20.08.1997 Tottenham’s Reserves visit to the County Ground in the Football Combination saw them defeat Swindon Town 2-0.

Spurs started with Paul Mahorn as a lone striker, but the team found it difficult to get in behind the Robins’ defence, but Peter Gain had a couple of chances before Garry Brady and Jose Dominguez worked an opportunity for Jamie Clapham, whose shot went narrowly wide.

Having improved as the first half progressed, Tottenham moved forward with more confidence and it brought two openings for Stuart Nethercott, with his first effort coming back off the goalpost.  Hill and Dominguez had scoring opportunities and Mahorn was played through, but the keeper saved well.  The breakthrough eventually came when the Swindon keeper picked up a back-pass and from the free-kick inside the box, Hill touched the ball to Clapham, who curled the ball into the net.

The second goal came soon after, as Leon Townley volleyed in Gain’s cross after a corner had been cleared.  The chances continued to arrive and Mahorn went around the keeper, only to see his shot cleared off the line, Clapham tried a shot from 30 yards that the keeper saved and Townley looked for a second goal, but again the ball was kicked off the line.

04.03.1972 This Football Combination match at the County Ground ended early with 56 minutes gone because of the torrential rain that waterlogged the pitch.

The score was 1-1 at the time, with Mike Dillon’s left foot shot putting Tottenham ahead halfway through the first half, after Jimmy Pearce had missed an early chance and Alan Mullery had a shot saved.

Snow started falling on the already wet pitch and with players sliding everywhere, Swindon capitalised on defensive confusion in front of the Spurs goal to level the scores.

With the conditions becoming “diabolical and more suited to water-polo” according to Eddie Baily, the game was called off 11 minutes into the second half.
