\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td>\nA commanding display by Tottenham swept aside an inept Aston Villa side thrown into disarray by Unai “Dick” Emery’s changes to protect some of his players before their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, but that back-fired on him as Spurs recorded a 2-1 win at Villa Park.\u00a0 In fact, the effect of the seven changes made to the home team made them look like they had never played together (and some of them look like they had never played football) and the crowd reaction was not what was envisioned when Emery chose this team that he thought would be good enough to beat lowly Tottenham.\u00a0 Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t lowly Tottenham who turned up, but a beast of a team who snarled and put his side under so much pressure that they buckled almost from the kick-off.\u00a0 Where has this Spurs side been all season ?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With even more injuries, De Zerbi’s choices were much more straight forward with Xavi and Dom the latest to occupy the beds in the revolving door medical room, he had to tweak the front line with Tel, Kolo Muani and Gallagher picked to play behind Richarlison, shored up by Bentancur and Palhinha in the defensive midfield positions.\u00a0 Having had a week to work on the set-up, the efforts on the training pitch paid off in spades this time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

90 seconds in, Martinez played a short pass out of the box and Spurs won the ball, played it to Richarlison centrally just inside the 18 yard line, but his shot was blocked for a corner.\u00a0 That was headed behind for another one, but the ball then dropped for the keeper after it came down off a bunch of players at the far post.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The jeers rang out from the Tottenham fans as Cash firstly got injured and then threw the ball straight off the pitch.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0While they say football fans are fickle, they also have long memories and longer memories than football commentators, because having watched the game back, the TNT man couldn’t work out why Spurs fans hated the “Polish” international<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Having closed down Mings, Richarlison forced him to play the ball out in front of the main stand ten yards from their dead ball line.\u00a0 \u00a0A long throw from Kevin Danso was headed out of the box and Conor Gallagher took a touch away from Abraham as it came to him and struck a low right foot shot that went just inside Martinez’s right hand post from outside the box.\u00a0 The energy the team had shown was putting the much changed Villa side under pressure and the midfielder’s first goal for the club couldn’t have come at a better time.\u00a0 Conor’s first touch sent Abraham the other way, as he thought the Spurs man was going to head back towards the Spurs goal, but it set up his shot beautifully and his shot unerringly found the bottom corner out of Martinez’s reach.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another half-cleared ball in the 17th minute was collected by Palhinha and his low drive was just about touched onto the post by the keeper, with the ball rebounding out across goal.\u00a0 Was it going to be just our bad luck again that it didn’t spin in ?\u00a0 \u00a0Spurs continued on the front foot, as Villa struggled to match their energy and when <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kolo Muani turned Tielemens, the Villa midfielder was so disorientated that he crashed into his own player and ended up face-planting the turf.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nTel’s deep cross missed out everyone in the middle and Richi went for it at the far post, missed it only for Randal to come in and volley at goal from a narrow angle that Martinez was forced to push over the top.\u00a0 Danso hit a shot after the corner dropped to him and that was blocked, but regaining possession, the ball was worked wide by Palhinha to Tel.\u00a0 His cross into the goalmouth saw Richarlison dart between Cash and Lindelof to power a header into the roof of the net, leaving the keeper with no chance of saving it.\u00a0 25 minutes into the match and we were 2-0 ahead.\u00a0 It is what Richi does best and it is only a shame that the service hasn’t been there for him to do it more regularly.\u00a0 On this occasion, Tel’s delivery was excellent.\u00a0 Too far out for the keeper to come for it and beyond the two defenders into an area for Richarlison to attack.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pressing high in the Villa half, Spurs were winning the ball time and time again.\u00a0 The light blue seats were gleaming in the late afternoon sunshine as the Villa fans trudged out to get a drink to try to forget what was happening out on the pitch.\u00a0 Those that stayed in their seats were quick to boo every mistake the home players made or the lack of willingness to play the ball forward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Palhinha almost picked out a long through pass to meet Tel’s run into the box, but it was a little over-hit.\u00a0 Mathys shuffled the ball past Cash, making the defender look amateur but after he drove into the box, he shot wildly over the bar from a tight angle when Gallagher was free inside him, which came just after Kolo Muani had blazed over from a long way out.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Just before half-time, Kolo Muani got away down the right and did well to hold off a couple of defenders to cross deep beyond the far post.\u00a0 Destiny did well to head it back to Tel, but he struck another wayward shot off target.\u00a0 While both Mathys and Randal put in a lot of effort, their decision making at times was poor, hitting shots that were highly unlikely to find the net.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tottenham had been first to almost every ball and surely Aston Villa couldn’t be as bad in the second half, so it was going to need a big 45 minutes from the Spurs players.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

There were a few yellow cards flying about as Tel got one for kicking the ball away, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Rogers for dissent when he didn’t get a corner and Danso for a foul on Watkins, which was a little worrying, as it hadn’t been clear who had been booked when Tel was shown a yellow card, because Kevin had a foul given against him with the ref waving a card in nobody in particular.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Villa sections started emptying with 10 minutes to go, which is pretty shameful for a team in fifth place in the league and in a Europa League semi-final.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Villa’s subs had given them a little bit of impetus although without any end result, so Spurs pressed forward and won a corner to Rogers’ disgust and when Porro played it into the middle of the box Danso had a free header that Martinez caught under the crossbar.\u00a0 Kevin was around the penalty spot, so it would have had to have been some header to score from there.\u00a0 When <\/span>Villa won a corner in the last minute, Richi got a touch on it with his head at the near post and it hit Mings on the shoulder and went over the bar, when it might have gone anywhere.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On 90 minutes, Richarlison limped off with Tel joining him in being substituted, as Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall came on to add some fresh legs to see the game out.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>With six and a half minutes of five added minutes played, Cash hoisted a cross from the right to the near post and Buendia (who always seems to score against us whoever he plays for) beat Micky to the ball and glanced his header over Kinsky to find the net at the far post with the home side’s first effort on target.\u00a0 It seemed only to be a late consolation, although there was no indication of how much more time would be added on.\u00a0 As it was not much thankfully, as Villa getting anything out of the match would have been daylight robbery.<\/span><\/p>\n

From cheers moments earlier to jeers from the few Villa fans left in the ground when the final whistle went.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>For Spurs section, there was no disappointment at letting the goal in at the death, although a clean sheet would have been well-deserved, instead an Ajax-like celebration as this level of performance was equally as surprising compared to what had gone before in this season.\u00a0 It is just a shame that those emotions as for us moving out of the relegation zone.

I wondered whether this result was the return of a favour, where we put out a\u00a0 less than full strength side last season at Villa Park for the re-arranged fixture that gave us more time to prepare for the Europa League final, allowing Villa to three points that got them into the same competition this season.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the season, there were moans from certain groups in the Spurs fanbase that Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha should never play together ever again.\u00a0 Today they were magnificent.\u00a0 Tigerish in the tackle and clever in using the ball, as well as always available to receive the ball.\u00a0 Bentancur has a touch of Moussa Dembele about him, as he is so difficult to dispossess, coming out of duels with the ball when played in tight spaces with no conceivable explanation of how he did it.\u00a0 Gallagher created the Holy Trinity in our midfield today, putting in a mighty effort and taking his goal really well to show for the first time why he was brought in.\u00a0 No more tiredness after 60 minutes, no more exerting himself chasing around with a lack of purpose and a driving force that pushed the team forward.\u00a0 Playing through midfield has been a real problem, but today it all fell into place.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mathys Tel and Randal Kolo Muani stretched Villa to the side-lines providing space for other team-mates to exploit inside and with Porro and Udogie taking advanced positions into the Villa half, it nullified any threat that their wide men might have posed.\u00a0 Not that there was a hope of that, with Sancho, and Rogers unable to keep passes on the pitch and Abraham was ineffectual against our defenders.\u00a0 Tielemens spent the match griping that he was being muscled out of it and the referee did fairly well, but with Spurs showing controlled aggression for most of the match, it was little bit annoying that we played like other PL teams do, but because it is us, we ended up with five yellow cards.\u00a0 How Bogarde didn’t get one for a late clatter on Bentancur’s instep remains a mystery that will never be solved.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The message on the big screen thanking Villa fans for their support were aimed at empty seats as the home supporters headed back into the dark depths of Birmingham, as Spurs had out-done the home team, who have been a bit of a bogey side for us.\u00a0 We had a good record at Villa Park for a few years, but that had gone over the last couple of seasons, but today, when we needed it most, the team put the screws on Villa to prevent them playing, but also played some good stuff themselves.\u00a0 The two goals were good ones and Villa didn’t come anywhere near troubling Toni Kinsky, who was beaten at the end but didn’t have to make a save.\u00a0 Obviously all the changes disrupted the team, but the players involved have beaten Tottenham before, so it must have been the semi-final second leg on Thursday that was on their minds.\u00a0 That and the pressure they were constantly put under by the Tottenham players.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The big difference was clear to see and it is hard to know why the tactics employed weren’t put in place by Frank or Tudor.\u00a0 Glenn Hoddle made the point in his after-match analysis and it is something I had noticed (as I’m sure a lot of you had too) in that the reason we end up going back on ourselves when in promising positions is that there is little movement off the ball and therefore, the option is to turn back towards our own goal.\u00a0 That has changed and we look more like a Spurs side now, but there is still three matches to go and we will need performances like this one repeated across those games if we are to stay up.
