Stoke put in a final effort to find a winner, but they could not breach the Spurs defence.

02.11.1974 Division 1     Away     Drew     2-2

Spurs fought out a 2-2 draw at the Victoria Ground with Stoke City in this First Division meeting.

An early goal shocked Spurs, when Geoff Salmons scored an eighth minute opener, but John Duncan turned the game around before the break.  Ralph Coates’ cross had been back-heeled into Duncan’s path to slide in to fire the equaliser and within five minutes, he had struck a left foot shot for the second after he had been set up by Martin Chivers.

There was still time for Jimmy Greenhoff to pull Stoke level at 2-2 with 36 minutes left on the clock.  Despite the home team exerting a lot of pressure on the Spurs defence, they could not break through and nearly caught on the break when Ray Evans’ right wing run produced a cross that was just a little too far ahead of Martin Chivers, who was unable to get a touch on the ball.  However, it was Chivers who nearly made it 3-2 later, when he struck a left foot shot just over the bar from eight yards out.

The Potters took the lead through a goal stabbed home in the goalmouth by John Ritchie in the second half, but Spurs worked their way back into the game with Mike England hitting the crossbar with a header.  Then, following a free-kick, Ray Evans struck a powerful drive form outside the penalty area to level the scores and within two minutes, John Pratt had headed Spurs ahead with what turned out to be the winning goal.

07.10.1972 Division 1     Home     Won     4-3

Spurs dominated the first half of this match at White Hart Lane against Stoke City, but the roles were reversed after the break and Tottenham held out to win 4-3.

John Pratt gave Tottenham an early headed lead, Gilzean headed a second and Pratt then guided the ball past the Stoke keeper to make it 3-1, with John Ritchie having pulled a goal back for the Potters just minutes after Gilzean’s goals.

The same Stoke striker scored soon after the half-time interval and then Cyril Knowles played a shrewd pass along the turf to give Ralph Coates the chance to make it 4-2, which he took calmly.  Despite having created multiple chances in the first period, there was a nervy end, with Alan Bloor scored a third Stoke goal and Jimmy Robertson, the former Tottenham winger, narrowly failed to grab a late equaliser, missing the goal by inches..

30.10.1971 Division 1     Away     Lost     0-2

Two John Mahoney goals saw Stoke City beat Spurs at the Victoria Ground and take two First Division points. There was little of note that happened in the first half when Spurs were in the ascendancy.  While Tottenham had a lot of possession, they failed to break through Stoke’s four man midfield and in the first ten minutes of the second half, they were hit by two goals from John Mahoney. The first came from a long range shot that caught a deflection off a leg to get through and the second goal came when the ball was not cleared by the Spurs defence and Mahoney capitalised.

Spurs did make a bid to get back into the match with Pratt setting Chivers away only to be stopped by Gordon Banks before Martin Peters shot narrowly wide. Jimmy Pearce’s shot was hacked away and then Chivers’ header was well saved by Banks, as he fell backwards.

Two Martin Chivers goals and one from Alan Gilzean in the first half wrapped up the victory over the Potters.  Joe Kinnear’s cross from the right was headed on by Martin Peters to Chivers, who slid the ball home and then Peters’ run was ended with a ball into the box for the striker, who went in for the ball, but it dropped loose for Alan Gilzean to hook it home past Gordon Banks at the Park Lane end.  Tottenham’s third goal saw Chiv ease Denis Smith off the ball on the left on the halfway line, out-pace the defender and then curl the ball around Gordon Banks from just outside the box.

Stoke tried to battle back, but substitute Willie Stevenson broke his leg in the 57th minute, leaving the Potters with ten men and little opportunity to get anything out of the match.

The half-time interval featured a stand-up row between Bill Nicholson and Alan Mullery, when the manager criticised Martin Chivers in the dressing room, despite the two goals he had scored in a match that saw Jimmy Neighbour come on as a substitute for his debut.

23.03.1968 Division 1     Home     Won     3-0

Coming into the game without a win in five league and cup games, Spurs put an end to that run with a 3-0 home win over Stoke as they found their scoring boots at White Hart Lane after two previous goal-less draws.

Terry Venables played a free-kick into the area for Mike England to head home, getting there before Gordon Banks.  Spurs lost Martin Chivers to injury, being replaced by Alan Gilzean and minutes later, the lead was doubled when Jimmy Greaves played in Jimmy Robertson, who powered a shot at goal that Banks could only help it on its way into the net.

Just after half-time, Alan Mullery’s cross was headed in by Cliff Jones to hand Tottenham a much needed victory.  Alan Bloor had Stoke’s three best efforts, but Pat Jennings was equal to his shots, while Banks denied Greaves three times to keep the score down and to prevent the prolific goal-scorer his 300th league goal.

A third minute lead for Tottenham was not enough to hold Stoke City on their own ground, as they came from behind to win this First Division match. Terry Venables had scored to put Spurs ahead, but Harry Burrows equalised in the 18th minute and then scored what proved to be the winner before the interval.  Spurs were not helped by a knee injury to Jimmy Greaves that saw him replaced by substitute Eddie Clayton, with Mike England moving into attack to replace Greaves.

27.11.1965 Division 1     Home     Drew     2-2.

Spurs drew this First Division match with Stoke City at the Lane 2-2, with goals from Alan Gilzean and Jimmy Robertson.  All four goals were scored in the first half. Dave Mackay tried a shot from 25 yards, but it was deflected into the path of frank Saul, just inside the box.  He tried an early shot but could not keep it down and it flew into the Park Lane end.

Getting between Skeels and Palmer, Alan Gilzean headed Frank Saul’s cross down past Irvine to net the first goal for Spurs from inside the six yard box.

Roy Vernon tested Pat Jennings with a low shot from 20 yards, but the Spurs keeper got down to his right to hold the ball.  Alan Bloor made a good forward run and played in Peter Dobing, who was brought down by Mackay as he got into the penalty area.  Vernon stroked it low past Jennings to the keeper’s left to equalise from the spot.  Vernon was involved again, as Stoke took the lead.  He played a pass out to the left wing, where Burrows took on Beal and shot only to see Jennings save, but the loose ball ran to Dobing, who put it into the net from the edge of the six yard area, beating two Spurs players to the ball.

With Dave Mackay’s cross-shot from a free-kick wide on the right being headed in across the keeper by Jimmy Robertson, the second goal came at the Park Lane end and made it 2-2 on 29 minutes.

Just before half-time, Dobing ran from the halfway line to hit a shot that Jennings saved at his near post.

Into the second half, Clayton hit a low effort just wide from 25 yards out, while Pat Jennings saved a Maurice Setters header from a corner, with a Stoke player just unable to turn in the loose ball and had to be alert to keep out Dobing’s low shot to his near post after Laurie Brown had given the ball away on the edge of the Spurs box.  From the corner, Bebbington hit the bar with a looping header and the Knowles blocked a shot by Roy Vernon after the Welshman shot from the edge of the box, only to see the intervention take the ball inches wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

IN contrast a penalty given to Spurs before the break was knocked home by Alf Ramsey to make the score 3-0 at the interval.

07.01.1950 FA Cup Third Round     Away     Won     1-0

Spurs travelled to the Victoria Ground for a FA Cup Third Round tie, which they won 1-0 against Stoke City.

It was a bit of a giant-killing, with Spurs being in the Second Division and Stoke the First, but Tottenham’s performance was assured and skilful, with the tie being won by a single goal against First Division Stoke City.  It came in the second half, with Bill Nicholson recycling a Ron Burgess free kick into the box that Eddie Baily made the most of to find the net with his header.

There were further chances when Les Medley struck the bar and goalkeeper Derek Herod being forced into a fine fingertip save to put Len Duquemin’s header over the bar.

Having endured a string of long-term injuries through the season, Spurs sat 16th in the league table when top of the table Stoke City visited White Hart Lane, but Tottenham turned the tables with a 3-2 win.

The injuries kept on coming, as captain and centre-half Arthur Rowe sustained a knee injury that saw him stretchered off early after the game went into the second half and Eugene O’Callaghan was already struggling with a knock, so with no substitutes, Spurs were down to nine men.  However, despite being 2-1 behind, with George Hunt having struck for Tottenham, the team rallied back.  O’Callaghan roused himself to fire in an unstoppable shot to level the score at 2-2 and with just minutes remaining in the match, Walter Bellamy scored to send the crowd wild.
