The match marked the opening of the New West stand and Sir Stanley Rous, President of FIFA, cut the ribbon to a firework reception. The fireworks were a taste of things to come as Glenn Hoddle’s penalty in the ninth minute gave Spurs an early lead at the Paxton Road end. Ricky Villa hit the second Spurs goal in the 31st minute after Tony Galvin had crossed, firing in a swerving volley from outside the box that Paul Bradshaw got a hand to, but couldn’t stop. Kenny Hibbitt had pulled a goal back just before the half-time whistle, shooting past Ray Clemence after receiving the ball from a short free-kick for Wolves. Villa then headed home Galvin’s pinpoint cross on 50 minutes, before rounding off his hat-trick five minutes after the interval. A bullet header from Garth Crooks to Steve Perryman’s cross from the right and a sixth goal from a Mark Falco header from another Perryman cross in the 71st minute sealed a fitting way to mark the inauguration of the new part of White Hart Lane stadium. Teams : NOTE : – After the game, Wolves manager Ian Greaves said Tottenham were a “tremendous side” and that Spurs were “superb”, “brilliant” and “too good for us”. |

12.09.1981 | Division 1 Away Won 1-0
A single goal decided the match and was created by Ossie Ardiles, who threaded a ball through the Wolves defence for Tony Galvin to beat the advancing Paul Bradshaw after 65 minutes. Glenn Hoddle had a shot cleared off the line by John Humphrey, while Bradshaw did well to fist the ball away from Chris Jones as the striker looked to reach a cross. Spurs were grateful to Ray Clemence as he blocked Norman Bell’s effort when the Wolves man was clean through on goal late on. Teams : |

Spurs were robbed when, with seconds left of the regulation 90 minutes, Kenny Hibbitt went down in the box under challenge from Glenn Hoddle. There looked nothing amiss at the time, but controversial referee Clive Thomas pointed to the spot and the resulting penalty kick was stuck away by Willie Carr to give Wolves a replay. This had equalled the scores after Hoddle had converted a free kick awarded inches outside the box, when a penalty had looked the correct decision. Archibald had struck to give Spurs and early lead, but they were pulled back by Hibbitt’s goal. The crowd was dangerously packed in that day and many Spurs fans complained of crushing at the Leppings Lane end of the ground and had to be moved to the opposite end of the stadium. Teams : |

Spurs took the first half against Wolverhampton Wanderers and it was enough to take the points home from Molineux. Both clubs sat in the bottom half of the First Division table when they met at White Hart Lane in a match that Tottenham edged 2-1. Jimmy Neighbour had scored in the first half to see Spurs turn around ahead and Willie Young added a second in the second half, but Wolves pulled one back with a substitute Steve Daley goal, although they were unable to force an equaliser. A late winner took the points on Tottenham’s First Division visit to Molineux. Spurs took the lead in the 27th minute when Martin Chivers intercepted the ball and when John McAlle went it to tackle him, the ball ran to Martin Peters, who hit the ball past Phil Parkes. Just after the break, a Frank Munro header flicked off Ray Evans and beat Pat Jennings to equalise, before Derek Parkin struck a free-kick into the net to make it 2-1 to Wolves. A deflected John Pratt shot fell to Jimmy Neighbour, who set up Chivers to equalise and then substitute Terry Naylor made a winning goal for Chivers in the last minute of the game. Teams : |

Chris McGrath’s equaliser salvaged a point from Tottenham’s visit to Molineux. Spurs had the better chances in the first half against struggling Wolves, but failed to profit from them. McGrath struck the post, Martin Chivers’ over-head kick flew just inches wise and Ralph Coates’ fierce shot was well saved. It was in the 61st minute that the home team took their chance and Barry Powell converted to give Wolves the lead. Tottenham were well worth their equaliser, which arrived when Ray Evans and Chivers combined to present McGrath the opportunity to shoot home from seven yards with his right foot. Teams : |
24.11.1973 | Division 1 Home Lost 1-3
Spurs lost this First Division match at White Hart Lane 1-3 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tottenham were handed the lead when Geoff Palmer inexplicably handled the ball, Martin Chivers scoring from the spot in the 14th minute. For the first quarter of this match, Tottenham were on top, with Peters drawing a fine save from keeper Phil Parkes with a powerful header and when a bad back pass was played towards the keeper, Alan Gilzean got to it, but could not make anything of it. Spurs were made to pay for the inability to drive home their advantage, with midfielder Barry Powell shaking off Martin Chivers and then thumping the ball past Jennings from the 18 yard line with 24 minutes gone. Wolves went into the dressing room at half-time ahead, as a minute before the break John Richards chased won a lost cause and pulled the ball back into the path of Palmer, who scored the first senior goal of his career with a 25 yard drive that flew in off the post. The scoring was completed in the 47th minute with Richards gaining another assist, by nudging the ball sideways for Kenny Hibbitt to find the bottom corner with a powerful shot. John Pratt had been the butt of the fans ire and when he was substituted after the third Wolves goal, he gesticulated at the crowd. Bill Nicholson was less than happy with the way the team played, branding it, “A bloody bad performance” after the match. Teams : Goal times |

Spurs racked up a 4-1 home win over Wolves that could have been by an even bigger margin. Having already missed a chance, Alan Gilzean made amends, converting Alan Mullery’s dangerous cross, but Wolves defended well to keep Spurs out for the rest of the half. After the interval, Martin Chivers drove home left-footed from the edge of the box to make it 2-0 and followed that up with his second, after the visitors produced a spell of pressure that saw Jennings save well form Jim McCalliog, although he was unable to stop Mike Bailey’s long range effort that made it 2-1. Jimmy Neighbour’s shot that went in off the post ended the scoring, but the winger went close again with a fierce drive going narrowly wide of the goal. Teams : |

14.08.1971 | Division 1 Away Drew 2-2
A 2-2 opening day draw was a good result for both sides, but Spurs had come from 0-2 down to grab a point. Striker Bobby Gould put the home side ahead on 27 minutes and when Mike England handled Kenny Hibbitt’s shot, Jim McCalliog hit the second from the penalty spot after 70 minutes. With ten minutes left, Cyril Knowles’ cross was dropped by keeper Phil Parkes at Martin Chivers’ feet and he reduced the deficit. When Alan Gilzean headed home Martin Peters’ free-kick, Spurs were level with only six minutes remaining. Teams : |

The two teams played out a First Division stalemate in this game at the Lane. 25.01.1969 | FA Cup Fourth Round Home Won 2-1.
Spurs won this Fourth Round FA Cup tie at White Hart Lane 2-1 thanks to goals from Neil Johnson and Jimmy Greaves, with Dave Wagstaffe scoring for Wolves. It was Wolves who took the lead in the first half, which they had the better of. Wagstaffe picked up the ball just inside the Spurs half towards the West Stand and cut inside to rifle a low shot inside Pat Jennings’ right hand post. Knowles had to clear a header by Mike England off the line from a Wolves corner, but Alan Gilzean struck the post from inside the penalty area on the left before the break. However, it was Spurs who went through with two second half goals at the Paxton Road end. A move involving Cyril Knowles, Terry Venables and Jimmy Greaves provided a ball into the box that was knocked back by Gilzean and Neil Johnson hit a half volley off the sandy pitch that beat the Wolves keeper and nestled in his bottom right corner. The winner was scored by Jimmy Greaves, who turned and hooked a shot into the net from inside the six yard box as he fell after Mike England had headed down a corner. Teams : |

A quick fire double by Wolves took the points at Molineux, thanks to a Derek Dougan goal on 61 minutes and Frank Wignall adding the second soon after. Keith Weller must have wondered what first team football was all about when he made his debut in this home match that saw Spurs win 7-4. It was Wolves who had the early advantage, when Pat Buckley gave them the lead, but the score was 1-1 by the break, with Les Allen’s goal levelling things. It was no indication of things to come, as the second half went goal-crazy ! Alan Gilzean and Eddie Clayton scored to make it 3-1 to Tottenham with Hugh McIlmoyle bringing Wolves closer with their second goal. Cliff Jones restored the two goal buffer but John Kirkham pulled it back to 4-3 and then Alan Gilzean put the ball in the net, only for Wolves to come back with a Terry Wharton goal that keep the scorers busy at 5-4. It was Cliff Jones who racked up a hat-trick with two late goals that totalled a 7-4 score-line in Tottenham’s favour. Teams : |

Spurs won 4-0 at Wolves to keep up their grip on top spot in Division One. Les Allen did very well in setting up Cliff Jones for the Tottenham opener, before the goals started flowing from Danny Blanchflower, Allen and Terry Dyson to secure a big victory. Teams : NOTE : – Wolves manager Stan Cullis said after the match that Tottenham were “The greatest side I have ever seen”. |
23.04.1960 | Division 1 Away Won 3-1
Tottenham looked poised to win the First Division Championship in 1959-1960 until they had a disastrous Easter losing the two matches over the holiday period to Manchester City and Chelsea and that allowed Wolverhampton Wanderers to have a clear run for the title. They were at home to Spurs, who were without the injured Tommy Harmer, so John White took his role and with Tony Marchi coming into the midfield, Bill Nicholson moved Dave Mackay into attack, dropping Les Allen to effect the change. The tactical alterations over-powered Wolves and swept them away, which was disappointing as the championship was there for Tottenham’s taking if they had played like this in their two previous games. As it was Bobby Smith headed Spurs into an early lead, but Wolves equalised during a short period when they were on top when Broadbent scored. Mackay scored to make it 2-1 at half-time and in the second half the woodwork denied Spurs on two occasions, but only delayed the third goal, which came from Cliff Jones’ head towards the end of the match. The defeat dented Wolves’ title hopes and Burnley went on to win the Championship while Wolves won the FA Cup. It was ironic that this win for Tottenham stopped Wolves completing the Double, which they themselves went on to claim the following season ! Teams : |

With the two teams at the top of the table with 16 points from 11 matches each, the First Division encounter looked like it would be a close one. That proved to be the case in the early part of the match, with Wolves’ Bobby Mason equalising Bobby Smith’s opener, but Smith restored the lead before the interval. Into the second period, Cliff Jones extended the lead to 3-1 and then Bobby Smith finished off a rumbustious performance with two more goals before the end to take his personal tally to four. Wolves ran out big home winners in this First Division game at Molineux. The first thirty minutes were goal-less, but Wolves went on the rampage with three goals in the next nine minutes, one a penalty. The second half was little better for Spurs, as they let in another two, one more from a spot-kick, but a further penalty gave Spurs a consolation as Tommy Harmer netted for our solitary goal in the 1-5 defeat in which Ron Reynolds played particularly well despite conceding five !! Wolves’ win at White Hart Lane gave them a club record 18 matches unbeaten in the First Division. Les Bennett’s header from Baily’s cross had given Tottenham the lead in the 23rd minute and it wasn’t until the 53rd minute that Wolves equalised. Winger Johnny Hancocks was flying and his ball in was headed home low by Dennis Wilshaw. In the next attack, Wolves took the lead when Jimmy Mullen’s cross was met by Peter Broadbent’s head and it flew into the top corner. Len Duquemin pulled Spurs back level with an equaliser just before the hour, but Wolves’ winner came from Hancocks, who drove home from a narrow angle with just ten minutes left on the clock. Fog in London saw transport trouble for our players, who were due to catch the 09.10 from Paddington, which they arrived in time for, but it was delayed and did not leave until 10.15. This resulted in the team only arriving in Wolverhampton at 13.50, some 90 minutes after they intended. They required a police escort to take the players, who had changed into their kit on the train, to the ground with one hour to kick off. When the game started, the pitch was frozen hard despite sawdust being applied to help players get a grip on the surface, but this proved no help. The fog that was the problem in London held off, but all other games in Birmingham had been called off so a large crowd had made their way to Molineux. Both sides made the best of the conditions and Wolves made the better chances in the first half, with Ted Ditchburn able to comfortably deal with them. Spurs made good ground down the right without creating any serious danger, while a claim for a penalty when Harmer was fouled in the box was not awarded. An injury to Burgess early in the second half meant he had to play the rest of the game on the left wing, with a shuffling of players to cover positions, but the game failed to produce a goal despite it being an eventful game in the frosty weather. Coming back to London after the game, the poor weather delayed the train and necessitated it to terminate at Greenford, with the teams witching to the Central Line and then the Piccadilly Line, before walking home from the nearest station. It meant that the majority of the travelling party did not get home until 00.30 and some at 02.00 ! The club’s kit skips had to be left at Greenford ! Teams : |

Wolves took the lead in this First Division match through Jessie Pye and this was added to by Jimmy Mullen to put the visitors 0-2 up. Spurs were up against the prospect of a home defeat, but driven on by captain Bill Nicholson, they staged a remarkable recovery. It was 2-2 at the break thanks to goals from Les Bennett, who headed home a cross from Len Duquemin and then Sonny Walters shot home through a packed goalmouth. The score-line ended up 4-2 to Tottenham as a foul in the penalty area on Duquemin in the second half allowed Alf Ramsey to put Spurs ahead from the penalty spot and the Channel Islander got on the score-sheet with a fantastic header late on. 16.09.1950 | There was a clash of styles with the long passing of Wolves meeting Tottenham’s Push and Run side at Molineux.
With Wolves having the bulk of the first half chances, Ted Ditchburn was called into action more often than his counterpart and rival for the England goalkeeping spot, Bert Williams. It took three minutes for the home team to go ahead when Roy Swinbourne scored with a header when he met Johnny Hancock’s right wing free-kick. The closest Spurs came to getting on the score-sheet in the first period was when Eddie Baily saw his shot come back off the post. Ten minutes after the break, Hancocks hit the second, after being set up by Jimmy Mullen and a deflection off defender Ray Chatham got Spurs a goal back five minutes later, although they could not find a way through again to leave Wolves 2-1 winners. This Thursday afternoon saw a momentous event in Tottenham’s history as they staged their first Football League match. FA Cup holders Wolves came to London to face League newcomers Spurs and were met by a team set on making their debut in League competition a winning one. With Bob Hewitson, Doug McFarlane and Bobby Steel all making their club debut, it was a good day for a whole number of reasons. Even Vivian Woodward appeared before the end of the cricket season … a most unusual occurrence. The only thing that didn’t read the script was the weather, with wind and rain sweeping across White Hart Lane. A goal from Woodward, after after six minutes gave Tottenham the lead when Walton’s 20 yard free-kick was only parried into the path of the forward, who knocked it home from close range. Another Lunn error shortly after left Woodward with a golden opportunity for the second, but he shot wide. The second goal came after the half-time break, when Woodward notched his second goal, set up by “Ginger” Walton and then Spurs were on their way to a 3-0 win, with the final goal coming from Tom Morris – a bullet of a shot from 30 yards out that tore in under the crossbar. Only good keeping by Tommy Lunn prevented Woodward from scoring a hat-trick in Tottenham’s league debut. Teams : |
