08.03.1986 Division 1     Home    Won    5-0

Going two goals up in ten minutes of this First Division encounter, Spurs were well set for victory. Three minutes into the match, Gary Mabbutt finished off a Graham Roberts long-throw that was flicked on by Chris Waddle and knocked against the post by Mark Falco.  Falco was also on hand for the second, getting to Danny Thomas’ cross, but there has always been some dispute as to whether he or WBA defender Derek Statham got the last touch to make it 2-0.  Spurs were 4-0 up by the break, with Tony Galvin adding a third and Falco getting his second of the game.

The second half was a more sedate affair in comparison and Imre Varadi missed Albion’s best chance before Waddle finished off the scoring with a fifth goal.

29.01.1983 FA Cup Fourth Round    Home    Won    2-1

Spurs edged this FA Cup Fourth Round against West Bromwich Albion despite going a goal down.

Defender Clive Whitehead popped up in the Spurs penalty area in the 55th minute to put the visitors into the lead, but this was soon wiped out when Garth Crooks equalised.  Whitehead had to leave the field after being involved in a crunching tackle with Graham Roberts.

Spurs were the better team for the remainder of the game, but only had one goal to show for their endeavours with Terry Gibson netting in the 74th minute with a fierce shot into the far corner of the net.

This win gave Spurs their record 18th unbeaten FA Cup tie, since being knocked out in the Sixth Round of the 1980 competition by Liverpool.

10.02.1982 League Cup Semi-final Second Leg     Home    Won     1-0

An attritional battle with West Bromwich Albion saw Spurs win out with a single goal to take them to Wembley and a League Cup final with Liverpool.

Ricky Villa’s injury ruled him out of the match and Micky Hazard took his place in midfield.  Alongside him, Tony Galvin tested Mark Grew twice in the early stages, with the keeper also denying a fine shot by Hoddle.  The Spurs defence did well to nullify the threat from Albion’s centre-forward Cyrille Regis and built on their solid first half to take the game to WBA in the second period.

Glenn Hoddle flighted a superb pass for Mark Falco to head the ball into the path of Micky Hazard, who fired it past Grew for the opening goal of the game with 55 minutes gone.  Albion launched attacks to try and get back on level terms, but apart from Steve Perryman clearing a ball from in front of the goal, there was not a great threat from the visiting forwards,.  Towards the end of the match, it was Spurs who were the more likely side to score, with Garth Crooks bringing a good save from Grew and then Tony Galvin hit a shot hard at goal in the closing minutes, but could not find the net.

03.02.1982 League Cup Semi-final First Leg     Away    Drew   0-0

A 0-0 League Cup Semi-final first leg draw at the Hawthorns was watched by a crowded Spurs section that was crammed with fans after the gates gave way before the kick off.

Despite the buoyant atmosphere in the away end, the game failed to live up to any great expectations, with few goal-scoring opportunities.  Monaghan fired an early shot just wide after Cyrille Regis brought the ball down for him, but he pulled a groin doing so.  Hoddle’s astute ball into the right side of the box was retrieved by Crooks, who pulled the ball back for Paul Miller to shoot and goalkeeper Mark Grew did well to keep the ball out from the close range effort.  Crooks took a return pass from Hoddle and pulled the ball back again, this time to Ricky Villa, but he got under his shot that ended up way into the crowd behind the WBA goal, as did Hoddle when Villa played him in – a move that started with Ardiles coolly lifting the ball over a home forward on the edge of the Spurs box.

Paul Price was booked for hauling down Andy King as he looked to get past him and then Martin Jol cynically tripped Chris Hughton as he broke away from the ensuing free-kick.  Then Crooks joined them in the book for a kick at Owen as the game drifted through to half-time.

The second half started with a corner for the home side being cleared and falling to Steve Mackenzie, whose volley was deflected out to the wing.  From another corner, Bennett headed towards goal and Andy King just couldn’t turn on the ball, which was cleared away.  Galvin’s tackle on Martin Jol was deemed to be a bookable offence, as was Hoddle for a foul on Owen as the referee got card happy.  When Brendan Batson clashed with Villa, he only received a yellow card and Ricky got booked for getting punched in the face.

Meanwhile, back at the football, Crooks forced Grew to a save with a shot from 20 yards out, but that didn’t last for long, as Martin Jol hauled Tony Galvin back and Jol was missed by the Spurs winger’s swinging arm, Galvin got a second yellow and as did Jol for his second yellow.  Ossie Ardiles shimmied past two defenders and struck a shot from inside the box with about five minutes left, seeing the ball zip past the angle as the game finished 0-0.

07.11.1981 Division 1     Home    Lost    1-2

Albion won this First Division encounter at White Hart Lane 2-1 against Spurs.

Tottenham had to struggle on despite shoulder injuries to Ossie Ardiles (replaced by John Lacy) and Graham Roberts, who had to soldier on until the end of the match.  Albion took the lead with the ball cannoning off the post from Alistair Brown’s shot and hitting the chasing Chris Hughton to go into his own goal with 22 minutes gone.  Tottenham’s response was swift, with an Ossie Ardiles free-kick leading to a goal for Garth Crooks.

The Albion goal ten minutes before the break was scored by midfielder Martin Jol and into the second half, the visitors battled hard to defend their lead.  Micky Hazard, Roberts and Steve Archibald went close and Tony Galvin’s drive came out off the bar.  Spurs kept pressing until the end, and just before the final whistle, Garth Crooks was just too high with a shot and the Hazard’s powerful effort was stopped by goalkeeper Mark Grew.

29.11.1980 Division 1     Home     Lost     2-3

Spurs found themselves 0-3 down at the break at home to West Bromwich Albion, despite a spirited fight-back, they could not prevent a 2-3 loss.

Alistair Brown’s opener in the 14th minute set Tottenham back and further goals from Bryan Robson in the 40th minute and Peter Barnes two minutes before half-time shocked Spurs with a fine first half display.  However, John Lacy pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute, with Steve Perryman adding another in the 87th, but it wasn’t enough to prevent WBA becoming the first team to win at the Lane in this season.

09.02.1980 Division 1     Away     Lost     1-2

Tottenham went down 1-2 at the Hawthorns as they put in a decent performance but one without a lot of luck.

An early goal from Cyrille Regis put the home team into a lead that they held until the interval, although Gerry Armstrong hit the post from just outside the six yard box.  From being second best in the first period, Spurs were the dominant side in the second, which brought a deserved equaliser in the 55th minute when Glenn Hoddle received Ossie Ardiles’ pass and struck a powerful effort past the keeper from over 20 yards out.

It was Regis who restored Albion’s lead with 65 minutes gone. Despite laying siege to the home goal, Spurs could not force an equaliser, although Armstrong put a header just wide, Ardiles was also close with an effort and Godden made a very good stop to deny Paul Miller.

Tottenham started well at the Hawthorns, but were shocked by a dubious penalty award and had to fight back to draw against West Bromwich Albion.

Bobby Hope scored from the spot in the 31st minute and Spurs had to hold out until half time, as they were shaken by the goal.

The second half saw Tottenham settle and Alan Gilzean won a flick on in the air to allow Martin Chivers to squeeze the ball between John Osborne and his right hand post to equalise.

20.11.1971 Division 1     Home    Won    3-2

Tottenham’s passing was not up to their usual standard as they struggled to beat West Bromwich Albion in the First Division at White Hart Lane.

Mike England scored his first goal of the season with a snap-shot as the ball dropped in the box just before half-time, but Bobby Gould equalised in the second half.  Shortly afterwards, Alan Gilzean got on the end of a Ralph Coates cross with a left footed shot to restore the lead at the Park Lane end.  A couple of minutes later, Gilly floated a header over the bar when keeper John Osborne was off his line.  Thankfully, the Scottish striker did get his head on Ray Evans’ cross to make it 3-1 soon after.

Just when it looked as though Tottenham were safe for both points, Tony Brown nipped in to score a second for the visitors, but Tottenham, with Barry Daines deputising for Pat Jennings in goal, held out for a much needed win.

08.09.1971 League Cup Second Round     Away     Won     1-0

Spurs won a League Cup Second Round tie 1-0 at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion.

Defender Lyndon Hughes had made his way upfield and crashed a shot that hit the underside of the bar, but bounced the wrong side of the line as far as Albion were concerned and that was a s close as they came to scoring in the match.  In the 78th minute, Martin Chivers made ground down the left wing, played the ball to Ralph Coates, whose cross was hooked against the post by Jimmy Pearce who then reacted quickly and dived in on his knees to head home the only goal of the game from close range.

17.02.1971 Division 1     Home    Drew    2-2

Tottenham drew 2-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion with an Alan Mullery penalty and a goal from Alan Gilzean earning a share of the points.

Albion had taken the lead through Tony Brown, but the lead was pegged back when Alan Mullery scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-1. The Spurs skipper could have put Tottenham ahead, when the second penalty award of the game was given to Spurs, but Mullery missed the target to leave Albion to approach the second half with some hope.

Brown doubled his and Albion’s score in the second half, but only a late Gilzean header denied the travelling Baggies a win at the Lane.

With a fine display in the first half, with Alan Mullery driving the team on from midfield, Tottenham should have sewn the game up, but at the interval, we only had Martin Chivers’ goal to our credit.

Albion equalised soon after the break with Tony Brown scoring and he went on to complete his hat-trick with another goal and a penalty, as the home side turned on the style in the second half.

Division 1     Home    Won    2-0

Spurs eased to a 2-0 home win in the First Division against WBA.

Eleven minutes into the game, Phil Beal had to be substituted by Martin Chivers after an injury and the reshuffled side managed to go into the break 1-0 up for the first time at home since September after Chivers scored the opening goal in the first half.  Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean combined well to provide Roger Morgan with the opportunity to drive the ball over the keeper for number two after the break.  More chances came and went, but Tottenham had to settle for the 2-0 score-line.

Spurs were beaten by the odd goal in three by West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns in this First Division meeting.

11 minutes in, Bill Brown did well to stop Tony Brown’s shot, but when the ball was kicked out, Bobby Hope picked it up and hit the ball back low past the keeper from 25 yards out.  Spurs pulled level when Eddie Clayton headed home Alan Gilzean’s cross in the 22nd minute, although the score-line did not stay the same for long.

Just four minutes later Albion had restored their lead when Jeff Astle scored a trademark header to finish off Doug Fraser’s ball in.  Albion held onto the lead to secure their win.

On a snow covered pitch, which was thawing, there was an entertaining game at the Hawthorns, which ended 2-0 in the home team’s favour.

A crude rugby tackle on Jeff Astle by reserve centre-half Laurie Brown, standing in for the injured Maurice Norman, handed Albion a free-kick.  It produced a corner, which Foggo took and found the head of centre-half Stan Jones.  His header was going into the top corner until Bill Brown pushed it over the bar, but the ref had already blown for a foul.  Another free-kick, this time given against Alan Mullery for a high foot, although there was no West Brom player in his vicinity led to the first goal of the afternoon.  It was played into the box and cleared by Gilzean, but it was played to Bobby Cram, some 20 yards out, who fired past Brown from the right of the D, two minutes before half-time.

A good passing move from the back saw Spurs open the second half with Jimmy Robertson putting in a dangerous low cross to the near post, but Simpson cleared for a corner before Greaves could get onto it.  When Cyril Knowles was robbed of the ball, WBA moved it forward quickly and Clark jinked his way into the area, only to be stopped by a well-timed tackle by Ron Henry.  Albion did have the ball in the net again, when a Spurs defender slipped as Howshall drove on into the box and his shot was turned in by Clark in the 72nd minute, but he had been in an offside position.  This brought snowballs thrown onto the pitch by the Baggies fans.  However, after consultation with the lineman, the referee allowed the goal and it was 2-0 to West Brom.

Potter grabbed a Spurs corner, coming a long way off his line and he threw the ball out to Clark, who ran 60 yards before being denied by a block from Ron Henry on the edge of the six yard box.

Two goals apiece from Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Smith earned Tottenham a place in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup after seeing off West Bromwich Albion.  The final score was 4-2 as Derek Kevan and Smith notched goals for Albion at the Hawthorns.

Bobby Smith gave Tottenham an early lead and the striker doubled the lead just before half time, when he ran onto a long ball from Ron Henry and hit his shot past Jock Wallace in the Albion goal.

In the 48th minute, Albion pulled a goal back through Keith Smith, but then Jimmy Greaves restores the two goal margin after Smith set him up.  Derek Kevan headed in to make it 3-2 until a minute from the end of the game, when Greaves weaved through the home defence to curl in a shot to see Tottenham through.

09.03.1957 Division 1     Away     Drew     1-1

Two contrasting styles made for an interesting match, which ended all square at the Hawthorns.

While West Bromwich Albion swept the ball across the pitch, using longer passes led to them having more attempts on goal, Tottenham’s short passing game gave chances for Alfie Stokes, who put his shot into the side-netting and Bobby Smith, who was unable to get his shot away as the ball stuck in the penalty area mud.   The goal came for Tottenham when Harmer’s pass set Stokes away and he took the ball around a defender and then drew the goalkeeper to him, before slipping the ball into the net from a narrow angle.  Albion had a shoot on sight policy, giving Ron Reynolds plenty of saves to make.

The start of the second half was shared between both sides, then Tottenham started to dominate when they should have gone ahead with Stokes spurning an easy chance and then Harmer shot Medwin’s cross wide.  The home side put in an extra effort in the last 20 minutes as they sought an equaliser, which finally came with five minutes of the game left.  Ronnie Allen’s pass set up Whitehouse to score from close range, despite strong offside appeals from Spurs.

08.12.1956 Division 1     Home    Drew    2-2

Two Derek Kevan goals pulled a point out of the bag for West Bromwich on their visit to White Hart Lane for an early kick off.

Having dominated the opening stages of the game, Tommy Harmer was the scorer of the first Spurs goal when he was played in by Terry Dyson just outside the penalty area, stepping back to make space for his shot, that he dispatched into the bottom corner of the net with 18 minutes gone.  With four minutes to half-time, Bobby Smith smashed a shot on the turn past Sanders in the Albion goal to put Spurs two up at the break.

West Bromwich Albion started to play long balls and striker Kevan struck a shot that Bill Brown thought was going wide, but went into the net just three minutes after the break and another in the 61st minute to earn a 2-2 draw as Spurs maintained their unbeaten home record.  Tottenham had a couple of shots cleared off the line and despite being without centre-half for 12 minutes when he was off injured, had a goal disallowed.

With criticism about the ability of the side to play push and run on heavy pitches, table-topping Spurs put those theories to rest with a scintillating performance against the Baggies.

Winning 5-0, Len Duquemin lead the way with a hat-trick.  His first was set up in the first half by a Bill Nicholson pass, with his second and third added within ten minutes after the break.  Les Bennett, shooting past Jimmy Sanders as Jack Vernon slid in to tackle and Eddie Baily score the other two goals in what the News of the World described as, “a match won by the supreme artists against the honest workmen” leaving Spurs five points clear at the top of the table.

In a Second Division match between Spurs and West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane, the first meeting of the two sides was not a classic, but Tottenham’s more clinical finishing won the day.

Even with Arthur Willis ruled out with his injury from the week previous, Spurs turned the tables on West Bromwich Albion when they turned up at White Hart Lane.

A 4-2 win was achieved thanks to goals from Colin Lyman’s two early goals, putting them on their way.  However, Ray Barlow pulled a goal back before half-time.  Tottenham’s former striker Jack Acquroff, allowed to guest by Norwich City, scored twice to extend the Spurs lead, which was enough for the win despite Ralph Ward putting through his own goal.

With football in a transitional season following resumption after the Second World War, things were still not as they should be and the fact that one of the Spurs party missed the train from Paddington was symptomatic of the problems being experienced as the club travelled to the Hawthorns to meet West Bromwich Albion.

Things did not get better once the game started, with Bert Page sustaining an injury that consigned him to hobble about on the wing for the rest of the match and then Arthur Willis was also injured, which helped WBA to a 5-0 home win.
