21.02.1979 FA Cup Fourth Round replay      Away    Won     3-2 (after extra time)

It was originally scheduled that this replay would take place two days after the original tie, but the snowy weather was responsible for it being staged at the Racecourse Ground a week later, with Tottenham squeezing through in extra-time.

With Chris Jones’ wife Wendy, being admitted to hospital, he went with her, but was able to join up with the side just before the replay.  It was his eighth minute goal that gave Tottenham the lead, although Wrexham fought back to score a goal that levelled the score thanks to Gareth Davis.

So, the match went into extra time and during the first period, Dixie McNeil lobbed Mark Kendall to put the home team ahead.  Spurs were grateful for Jones’ presence as he scored an equaliser and then, with time running out, took the ball from Ricky Villa’s pass and fired Spurs into the next round with a 3-2 victory.

12.02.1979 FA Cup Fourth Round      Home    Drew     3-3

The winter weather put this game off as a winner from Wrexham’s Third Round tie against Stockport County had not been able to be resolved until after the original date of the Fourth Round.

It was hard underfoot, but the teams produced a typical FA Cup tie with end to end football.  Wrexham went into the lead with an early goal from Bobby Shinton, but Peter Taylor’s fierce cross was helped into his own goal by former Arsenal centre-half John Roberts to level at 1-1 and then Glenn Hoddle beat the Wrexham keeper to turn the tables.  However, the Dragons were not there to be slayed and John Lyons shot in off the far post to give the visitors hope going into the dressing rooms all square.

Spurs were stunned in the second half when Jimmy Holmes fouled Steve Fox and Lyons fired home the spot-kick to make it 3-2.  There was relief among the home crowd as Chris Jones replaced Gerry Armstrong and then headed an equaliser from a free-kick by Hoddle with just a couple of minutes left to earn a replay.

22.09.1976 League Cup Third Round      Home     Lost     2-3

Third Division Wrexham gave Tottenham, who were struggling in the First Division, a shock in knocking them out of the League Cup at White Hart Lane in the pouring rain.

Spurs were out-fought by the Welsh side who were two goals to the good by the half-time break.  Mickey Thomas scored both times, following Tottenham’s inability to clear the ball away from goal.  It seemed all over when Billy Ashcroft curled the ball past Pat Jennings after the interval when set up by Bobby Shinton, but Spurs staged a late rally with Chris Jones and Glenn Hoddle finding the net to produce a grandstand finish that couldn’t stop Wrexham from holding on to go through to the Fourth Round.
